English so covers several relations that Indonesian keeps apart. Sehingga presents an actual outcome (neutral-formal), sampai presents a reached limit or striking degree (neutral; especially conversational), and maka presents a logical consequence or advances a narrative (formal, rhetorical, or literary). The right choice therefore depends less on the English translation than on what kind of result the speaker wants to foreground.
This page focuses on result linkers. Full causal chains are treated in Cause, Reason, and Result Chains, and intended outcomes with agar and supaya belong to the purpose system.
The three scales of result
| Linker | Core question | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| sehingga | What outcome actually followed? | neutral-formal |
| sampai | What limit or remarkable degree was reached? | neutral, vivid, conversational |
| maka | What follows logically or narratively? | formal, rhetorical, literary |
Compare three descriptions of increasing scale:
Kopi itu masih sangat panas sehingga saya menunggu beberapa menit sebelum meminumnya.
The coffee was still very hot, so I waited a few minutes before drinking it. (ordinary actual result)
Kopi itu panas sekali sampai lidah saya terasa perih.
The coffee was so hot that my tongue hurt. (extreme reached result)
The transaction record was not found; therefore, the claim cannot be verified. (formal logical consequence)
The first simply reports what happened. The second builds toward an experiential limit. The third sounds like reasoning rather than a casual continuation.
sehingga: an outcome that became true
Sehingga introduces a clause that holds as the realized consequence of the preceding situation (neutral-formal). It is frequent in careful explanations, reports, news, and presentations, though it is not restricted to official language.
Angin merobohkan pohon besar sehingga jalan desa tertutup total.
The wind knocked down a large tree, so the village road was completely blocked.
Nomor antrean saya terlewat sehingga saya harus mendaftar ulang.
My queue number was skipped, so I had to register again.
The team improved the registration flow, with the result that participants can now enter more quickly.
The consequence may be welcome, unwelcome, or neutral. Sehingga itself does not mean that somebody intended it.
They installed soundproofing, with the result that conversations in the studio cannot be heard outside.
The installation was intentional, but sehingga asserts the result as achieved. If the sentence merely states the goal, use agar or supaya:
Mereka memasang peredam suara agar rapat di studio tidak mengganggu kelas sebelah.
They installed soundproofing so that meetings in the studio would not disturb the class next door. (intended purpose)
This difference is crucial because English so can express either purpose or result. Indonesian makes the speaker choose between an intended target and an asserted outcome.
Position and punctuation
A sehingga clause normally follows the situation that causes it. In a single integrated sentence, edited Indonesian normally does not insert a comma directly before sehingga.
Lampu aula padam sehingga pembicara menghentikan presentasinya sejenak.
The hall lights went out, so the speaker paused the presentation briefly.
Putting sehingga first is generally unnatural because the result would precede the situation that licenses it. For sentence-to-sentence consequences, writers more often use discourse connectors such as akibatnya or oleh karena itu.
sampai: a boundary or dramatic endpoint
Resultative sampai presents the second event as the limit reached by an action, state, or degree (neutral; common in conversation and vivid narrative). It often corresponds to βuntil,β βto the point that,β or βso ... that.β
Kami mengobrol sampai petugas kafe mulai menumpuk kursi.
We talked until the cafe staff started stacking the chairs.
Nina tertawa sampai air matanya keluar.
Nina laughed until tears came out.
Suara musik dari panggung keras sekali sampai lantai balkon ikut bergetar.
The music from the stage was so loud that the balcony floor vibrated too.
She examined every figure until she found a small discrepancy in the report.
These uses are resultative because the complement is an endpoint reached through the preceding process. This page does not cover lexical sampai βarriveβ or ordinary prepositional/temporal uses such as sampai Jumat βuntil Friday.β
sampai-sampai for an especially striking consequence
Sampai-sampai intensifies the result and signals that it is remarkable (conversational-neutral). The repeated form takes a hyphen.
Dia begitu fokus bekerja sampai-sampai tidak mendengar teleponnya berdering.
He was so focused on working that he did not hear his phone ring.
