The Informal Digit 2 for Repetition

In a casual message, you may see anak2 for anak-anak or jalan2 for jalan-jalan. The digit 2 tells an informed reader to repeat material, but it is not contemporary standard morphology. It now signals shorthand, register, or historical spelling practice; edited Indonesian writes the repeated form in full with a hyphen.

This page teaches recognition and register control. Individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.

Reading the shortcut

In modern digital shorthand (informal), a writer places 2 after material intended to be repeated.

ShorthandExpanded standard formMeaning in context
anak2anak-anakchildren
buku2buku-bukua salient set of books
jalan2jalan-jalanstroll; go out for leisure
hati2hati-hatibe careful

Anak2 udah sampai belum?

Have the kids arrived yet? (informal digital shorthand)

Nanti sore kita jalan2, yuk.

Let’s go out for a stroll this afternoon. (informal digital shorthand)

Hati2 di jalan, hujannya deras.

Be careful on the road; it’s raining heavily. (informal digital shorthand)

These examples reproduce nonstandard spellings so learners can recognize them. Their normal edited forms are anak-anak, jalan-jalan, and hati-hati.

Anak-anak sudah sampai belum?

Have the children arrived yet?

Nanti sore kita jalan-jalan, yuk.

Let’s go out for a stroll this afternoon. (informal conversation, standard spelling)

Hati-hati di jalan; hujannya deras.

Be careful on the road; it’s raining heavily.

Digit 2 is something to decode, not something learners need to produce. Full hyphenated spelling is correct in every register.

A historical convention with a modern afterlife

The notation is older than texting. Earlier Indonesian and Malay orthographic practice used digit 2 as an economical sign for repetition; it was notably present in the Republican/Soewandi spelling era (archaic). The 1972 adoption of Ejaan yang Disempurnakan established full hyphenated forms such as anak-anak for modern standard writing.

Dalam dokumen lama itu tertulis anak2 dan kura2.

The old document contains the spellings anak2 and kura2. (archaic orthography)

When quoting or transcribing a historical source, an editor may preserve its original spelling and explain it. When modernizing the text for present-day readers, expand the form consistently.

Edisi diplomatik mempertahankan ejaan kura2 dari naskah sumber.

The diplomatic edition preserves the spelling kura2 from the source manuscript. (academic)

Edisi modern menuliskan bentuk itu sebagai kura-kura.

The modern edition writes that form as kura-kura. (academic)

The same graphic device therefore has two histories: once an official or widespread orthographic convention, now chiefly a casual digital shortcut. Calling every occurrence β€œtext slang” would misread archival material.

Register: chat, email, and report

A message can preserve its meaning while spelling and wording shift with the medium.

Casual chat

Anak2 udah sampai? Tolong kabarin, ya.

Have the kids arrived? Let me know, okay? (informal chat shorthand)

Standard email

Apakah anak-anak sudah sampai? Mohon beri kabar setelah mereka tiba.

Have the children arrived? Please let me know after they get there. (careful email)

Formal report

Anak-anak telah tiba di lokasi kegiatan pada pukul 08.15.

The children arrived at the activity site at 8:15 a.m. (formal report)

The chat changes sudah to colloquial udah, shortens beri kabar to kabarin, and uses digit 2. The email restores standard words and full reduplication. The report uses precise time and impersonal factual style. The digit is one register cue among several.

Buku-buku yang diminta telah diserahkan kepada panitia.

The requested books have been handed to the committee. (formal report)

Writing buku2 in that report would clash with the genre even if every reader understood it.

Why edited prose excludes digit 2

Full spelling shows the word's actual internal structure. It distinguishes true copying from changing-sound pairs and supports readers, search tools, dictionaries, text-to-speech systems, and formal archival consistency.

Laporan itu membahas gerak-gerik kendaraan di sekitar gerbang.

The report discusses vehicle movements around the gate.

Gerak-gerik cannot be represented accurately as gerak2: its second element changes sound. Likewise, kupu-kupu is a lexicalized word, not a plural instruction. Full spelling prevents the digit from falsely suggesting that every repeated-looking form follows the same productive rule.

Seekor kupu-kupu ditemukan di dalam ruang pameran.

