In changing-sound reduplication, two linked elements resemble one another without being identical: sayur-mayur, lauk-pauk, gerak-gerik, and warna-warni. The sound alternation helps form a vivid conventional unit, but it is not a free rhyme game. These forms belong to a restricted expressive lexicon and must be learned as established words.
This page maps their structure and semantic families. Individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.
What changes—and what stays constant
The paired elements share enough sound material to feel related, while one or more consonants or vowels alternate. A hyphen marks the whole combination as one standard reduplicative unit.
Pedagang itu menata sayur-mayur segar sebelum pasar dibuka.
The vendor arranged assorted fresh vegetables before the market opened.
Nasi dan lauk-pauk sudah tersedia di meja makan.
Rice and assorted side dishes are already on the dining table.
Polisi memperhatikan gerak-gerik orang yang berdiri dekat pintu.
The police watched the behavior of the person standing near the door.
Lampion warna-warni menghiasi jalan menuju balai desa.
Colorful lanterns decorate the road to the village hall.
The second elements mayur, pauk, gerik, and warni are not interchangeable dictionary synonyms for the first elements. They function inside established pairings. A learner who treats mayur as an independent everyday synonym of sayur will misanalyze both the vocabulary and the grammar.
Assorted-item expressions
Several changing-sound forms gather related items into an assortment. They do more than state bare plurality: they encourage the reader to imagine range and variety within a domain.
| Expression | Domain | Typical sense | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| sayur-mayur | vegetables | assorted vegetables | neutral |
| lauk-pauk | side dishes | a range of accompaniments to rice | neutral |
| warna-warni | colors | many varied colors; colorful | neutral/expressive |
| ramah-tamah | social interaction | friendly social reception | formal/ceremonial |
Ibu membeli sayur-mayur untuk persediaan tiga hari.
Mom bought assorted vegetables for the next three days.
Setiap keluarga membawa lauk-pauk untuk makan bersama.
Each family brought side dishes for the shared meal.
Dinding kelas dipenuhi gambar warna-warni buatan siswa.
The classroom walls are covered with colorful pictures made by the students.
Acara ramah-tamah diadakan setelah pelantikan pengurus baru.
A social reception was held after the inauguration of the new committee. (formal)
Sayur-mayur does not require every possible vegetable to be present, and lauk-pauk does not provide a precise count. The construction presents a varied collection. For plain number without emphasis on assortment, a bare noun or ordinary quantifier may be enough.
Kami hanya membeli dua ikat bayam, bukan sayur-mayur untuk pesta besar.
We bought only two bunches of spinach, not an assortment of vegetables for a large party.
The contrast is pragmatic rather than mathematical: sayur-mayur typically invites a varied-set interpretation rather than merely identifying one vegetable in multiple bunches.
Movement, behavior, and observable signs
Other pairs package a field of related movements, traces, or details into one lexical unit. Gerak-gerik means someone's movements or behavior as observed; seluk-beluk means the detailed ins and outs of a subject.
Satpam itu mulai curiga melihat gerak-gerik tamu tersebut.
The security guard became suspicious after observing that guest’s behavior.
Kamera merekam gerak-gerik kendaraan di pintu masuk.
The camera recorded the movements of vehicles at the entrance.
Rina memahami seluk-beluk proses perizinan di kantor itu.
Rina understands the ins and outs of the licensing process at that office.
Sebelum berinvestasi, pelajari dulu seluk-beluk usaha tersebut.
Before investing, first learn the ins and outs of that business.
Neither expression is built productively in the sentence. Gerik does not independently mean every thing that gerak means, and beluk is not a general synonym of seluk. The pair names a conventional semantic field.
Expressive states and scenes
Changing-sound and rhyming pairs are especially effective when a speaker wants to portray a scene vividly. They can evoke disorder, noise, damage, or ragged appearance.
Gudang itu porak-poranda setelah diterjang angin kencang.
The warehouse was in complete disarray after being hit by strong winds.
Suasana pasar malam menjadi hiruk-pikuk menjelang tengah malam.
The night market became bustling and noisy toward midnight.
