Partial Reduplication

Partial reduplication preserves only part of a historical copy. In forms such as lelaki and tetangga, a syllable built from the base’s first consonant plus e appears before the base: historically le- + laki and te- + tangga. In contemporary Indonesian, however, most speakers store these results as complete words rather than creating them online.

That lexical status is the central lesson. Partial forms are written solid, their meanings may have drifted far from the base, and the pattern cannot be extended freely. Individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax remain on dedicated adjacent pages.

English has no comparable productive pattern. It also preserves historical word relationships that speakers no longer build freely, but an English learner never forms a new plural by copying a first consonant and adding a vowel. Approach Indonesian partial forms in the same vocabulary-first way: recognize the history, then memorize the established modern word.

The historical shape

The traditional description copies the first consonant of a consonant-initial base and adds a schwa-like e before the whole base.

Historical baseStored partial formModern meaning
lakilelakiman, male
tanggatetangganeighbor
luhurleluhurancestor
jakajejakabachelor, young unmarried man
tamutetamuguest(s)

The e in the copied syllable is written with the ordinary letter e. Indonesian standard orthography does not mark it with a diacritic. This formal history helps recognition, but it is not a recipe for inventing new vocabulary.

Lelaki berkacamata itu sedang berbicara dengan kepala sekolah.

The man wearing glasses is speaking with the principal.

Leluhur keluarga kami berasal dari sebuah desa di pesisir.

Our family’s ancestors came from a village on the coast.

Dalam novel lama itu, seorang jejaka meninggalkan kampung untuk mencari pekerjaan.

In that old novel, a young unmarried man leaves the village to find work. (literary)

Jejaka is now most characteristic of literary or stylized descriptions (literary). Tetamu also occurs in elevated or literary prose (literary), while everyday Indonesian normally uses tamu.

Para tetamu dipersilakan menikmati hidangan di pendopo.

The guests are invited to enjoy the meal in the pavilion. (literary)

Register is part of lexical storage: knowing how a form was built historically does not tell you where modern speakers choose it.

💡
Use the historical pattern to recognize a word, not to manufacture one. The modern learner’s task is to store each established form together with its meaning and register.

Laki, lelaki, and laki-laki

Historical laki is related to lelaki, but the modern everyday system is not a simple singular-versus-reduplicated contrast. Laki-laki is the ordinary neutral word for “man/male,” lelaki is also standard and is especially common in narrative or descriptive prose, and suami is the clearest ordinary word for “husband.”

Laki-laki yang duduk dekat jendela itu paman saya.

The man sitting near the window is my uncle.

Polisi mencari seorang lelaki berjaket hijau.

The police are looking for a man in a green jacket.

Suaminya bekerja di rumah sakit daerah.

Her husband works at the regional hospital.

Do not analyze lelaki as a plural of laki. Its solid spelling identifies one stored partial form, and its number remains dependent on context like other Indonesian nouns.

Dua lelaki membantu mendorong mobil yang mogok.

Two men helped push the broken-down car.

The cardinal dua supplies plural number; lelaki itself does not need another copy.

Tangga and tetangga: meaning can become opaque

The historical relation between tangga “ladder/stairs” and tetangga “neighbor” is not a productive semantic relationship for modern speakers. The two are separate lexical entries.

Tangga kayu itu licin setelah terkena hujan.

That wooden ladder is slippery after being rained on.

Tetangga baru kami membawa kue saat memperkenalkan diri.

Our new neighbor brought a cake when introducing himself/herself.

Para tetangga bergotong royong membersihkan selokan.

The neighbors worked together to clean the drain.

The partial syllable does not mean plural, nearby, or human. Tetangga can refer to one neighbor, while tangga can refer to several ladders if context supplies plurality.

Di gudang itu ada tiga tangga lipat dan satu tangga kayu.

There are three folding ladders and one wooden ladder in that storeroom.

Hanya satu tetangga yang menghadiri rapat tadi malam.

Only one neighbor attended last night’s meeting.

This semantic opacity is strong evidence that partial reduplication is lexical history, not a live number rule.

Pepohonan: partial copying inside an affixed word

Some established partial forms occur with suffix -an. Pepohonan is historically built from partial copying of pohon plus -an and commonly presents trees collectively—as tree growth, a stand of trees, or the wooded component of a scene.

Pepohonan di sepanjang sungai membantu mencegah erosi.

The trees along the river help prevent erosion.

Kabut tipis masih menggantung di atas pepohonan.

A light mist is still hanging over the treetops.

Dari jendela hotel, kami melihat pepohonan hijau menutupi lereng.

From the hotel window, we saw green trees covering the slope.

Compare three ways of viewing pohon:

Pohon tumbuh lebih cepat pada musim hujan.

Trees grow faster in the rainy season; bare pohon has general number.

Pohon-pohon yang tumbang itu sudah dipindahkan.

The fallen trees have been moved; the reduplicated noun foregrounds a set.

