Contrast: tetapi, namun, sedangkan, sebaliknya

Indonesian contrast markers do more than translate English but or however. Tetapi coordinates contrasting members inside a sentence, namun reorients a new formal sentence, sedangkan compares parallel participants or situations, and sebaliknya presents the reverse counterpart. Choosing among them means deciding both the syntactic level and the kind of opposition.

This page focuses on text organization rather than the complete syntax of each conjunction. The internal distinction between tetapi, tapi, and namun is introduced in tetapi, tapi, and namun.

Four contrast relations

MarkerRelationTypical level and register
tetapicounterexpectation within one sentenceinternal coordination; neutral
namuncounterpoint to a previous sentence or argumentsentence connection; formal
sedangkanparallel or simultaneous comparisonclause-to-clause comparison; neutral-formal
sebaliknyareverse relation or opposite directionnew sentence or clause; neutral-formal

Ruang tunggunya kecil tetapi cukup nyaman.

The waiting room is small but quite comfortable.

Ruang tunggunya sudah direnovasi. Namun, jumlah kursi belum bertambah.

The waiting room has been renovated. However, the number of seats has not increased. (formal)

Ruang tunggu domestik berada di lantai satu, sedangkan ruang tunggu internasional berada di lantai dua.

The domestic lounge is on the first floor, whereas the international lounge is on the second.

Pada pagi hari, arus penumpang bergerak ke pusat kota. Sore hari, sebaliknya, arus terbesar bergerak menuju pinggiran.

In the morning, passenger flow moves toward the city center. In the afternoon, conversely, the largest flow moves toward the outskirts.

💡
Ask two questions: Does the marker connect parts of one sentence or a new discourse unit? Then ask: Is this counterexpectation, parallel comparison, or a true reversal?

tetapi: internal counterexpectation

Tetapi coordinates words, predicates, or clauses whose relation is contrary to an expectation (neutral).

Jaket itu tipis tetapi mampu menahan angin.

The jacket is thin but can block the wind.

Mira ingin datang, tetapi jadwal kerjanya belum pasti.

Mira wants to come, but her work schedule is not yet certain.

Tim sudah berlatih keras tetapi tetap kalah pada babak semifinal.

The team trained hard but still lost in the semifinal.

The second member limits or overturns an inference from the first: thin jackets are not expected to block wind; hard training normally favors victory.

Conversation usually shortens the form to tapi (informal).

Aku suka tempatnya, tapi musiknya terlalu keras buat ngobrol.

I like the place, but the music is too loud for conversation. (informal)

Kami bisa mampir, tapi cuma sebentar.

We can stop by, but only briefly. (informal)

Use tapi to represent real casual speech, not as the default connector in an academic paragraph.

namun: a new formal counterpoint

Namun usually begins a new sentence that counters, limits, or qualifies the preceding discourse (formal). Capitalize it sentence-initially and follow it with a comma.

Program tersebut menjangkau lebih banyak desa tahun ini. Namun, biaya operasionalnya juga meningkat tajam.

The program reached more villages this year. However, its operating costs also rose sharply. (formal)

Hasil awal terlihat menjanjikan. Namun, ukuran sampel belum cukup untuk mendukung kesimpulan umum.

The initial results look promising. However, the sample is not yet large enough to support a general conclusion. (academic)

Pemerintah kota telah menambah armada. Namun, waktu tunggu pada jam sibuk belum berkurang.

The city government has added vehicles. However, waiting times during rush hour have not decreased. (formal)

The full stop gives the first proposition independent argumentative status. Namun then tells the reader to adjust the emerging conclusion.

English however is mobile; formal Indonesian Namun, is far less so. Do not insert it between two adjectives or noun phrases merely because English permits a small however efficient team.

Tim itu kecil tetapi bekerja sangat efisien.

The team is small but works very efficiently.

Tim itu hanya beranggotakan enam orang. Namun, produktivitasnya melampaui target tahunan.

The team has only six members. However, its productivity exceeds the annual target. (formal)

sedangkan: balanced comparison

Sedangkan places two participants, categories, periods, or measurements side by side (neutral-formal). The opposition may be factual rather than surprising, so “whereas” is often a better English cue than “but.”

Dina bertugas menerima tamu, sedangkan Arif menyiapkan ruang rapat.

Dina is responsible for receiving guests, whereas Arif prepares the meeting room.

Harga beras turun dua persen, sedangkan harga telur naik lima persen.

Rice prices fell by two percent, whereas egg prices rose by five percent. (data comparison)

Wilayah pesisir mengalami hujan lebat, sedangkan daerah pegunungan tetap cerah.

The coastal region had heavy rain, while the mountain area remained clear.

Kelompok pertama belajar dengan video, sedangkan kelompok kedua menggunakan modul cetak.

The first group studied with videos, whereas the second group used printed modules. (academic)

The paired clauses should be parallel enough for the comparison to be legible. Sedangkan is not simply a more formal tetapi: it assigns contrasting properties to comparable topics.

Raka suka bekerja pagi-pagi, sedangkan adiknya lebih produktif pada malam hari.