A butterfly was found inside the exhibition room. (formal report)

In addition, a bare digit can be pronounced as dua by software or by a learner reading literally. Standard anak-anak directly presents the intended word.

πŸ’‘
Expansion is not always β€œcopy everything before 2.” Identify the established word first: jalan2 β†’ jalan-jalan, but changing-sound gerak-gerik must be learned in full.

Actual number 2 versus a repetition sign

Spacing and position distinguish an actual numeral from shorthand.

Dua anak menunggu di depan kelas.

Two children are waiting in front of the classroom.

Jumlah peserta: 2 anak

Number of participants: 2 children. (form or table entry)

Anak2 menunggu di depan kelas.

The children are waiting in front of the classroom. (informal shorthand; exact number unspecified)

2 anak gives the exact count two. Anak2 merely signals repetition and may refer to any plural-sized relevant group. The shortcut must never be interpreted as saying there are exactly two children.

In ordinary running prose, spelling out a small number as dua anak is often preferred, while tables and data-heavy contexts may favor the numeral. That editorial choice is unrelated to reduplication.

Affixes and clitics make shorthand especially risky

Writers may type forms such as buku2nya or jalan2, but the digit conceals scope. In standard buku-bukunya, -nya attaches outside the complete copied noun. In berjalan-jalan, ber- appears once around the copied base.

Buku-bukunya sudah saya masukkan ke dalam kotak.

I’ve put his/her books in the box.

Kami berjalan-jalan di sekitar museum setelah makan siang.

We strolled around the museum after lunch.

Compare these with ambiguous or nonstandard buku2nya and berjalan2 (informal). They save keystrokes but teach nothing reliable about affix bracketing.

Foto-fotonya sudah tersimpan di folder bersama.

His/her photos have been saved in the shared folder.

Full spelling is also right in casual messages

Avoiding digit 2 does not make a friendly text stiff. Register comes from the whole message, not from one shortcut.

Teman-teman, nanti malam jadi kumpul, kan?

Friends, we’re still meeting tonight, right? (informal, standard spelling)

Hati-hati pulangnya, ya!

Be careful on your way home, okay! (informal, standard spelling)

Both are casual and natural while following standard reduplication spelling. Learners never need digit 2 to sound friendly.

Orthography

In edited prose, spell both elements in full and join standard full or changing-sound reduplication with a hyphen: anak-anak, berjalan-jalan, sayur-mayur. Attach affixes and clitics according to bracketing: buku-bukunya, kemerah-merahan. Never substitute 2 or superscript Β² for the repeated material outside faithful historical quotation or deliberately represented informal shorthand.

Common Mistakes

1. Using digit 2 in an email

❌ Yth. Ibu Rina, dokumen2nya sudah kami terima.

Incorrect register and spelling for a formal email.

βœ… Yth. Ibu Rina, dokumen-dokumennya sudah kami terima.

Dear Ms. Rina, we have received the documents. (formal)

2. Reading the shortcut as an exact count

❌ Anak2 berarti tepat dua anak.

Incorrect β€” the shortcut marks repetition, not the exact number two.

βœ… Dua anak berarti jumlahnya tepat dua.

Dua anak means that the number is exactly two.

3. Using digit 2 for changing-sound reduplication

❌ Pasar itu menjual sayur2 segar.

Incorrect for sayur-mayur β€” digit 2 cannot express the changed second element.

βœ… Pasar itu menjual sayur-mayur segar.

That market sells assorted fresh vegetables.

4. Hiding clitic scope in edited prose

❌ Buku2nya belum dikembalikan ke perpustakaan.

Incorrect edited spelling β€” expand the copied noun and attach -nya afterward.

βœ… Buku-bukunya belum dikembalikan ke perpustakaan.

His/her books have not been returned to the library.

Key Takeaways

  • Digit 2 can signal repetition in older orthography and casual digital shorthand, but it is not current standard spelling.
  • Expand anak2 to anak-anak and preserve changing-sound or lexicalized forms exactly.
  • 2 anak means exactly two children; informal anak2 merely cues a repeated form.
  • Full hyphenated spelling is correct in chat, email, reports, and all edited prose.