Pepohonan di taman itu sangat rindang.

The trees or tree cover in that park are very leafy; the partial form presents a collective scene.

Pepohonan is not just a more elegant spelling of every plural pohon. It has a collective and often scenic texture. Exact count therefore favors bare pohon after the numeral: tiga pohon, not ordinary tiga pepohonan.

💡
Distinguish number from lexical perspective: pohon leaves number open, pohon-pohon foregrounds multiple trees, and pepohonan often packages trees as vegetation or a collective stand.

Other affixed partial forms

Several conventional nouns show the same solid partial shape plus -an.

Dedaunan kering menutupi jalan setapak setelah angin kencang.

Dry leaves covered the footpath after the strong wind.

Rerumputan tumbuh tinggi di lahan yang sudah lama kosong.

Grass and weeds grow tall on the land that has long been vacant.

Tim penyelamat mencari korban di antara reruntuhan bangunan.

The rescue team searched for victims among the building ruins.

Kebun raya itu melindungi berbagai tetumbuhan lokal.

That botanical garden protects various local plants. (formal)

Tetumbuhan is most at home in botanical, formal, or literary description (formal). Dedaunan, rerumputan, and reruntuhan are established lexical items. Their shared shape does not make every comparable formation acceptable.

The suffix is written solid with the whole partial base: pe + pohon + an → pepohonan is an analysis, while pepohonan is the actual spelling. The displayed plus signs are teaching notation only.

Productivity limits

Modern speakers cannot take any consonant-initial noun, add a copied consonant plus e, and obtain a standard collective or plural. Ordinary full reduplication, a quantifier, or a bare noun remains necessary outside the stored inventory.

Buku-buku yang rusak diletakkan di meja belakang.

The damaged books were placed on the back table.

Banyak rumah di daerah itu menggunakan penampung air hujan.

Many houses in that area use rainwater tanks.

Kucing-kucing di sekitar pasar dirawat oleh para pedagang.

The cats around the market are cared for by the vendors.

There are no general modern plural forms bebuku, rerumah, or kekucing. Even when an invented form is pronounceable and follows the historical consonant pattern, it has no established lexical status.

Some newer or extended words, such as jejaring “network,” show that speakers can recognize and occasionally exploit familiar shapes. This does not make the process freely productive; jejaring itself is an established word that learners should store.

Universitas itu membangun jejaring penelitian dengan beberapa lembaga di Asia.

That university is building a research network with several institutions in Asia.

Affixes and orthography

Partial forms are written solid: lelaki, tetangga, leluhur, pepohonan. Do not insert the hyphen used in full reduplication. Ordinary affixes then attach to the stored word according to normal rules: bertetangga “be neighbors,” tetangganya “his/her neighbor,” and leluhurnya “his/her ancestors.”

Keluarga kami sudah bertetangga selama lebih dari dua puluh tahun.

Our families have been neighbors for more than twenty years.

Full and changing-sound reduplication remains hyphenated, as explained on the overview. Never use digit 2 as a substitute in edited prose.

Common Mistakes

1. Generating a partial plural from any noun

❌ Bebuku itu akan disumbangkan ke sekolah desa.

Incorrect invented form — partial reduplication is not a productive plural rule.

✅ Buku-buku itu akan disumbangkan ke sekolah desa.

Those books will be donated to the village school.

2. Hyphenating a stored partial form

❌ Pe-pohonan di bukit itu terbakar.

Incorrect spelling — pepohonan is a solid partial-reduplication form.

✅ Pepohonan di bukit itu terbakar.

The trees on that hill caught fire.

3. Reading tetangga as a plural of tangga

❌ Dua tetangga di gudang itu perlu diperbaiki.

Incorrect for ‘two ladders’ — tetangga means neighbor, not multiple tangga.

✅ Dua tangga di gudang itu perlu diperbaiki.

The two ladders in that storeroom need to be repaired.

4. Using a collective partial form after an exact count

❌ Kami menanam tiga pepohonan di halaman sekolah.

Incorrect ordinary count — pepohonan is collective, while a numeral takes bare pohon.

✅ Kami menanam tiga pohon di halaman sekolah.

We planted three trees in the schoolyard.

5. Replacing a full copy with digit 2

❌ Pohon2 yang tumbang menutup jalan.

Incorrect edited spelling — digit 2 is a nonstandard shortcut.

✅ Pohon-pohon yang tumbang menutup jalan.

The fallen trees are blocking the road.

Key Takeaways

  • Partial reduplication is a historical copying pattern preserved in stored words such as lelaki and tetangga.
  • Meanings may be opaque: modern tetangga “neighbor” is not a number form of tangga “ladder.”
  • Pepohonan, dedaunan, rerumputan, and reruntuhan contain established partial shapes plus -an.
  • Do not generate partial forms from new roots; use bare nouns, quantifiers, or established full reduplication.
  • Write partial forms solid, attach affixes normally, and reserve the hyphen for full or changing-sound reduplication.