The news spread so quickly that even residents of the neighboring village came.
Use this for a noteworthy excess, not for every ordinary consequence. A routine report normally calls for sehingga.
maka: consequence as reasoning
Maka marks what follows from a condition, premise, or stated cause (formal or rhetorical). It is common in regulations, mathematical reasoning, public argument, proverbs, and carefully structured prose. It is much less natural as a universal replacement for casual English βso.β
If payment has not been received by the due date, then access to the service will be limited. (formal)
All sides of the square are equal, so its perimeter can be calculated by multiplying one side by four. (academic)
Without both parties' approval, the schedule change cannot be put into effect. (formal)
In careful prose, the third example is often made leaner by dropping maka: Tanpa persetujuan kedua pihak, perubahan jadwal tidak dapat diberlakukan. Maka is useful when the consequence needs explicit rhetorical highlighting; it is not obligatory after every initial condition.
sebab ... maka: a balanced formal correlation
The paired pattern sebab X, maka Y explicitly balances reason and consequence (formal, rhetorical, sometimes proverbial).
Sebab data pembanding belum tersedia, maka analisis ini masih bersifat sementara.
Because comparative data are not yet available, this analysis remains provisional. (formal)
Sebab setiap keputusan membawa risiko, maka kita perlu mencatat dasar pertimbangannya.
Because every decision carries risk, we need to record the basis for it. (formal)
In ordinary conversation, karena X, jadi Y is often more natural. The balanced sebab ... maka frame sounds deliberate and argumentative.
maka in narrative progression
Older storytelling and elevated narration use maka to advance the story: roughly βthen/thereuponβ (literary; traditional narrative).
Maka berangkatlah sang utusan sebelum fajar menyentuh puncak bukit.
Then the envoy departed before dawn touched the hilltops. (literary)
Mendengar titah itu, maka seluruh pengawal menundukkan kepala.
Hearing that command, all the guards then bowed their heads. (literary)
This narrative use does not belong in ordinary chat such as arranging lunch. Contemporary conversation normally uses lalu, terus, or jadi, depending on the relation intended.
Common Mistakes
1. Using sehingga for a purpose that has not been achieved
β Saya menyalakan alarm sehingga tidak terlambat besok.
Incorrect for an intended future goal β sehingga presents an actual result.
β Saya menyalakan dua alarm agar tidak terlambat menghadiri wawancara besok.
I set two alarms so that I will not be late for tomorrow's interview.
2. Using maka as casual βsoβ everywhere
β Aku lapar, maka ayo pesan bakso sekarang.
Grammatically interpretable but unnaturally formal for casual conversation.
β Aku lapar, jadi kita pesan bakso sekarang saja.
I'm hungry, so let's just order meatball soup now. (conversational)
3. Using sampai for a plain, non-extreme report
β Alamatnya berubah sampai kami memperbarui basis data pelanggan.
Poor linker choice β the update is a neutral consequence, not a reached limit.
β Alamat pelanggan itu berubah sehingga kami memperbarui catatan pengirimannya.
The customer's address changed, so we updated the delivery record.
4. Adding an English-style comma before integrated sehingga
β Pintu darurat terkunci, sehingga petugas mencari jalur lain.
Nonstandard neutral punctuation β the integrated sehingga clause normally has no preceding comma.
β Pintu darurat terkunci sehingga petugas mencari jalan keluar yang lain.
The emergency door was locked, so the officers looked for another way out.
5. Treating maka as obligatory after a condition
β Setelah setiap klausa jika, kita wajib memakai maka.
Incorrect rule β maka is optional, not obligatory, after an initial jika clause.
If you want to attend that workshop, you must register by today.
Key Takeaways

- Sampai builds toward a limit or striking degree, while sampai-sampai heightens surprise.
- Maka frames a logical consequence or advances elevated narrative; it is not casual all-purpose βso.β
- The paired sebab ... maka construction is balanced and formal.
- Integrated sehingga clauses normally have no preceding comma; an initial cause or condition before maka is closed with a comma.
