Lexicalized Reduplicated Words

Some Indonesian dictionary words exist in a repeated shape: kupu-kupu “butterfly,” kura-kura “turtle,” ubur-ubur “jellyfish,” and masing-masing “each/respectively.” Their meanings are lexicalized. Removing one half does not create a singular, because the repetition is part of the word itself.

This page focuses on recognizing and using these fixed forms. Productive affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.

Repeated shape does not guarantee a plural meaning

The clearest test is a singular context. A classifier or numeral can show that the entire repeated form denotes one entity.

Seekor kupu-kupu masuk melalui jendela dapur.

A butterfly came in through the kitchen window.

Kura-kura peliharaan Dimas sedang berjemur di dekat kolam.

Dimas’s pet turtle is basking near the pond.

Seorang anak menemukan seekor ubur-ubur di tepi pantai.

A child found a jellyfish at the water’s edge.

Seekor kupu-kupu is one butterfly, not two. The same applies to seekor kura-kura and seekor ubur-ubur. Number comes from the classifier, numeral, quantifier, or context.

Dua kupu-kupu hinggap pada bunga yang sama.

Two butterflies landed on the same flower.

Beberapa kura-kura berenang mendekati batu besar.

Several turtles swam toward the large rock.

The lexical form stays unchanged in singular and plural contexts. Indonesian does not shorten kupu-kupu to kupu for one and restore the copy for more than one.

💡
For a lexicalized repeated noun, put number outside the word: seekor kupu-kupu, dua kupu-kupu, banyak kupu-kupu.

The impossible-simplex test

Ask whether one half can independently carry the same modern meaning. For the core animal terms on this page, it cannot.

Whole wordMeaningOne half with that meaning?
kupu-kupubutterflyno ordinary simplex kupu meaning one butterfly
kura-kuraturtle/tortoiseno ordinary simplex kura with that meaning
ubur-uburjellyfishno ordinary simplex ubur with that meaning
laba-labaspiderno ordinary simplex laba meaning spider

Ada laba-laba kecil di sudut kamar mandi.

There is a small spider in the corner of the bathroom.

Ubur-ubur itu tampak bening di dalam air.

That jellyfish looks translucent in the water.

This is a vocabulary fact, not a productive grammatical rule. The sound laba exists in the unrelated word laba “profit,” but that does not make laba-laba mean “profits” or let laba mean a single spider. Homophony does not undo lexicalization.

Masing-masing: a fixed distributive

Masing-masing assigns something separately to every relevant member. It can occur before a noun phrase or stand after a plural participant whose members are being distributed over.

Masing-masing peserta menerima satu kartu akses.

Each participant receives one access card.

Silakan kembali ke tempat duduk masing-masing.

Please return to your respective seats.

Rina dan Budi membawa bekal masing-masing.

Rina and Budi each brought their own packed meal.

Kami membayar pesanan masing-masing sebelum pulang.

We each paid for our own order before leaving.

The repeated shape does not mark the plural of a hypothetical noun masing. Masing-masing is the distributive expression as a whole. English distributes with each, respective, or each ... own; word order changes with the construction.

It can combine with an explicit group, but avoid needlessly repeating the distributor.

Masing-masing anggota tim menjelaskan bagiannya.

Each team member explained their section.

Other everyday lexicalized forms

Many frequent repeated words have conventional meanings that range far beyond number.

WordConventional meaningWord class/use
oleh-olehgift/souvenir brought from a tripnoun
tiba-tibasuddenlyadverb
pura-purapretend; feignverb/adverbial
sia-siafutile; in vainadjective/adverbial
kira-kiraapproximately; roughlyadverb

Jangan lupa membeli oleh-oleh untuk Nenek.

Don’t forget to buy a souvenir for Grandma.

Tiba-tiba listrik padam saat kami sedang makan.

Suddenly the power went out while we were eating.

Anak itu pura-pura tidur ketika ibunya masuk.

The child pretended to be asleep when his mother came in.