Bajunya compang-camping setelah tersangkut kawat berduri.
His clothes were in tatters after catching on barbed wire.
Mereka berlari pontang-panting ketika mendengar alarm berbunyi.
They ran about frantically when they heard the alarm.
These items are expressive, but not all are informal. Porak-poranda occurs naturally in formal journalism (formal), while hiruk-pikuk is also at home in descriptive prose (literary). Ramah-tamah is common in ceremonial administration (formal). Register follows the individual word and context, not the morphological type alone.
Permukiman itu porak-poranda akibat banjir bandang.
The settlement was devastated by the flash flood. (journalistic)
Di tengah hiruk-pikuk terminal, ia tetap mendengar namanya dipanggil.
Amid the bustle of the terminal, she still heard her name being called. (literary)
Alternation is restricted, not freely productive
English speakers may recognize playful patterns such as teeny-weeny or wishy-washy. Indonesian changing-sound forms are similarly memorable, but their existence must be established by usage. You cannot replace an initial consonant at will and expect a standard word.
Toko itu menjual buah dan sayur dari petani setempat.
The shop sells fruit and vegetables from local farmers.
There is no standard buah-muah meaning “assorted fruit” by analogy with sayur-mayur. Use buah-buahan or berbagai buah, depending on the meaning.
Toko itu menjual berbagai buah lokal yang sedang musim.
The shop sells various local fruits that are in season.
Likewise, do not split a conventional pair and coordinate its halves as though they named separate categories. Lauk-pauk is one lexical unit; it does not mean “lauk and a separate item called pauk.”
Phrase behavior
The whole expression occupies a normal noun, adjective, or adverbial position. Modifiers apply to the unit as a whole.
Sayur-mayur segar itu dikirim langsung dari kebun.
Those assorted fresh vegetables are delivered directly from the farm.
Kami menikmati aneka lauk-pauk khas Minangkabau.
We enjoyed a variety of Minangkabau side dishes.
Anak-anak mengenakan kostum warna-warni saat pawai.
The children wore colorful costumes during the parade.
Ia menceritakan seluk-beluk pekerjaannya kepada mahasiswa magang.
She explained the ins and outs of her work to the interns.
The adjective segar follows the complete noun sayur-mayur. The noun kostum precedes attributive warna-warni in ordinary Indonesian noun-phrase order.
Orthography
Use a closed-up hyphen: sayur-mayur, lauk-pauk, gerak-gerik, warna-warni. Do not write the elements separately or replace the second element with digit 2; sound alternation cannot be represented accurately by sayur2 anyway. If an established form takes an affix, attach it according to its morphological bracketing rather than copying the affix mechanically. See hyphens and affixed reduplication.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the second half as an independent synonym
❌ Saya membeli mayur di pasar.
Incorrect for ordinary ‘vegetables’ — mayur belongs to the established pair sayur-mayur.
✅ Saya membeli sayur di pasar.
I bought vegetables at the market.
2. Inventing a rhyme by analogy
❌ Toko itu menjual buah-muah dari berbagai daerah.
Incorrect — buah-muah is not an established Standard Indonesian form.
✅ Toko itu menjual berbagai buah dari berbagai daerah.
The shop sells various fruits from different regions.
3. Omitting the hyphen
❌ Lampu warna warni dipasang di sepanjang jalan.
Incorrect spelling — warna-warni is a hyphenated unit.
✅ Lampu warna-warni dipasang di sepanjang jalan.
Colorful lights were installed along the road.
4. Splitting one lexical unit into two coordinated nouns
❌ Kami menyiapkan lauk dan pauk untuk makan malam.
Incorrect for the established assortment expression — pauk is not a separate coordinated category here.
✅ Kami menyiapkan lauk-pauk untuk makan malam.
We prepared assorted side dishes for dinner.
5. Replacing an alternating element with digit 2
❌ Polisi mengamati gerak2 orang itu.
Incorrect edited spelling and inaccurate structure — gerak-gerik contains sound alternation.
✅ Polisi mengamati gerak-gerik orang itu.
The police observed that person’s behavior.
