Cause, Reason, and Result Chains

Indonesian causal expressions point in different logical directions. Karena/sebab introduces the source or reason; sehingga introduces an outcome; sampai presents an endpoint or extreme result; akibatnya and oleh karena itu connect a prior statement to a consequence or inference.

The grammar therefore distinguishes three operations: explaining why an event happened, reporting what it caused, and drawing a conclusion in the discourse. This page builds complete chains rather than listing every conjunction or repeating foundational sentence patterns.

Causal direction at a glance

MarkerWhat follows itDirection
karena/sebabreason or causal sourceeffect ← cause
sehinggaactual resulting outcomecause → effect
sampaiendpoint or intensive resultprocess → limit
akibatnyasalient consequence in a new clause/sentenceprior event → often adverse effect
oleh karena itureasoned conclusion or responsepremise → inference

Pertandingan ditunda karena lapangan tergenang setelah hujan semalaman.

The match was postponed because the field was flooded after overnight rain.

Hujan turun semalaman sehingga lapangan tergenang.

It rained all night, so the field flooded.

Lapangan tergenang. Oleh karena itu, pertandingan ditunda sampai besok.

The field was flooded. Therefore, the match was postponed until tomorrow.

These three examples organize one event chain as reason, consequence, and discourse conclusion. The facts overlap, but the connector tells the reader which link is being asserted.

💡
Read the arrow. After karena, look backward for the source; after sehingga, look forward for the outcome; after oleh karena itu, expect the writer's conclusion or response.

Karena and sebab introduce reasons

Karena is the broad neutral marker before a causal clause.

Kami memindahkan acara ke dalam gedung karena angin bertiup semakin kencang.

We moved the event indoors because the wind was growing stronger.

Rina pulang lebih awal karena anaknya sedang demam.

Rina went home early because her child had a fever.

Karena server utama belum pulih, layanan tetap dibatasi.

Because the main server had not recovered, service remained limited.

Sebab also introduces a reason and is common in explanation and careful prose (neutral-formal). It can sound more written or argumentative than everyday karena.

Permohonan itu ditolak sebab dokumen pendukungnya tidak lengkap.

The application was rejected because its supporting documents were incomplete. (formal)

Sebab waktunya sangat terbatas, kami hanya membahas dua usulan utama.

Because time was very limited, we discussed only two main proposals. (formal)

When the reason clause comes first, use a comma. A final integrated reason normally has no preceding comma. Verbs do not change tense after either marker; aspect and time phrases establish chronology.

Clausal and nominal causes

Karena characteristically introduces a clause, but everyday Indonesian allows conventional compact causes such as karena hujan and karena macet. A predictable situation is understood.

Penerbangan kami tertunda karena hujan.

Our flight was delayed because of the rain.

Dito terlambat karena macet di jalan lingkar.

Dito was late because of congestion on the ring road.

Do not assume any bare noun will be equally clear.

Rapat dibatalkan karena ketua panitia belum tiba.

The meeting was canceled because the committee chair had not arrived.

Bare karena ketua panitia leaves the relevant causal event unknown. If the cause is a nominal event or condition, akibat is often clearer:

Beberapa perjalanan dibatalkan akibat kerusakan jalur rel.

Several journeys were canceled because of damage to the railway line. (formal)

Warga kehilangan akses air bersih akibat pencemaran sungai.

Residents lost access to clean water because of river pollution. (formal)

The cause-preposition guide treats the noun-versus-clause boundary in more detail.

Sehingga introduces an actual result

Sehingga connects a cause or preceding situation to its realized outcome. It is common in explanations, reports, and formal narratives (neutral-formal).

Jalan utama ditutup sehingga semua kendaraan dialihkan ke jalur pesisir.

The main road was closed, causing all vehicles to be diverted to the coastal route.

Harga bahan bakar naik sehingga biaya pengiriman ikut meningkat.

Fuel prices rose, so shipping costs also increased.

Dia berbicara terlalu pelan sehingga peserta di belakang tidak mendengarnya.

He or she spoke too softly, so participants at the back could not hear.

Hujan berhenti menjelang siang sehingga pertandingan dapat dilanjutkan.

The rain stopped before noon, so the match could continue.

The clause after sehingga is not a reason. It is what became true as a consequence. English so can introduce a conclusion, a purpose, or conversational continuation; Indonesian sehingga is narrower and strongly resultative.

Final sehingga clauses normally follow without a comma in conservative edited punctuation, because they remain structurally integrated. Long formal sentences sometimes use a comma for readability, but the connector itself does not require one.

💡
Sehingga reports an outcome that actually follows in the described world. For an outcome merely intended by an actor, choose agar/supaya.

Intended versus accidental result

Compare a goal with an actual consequence:

Petugas membuka semua jendela agar udara segar dapat masuk.

The officer opened all the windows so that fresh air could enter. (intended result)

Angin mendorong jendela hingga terbuka sehingga udara dingin masuk ke ruangan.

The wind pushed the window open, causing cold air to enter the room. (actual result)

Agar presents what the officer wanted. Sehingga reports what the wind event caused, without attributing a plan to the wind.

An intentional action can also have an actual result:

Panitia menambah loket sehingga antrean bergerak lebih cepat.

The committee added service counters, with the result that the queue moved faster.

The added counters may have been intended to help, but sehingga asserts the realized effect. Purpose and result can therefore coexist in one chain.

Panitia menambah loket agar waktu tunggu berkurang sehingga antrean akhirnya bergerak lebih cepat.