Semua usaha kami akan sia-sia kalau datanya tidak disimpan.

All our work will be in vain if the data isn’t saved.

Perjalanan ke stasiun memakan waktu kira-kira dua puluh menit.

The trip to the station takes approximately twenty minutes.

Some halves exist independently with another meaning. Oleh is also a preposition marking a passive agent, but oleh-oleh is a souvenir, not two occurrences of “by.” Kira appears in verbs such as mengira “suppose,” yet kira-kira has conventional approximate uses. The relevant test is same meaning, not merely same spelling.

Lexicalized meaning can still be internally suggestive

“Lexicalized” does not mean that every form is completely opaque. Masing-masing transparently evokes individual distribution, and kira-kira relates historically and semantically to estimation. The point is that modern speakers store a conventional whole whose grammar cannot be recovered by a universal copying rule.

Harga perbaikannya kira-kira satu juta rupiah.

The repair will cost roughly one million rupiah.

Dia membawa oleh-oleh khas Ambon untuk teman-teman sekantor.

She brought Ambon specialties as souvenirs for her coworkers.

Fixed forms in larger phrases

Modifiers, demonstratives, and clitics attach or follow according to ordinary Indonesian structure while the lexicalized core remains intact.

Kupu-kupu biru itu hanya muncul pada musim tertentu.

That blue butterfly appears only in certain seasons.

Kura-kuranya belum mau makan sejak kemarin.

His/her turtle hasn’t wanted to eat since yesterday.

Oleh-oleh dari Makassar itu sudah dibagikan kepada tetangga.

The souvenirs from Makassar have already been distributed to the neighbors.

In kura-kuranya, attached -nya follows the complete lexical word. It is not copied as kuranya-kuranya. See affixed reduplication for outer affixes and clitics.

Orthography

Write the full lexicalized form with a hyphen: kupu-kupu, kura-kura, ubur-ubur, masing-masing. Never use digit 2 in edited prose. If the word takes -nya, attach it to the whole written formation, as in kura-kuranya. Standard capitalization affects only the start of the word at sentence beginning.

💡
Do not decide compositionality from appearance alone. Check whether the whole has a dictionary meaning and whether one half can carry that same meaning independently.

Common Mistakes

1. Removing one half to make a singular animal

❌ Seekor kupu terbang masuk ke rumah.

Incorrect for ‘one butterfly’ — kupu-kupu remains whole in a singular phrase.

✅ Seekor kupu-kupu terbang masuk ke rumah.

A butterfly flew into the house.

2. Dropping half of the word after a numeral

❌ Saya memelihara dua kura di halaman.

Incorrect — a numeral supplies number but does not shorten the lexical word kura-kura.

✅ Saya memelihara dua kura-kura di halaman.

I keep two turtles in the yard.

3. Shortening masing-masing

❌ Masing peserta menerima satu sertifikat.

Incorrect in Standard Indonesian — the distributive expression is masing-masing.

✅ Masing-masing peserta menerima satu sertifikat.

Each participant receives one certificate.

4. Reading oleh-oleh compositionally

❌ Saya membeli oleh untuk keluarga di rumah.

Incorrect for ‘souvenirs’ — oleh alone is not the singular of oleh-oleh.

✅ Saya membeli oleh-oleh untuk keluarga di rumah.

I bought souvenirs for my family at home.

5. Using digit 2 in edited prose

❌ Ubur2 dapat menyengat perenang.

Incorrect edited spelling — the whole lexical item must be written ubur-ubur.

✅ Ubur-ubur dapat menyengat perenang.

Jellyfish can sting swimmers.

Key Takeaways

  • Some dictionary words exist only in repeated form; their visible repetition is not a plural marker.
  • Keep kupu-kupu, kura-kura, ubur-ubur, and masing-masing whole in singular and plural contexts.
  • A simplex half may be impossible with the intended meaning or may exist with an unrelated meaning.
  • Hyphenate the fixed form and place number, modifiers, and clitics around the whole word.