Raka likes working early in the morning, whereas his younger sibling is more productive at night.

sebaliknya: reverse direction

Sebaliknya means “conversely,” “the reverse,” or “by contrast” (neutral-formal). It is appropriate when the second relation reverses the direction or roles established in the first.

Kenaikan harga biasanya menurunkan permintaan. Sebaliknya, penurunan harga dapat mendorong pembelian.

A price increase usually reduces demand. Conversely, a price decrease can encourage purchases.

Anak-anak sering meminta bantuan orang tuanya. Sebaliknya, orang tua juga membutuhkan dukungan anak ketika lanjut usia.

Children often ask their parents for help. Conversely, parents also need their children's support in old age.

Pada musim hujan, air mengalir dari bukit ke sawah; pada musim kemarau, petani justru memompa air ke arah sebaliknya.

In the rainy season, water flows from the hill to the fields; in the dry season, farmers pump water in the opposite direction.

Bukan pelanggan yang menghubungi toko. Sebaliknya, pihak toko lebih dahulu menelepon pelanggan.

It was not the customer who contacted the shop. On the contrary, the shop called the customer first.

Not every contrast is reversible. “The room is small but comfortable” has no inverse mapping, so sebaliknya would be inappropriate.

Position and punctuation

Sentence-initial Sebaliknya, takes a following comma. It may also be parenthetical inside a clause, with commas on both sides.

Sebaliknya, peserta yang mendaftar terlambat harus menunggu sesi berikutnya.

Conversely, participants who register late must wait for the next session.

Data wilayah timur, sebaliknya, menunjukkan penurunan yang konsisten.

The eastern-region data, by contrast, show a consistent decline. (formal)

One comparison in three registers

The same trend can be packaged for conversation, an essay, and data commentary.

Sekarang makin banyak orang naik bus, tapi pengguna mobil pribadi malah berkurang.

More people are taking the bus now, but the number of private-car users is actually falling. (conversation)

Penggunaan angkutan umum terus meningkat. Namun, penggunaan kendaraan pribadi menunjukkan kecenderungan menurun.

Use of public transport continues to rise. However, use of private vehicles shows a downward trend. (essay)

Jumlah penumpang bus meningkat delapan belas persen, sedangkan pengguna mobil pribadi menurun tujuh persen.

Bus passenger numbers increased by eighteen percent, whereas private-car use fell by seven percent. (data commentary)

Conversation favors tapi and expressive malah. The essay gives the countertrend its own sentence with Namun,. Data commentary uses sedangkan to align two measured categories directly.

Commas reveal the syntactic level

Compact predicate coordination with tetapi normally needs no comma.

Laptop itu murah tetapi mudah diperbaiki.

The laptop is inexpensive but easy to repair.

Full contrasting clauses normally take a comma before tetapi or sedangkan.

Laptop itu masih berfungsi, tetapi baterainya harus segera diganti.

The laptop still works, but its battery must be replaced soon.

Toko pertama memberi garansi dua tahun, sedangkan toko kedua hanya memberi garansi enam bulan.

The first shop offers a two-year warranty, whereas the second offers only six months.

Sentence connectors take a full stop before them and a comma after them.

Permintaan meningkat pada kuartal kedua. Namun, produksi tetap berada pada tingkat sebelumnya.

Demand increased in the second quarter. However, production remained at its previous level. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting namun inside a phrase coordination

❌ Ruang kerjanya sempit namun terang.

Nonstandard under the careful distinction taught here—namun is being used where an internal coordinator is needed.

✅ Ruang kerjanya sempit tetapi mendapat banyak cahaya alami.

The workspace is narrow but gets plenty of natural light.

2. Using sedangkan for counterexpectation without parallel topics

❌ Dia sudah minum obat, sedangkan sakit kepalanya belum hilang.

Poor relation—the point is failed expectation, not a balanced comparison of two topics.

✅ Dia sudah minum obat, tetapi sakit kepalanya belum juga hilang.

She has taken medicine, but her headache still has not gone away.

3. Using sebaliknya for any ordinary contrast

❌ Makanannya pedas. Sebaliknya, rasanya enak.

Incorrect relation—tastiness is not the reverse direction of spiciness.

✅ Makanannya pedas tetapi rasanya sangat enak.

The food is spicy but tastes very good.

4. Omitting the comma after a sentence connector

❌ Penjualan daring meningkat. Namun jumlah pengunjung toko menurun.

Incorrect punctuation—sentence-initial Namun is followed by a comma.

✅ Penjualan daring meningkat. Namun, jumlah pengunjung toko fisik menurun.

Online sales increased. However, the number of visitors to physical shops declined. (formal)

5. Carrying conversational tapi into formal data commentary

❌ Produksi naik dua belas persen, tapi konsumsi turun tiga persen.

The relation is clear, but the marker does not match careful statistical prose.

✅ Produksi meningkat dua belas persen, sedangkan konsumsi menurun tiga persen.

Production increased by twelve percent, whereas consumption decreased by three percent. (data commentary)