The committee added counters to reduce waiting time, and as a result the queue finally moved faster.

The first subordinate clause states the goal; the second states what actually happened.

Sampai marks an endpoint or extreme result

Sampai + predicate often shows that an action continues to a limit or produces an intense result. It is common in conversation and vivid narrative (neutral; conversational).

Anak-anak bermain sampai lupa waktu.

The children played until they lost track of time.

Kami tertawa sampai menangis ketika mendengar ceritanya.

We laughed until we cried when we heard the story.

Dia bekerja sampai kelelahan menjelang tenggat.

He or she worked to the point of exhaustion as the deadline approached.

Suara ledakannya keras sampai kaca jendela bergetar.

The explosion was so loud that the windowpanes shook.

Unlike neutral sehingga, sampai foregrounds the reached boundary or degree. In the last example, it resembles an informal “so...that” result.

Do not confuse resultative sampai with locative “arrive” or temporal “until.” Its complement and the surrounding event determine the reading.

Akibatnya presents a salient consequence

Akibatnya is the noun akibat “consequence” plus attached -nya. It means “as a result” and commonly introduces a new sentence or independent clause, often with a negative effect (neutral-formal).

Sistem cadangan tidak pernah diuji. Akibatnya, pemulihan data berlangsung sangat lambat.

The backup system was never tested. As a result, data recovery was very slow.

Dua petugas tidak hadir. Akibatnya, loket pelayanan dibuka terlambat.

Two officers were absent. Consequently, the service counter opened late.

Saluran air tersumbat; akibatnya, halaman sekolah tergenang.

The drain was blocked; as a result, the schoolyard flooded.

Attach -nya: akibatnya, not akibat nya. A comma follows the sentence-opening connector.

Oleh karena itu draws an inference

Oleh karena itu means “therefore/for that reason” and is frequent in formal argument, reports, and instructions (formal). It points back to a premise and presents a conclusion, decision, or recommended response.

Permukaan jalan masih licin. Oleh karena itu, pengendara diminta mengurangi kecepatan.

The road surface is still slippery. Therefore, drivers are asked to reduce speed. (formal)

Data dari dua wilayah belum lengkap. Oleh karena itu, kesimpulan akhir belum dapat ditarik.

Data from two regions are incomplete. Therefore, a final conclusion cannot yet be drawn. (academic)

Biaya perbaikan melebihi nilai kendaraan. Oleh karena itu, pemilik memilih menjualnya.

The repair cost exceeded the vehicle's value. Therefore, the owner chose to sell it.

The conclusion can be a practical response rather than an automatic physical effect. This distinguishes textual inference from sehingga, which integrates a resulting situation into the event chain.

Longer chains and scope

Several links can be expressed without losing direction.

Karena listrik padam, pompa berhenti bekerja sehingga tangki air tidak terisi. Akibatnya, layanan di lantai atas dihentikan sementara.

Because the power failed, the pump stopped working, so the water tank did not fill. As a result, service on the upper floor was temporarily suspended.

Hujan deras membuat jarak pandang berkurang sampai pengemudi hampir tidak melihat marka jalan. Oleh karena itu, polisi menutup jalur pegunungan.

Heavy rain reduced visibility until drivers could barely see the road markings. Therefore, police closed the mountain route.

Each connector has a local domain. The initial reason explains pump failure; sehingga introduces the unfilled tank; akibatnya carries that consequence into the next operational decision.

Common Mistakes

1. Using sehingga to introduce a reason

❌ Kami membatalkan perjalanan sehingga cuaca memburuk.

Wrong logical direction for ‘because the weather worsened’ — sehingga introduces a result.

✅ Kami membatalkan perjalanan karena cuaca memburuk dengan cepat.

We canceled the trip because the weather worsened quickly.

2. Treating every bare noun after karena as clear

❌ Acara ditunda karena direktur.

Incomplete causal relation — what about the director caused the delay?

✅ Acara ditunda karena direktur masih dalam perjalanan.

The event was postponed because the director was still on the way.

3. Using sehingga for an intended outcome

❌ Saya berbicara pelan sehingga bayi tidak terbangun.

Wrong if nonawakening is only the speaker's intention rather than an asserted result.

✅ Saya berbicara pelan agar bayi tidak terbangun.

I spoke quietly so that the baby would not wake up.

4. Separating -nya in akibatnya

❌ Jaringan rusak. Akibat nya, semua transaksi tertunda.

Incorrect spelling — possessive/discourse -nya attaches to akibat.

✅ Jaringan rusak. Akibatnya, semua transaksi tertunda selama satu jam.

The network failed. As a result, all transactions were delayed for an hour.

5. Using oleh karena itu to introduce the causal source

❌ Oleh karena itu hujan deras, jalan ditutup.

Incorrect structure — oleh karena itu points back to an already stated premise.

✅ Hujan turun sangat deras. Oleh karena itu, jalan menuju desa ditutup.

It rained very heavily. Therefore, the road to the village was closed.

Key Takeaways

  • Karena/sebab introduces the causal source; sehingga introduces the resulting outcome.
  • Sampai foregrounds a limit or intense endpoint rather than a neutral logical effect.
  • Akibatnya presents a salient consequence; oleh karena itu draws a conclusion or response from prior discourse.
  • Use agar/supaya for intended results and sehingga for results asserted to have occurred.
  • Analyze compact karena + noun causes: conventional ellipsis is natural, but not every noun yields a recoverable event.
