Copied Indonesian nouns can make more than one individual visible, but they can also profile different kinds, an assortment, or a category. Buah-buahan often evokes fruits as a varied class, obat-obatan evokes medicines or pharmaceutical products, and buku-buku sejarah can present a set of history books whose authors, periods, or approaches differ. The copy does not require the members to be identical tokens.
This page isolates variety-of-kind readings in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax to dedicated adjacent pages.
Plural members versus an assortment
Simple full reduplication such as buku-buku makes a plural set salient. Depending on context, the set may consist of similar copies or noticeably different members. Reduplication itself does not say “identical.”
Buku-buku di meja itu berasal dari penerbit yang berbeda.
The books on that table come from different publishers.
Toko kecil itu menjual kain-kain dari berbagai daerah.
That small shop sells fabrics from various regions.
Kami mencicipi hidangan-hidangan khas dari lima provinsi.
We sampled specialty dishes from five provinces.
In each example, a copied noun establishes multiple members while another phrase makes internal diversity explicit. By contrast, Saya membeli tiga buku yang sama “I bought three identical books” gives an exact count and explicitly asserts sameness. The grammar of copying never forces that reading.
English plural books is compatible with sameness or variety too, but English speakers often learn Indonesian reduplication as a mechanical plural marker. That shortcut misses why speakers choose copying in catalogues, displays, and descriptions of assortments.
buah-buahan and obat-obatan
The formations buah-buahan and obat-obatan combine a copied base with -an. They commonly name a class, collection, or assortment rather than countable identical objects one by one.
Pasar itu menjual buah-buahan lokal sepanjang tahun.
That market sells assorted local fruit throughout the year.
Buah-buahan segar sebaiknya dicuci sebelum dimakan.
Fresh fruit should be washed before being eaten.
Obat-obatan harus disimpan jauh dari jangkauan anak-anak.
Medicines must be kept out of children's reach.
Petugas menemukan obat-obatan tanpa label di gudang belakang.
The officer found unlabeled medicines in the back warehouse.
Buah can already mean “fruit” generically or refer to an individual fruit in suitable context. Buah-buahan more readily evokes fruits as a range or food category. Obat can mean a medicine or medicine generally; obat-obatan packages medicines as a class or stock.
The exact internal variety remains contextual. A box of one medicine brand can still be referred to within a broader stock of obat-obatan, while a market display may contain many fruit species. The form profiles category or assortment; it does not calculate a fixed number of kinds.
Affix bracketing and spelling
Morphologically, the suffix -an applies to a reduplicated formation: roughly [buah-buah] + -an and [obat-obat] + -an. Standard spelling shows one reduplication hyphen while the suffix attaches at the edge:
- buah-buahan, not buah-buah-an
- obat-obatan, not obat-obat-an
- sayur-sayuran, not sayur-sayur-an
Kami membawa sayur-sayuran segar untuk dimasak bersama.
We brought assorted fresh vegetables to cook together.
Rak itu khusus untuk minuman dan makanan ringan, bukan obat-obatan.
That shelf is specifically for drinks and snacks, not medicines.
The suffix is not repeated on both copies. Affix placement belongs to the whole construction and must be learned from established forms. The affixed reduplication guide develops the paradigms.
Taxonomies with macam-macam and jenis-jenis
Copied category nouns can explicitly organize a taxonomy. Macam-macam X means “various kinds of X,” while jenis-jenis X means “the types/categories of X.”
Penjual itu menawarkan macam-macam buah dari Sumatra dan Jawa.
That vendor offers various kinds of fruit from Sumatra and Java.
Buku ini menjelaskan jenis-jenis obat yang memerlukan resep dokter.
This book explains the types of medicine that require a doctor's prescription.
Museum tersebut menyimpan macam-macam alat musik tradisional.
The museum houses various kinds of traditional musical instruments.
Macam-macam buah overtly says that kinds differ. Buah-buahan presents the category or assortment without naming the taxonomic unit. Jenis-jenis buah foregrounds the individual types as an enumerated or discussed set. These phrases overlap in reference but organize it differently.
Peneliti membandingkan tiga jenis mangga dari kebun yang sama.
The researcher compared three varieties of mango from the same orchard.
The exact numeral counts jenis, so neither mangga nor jenis needs mechanical extra copying. General classifier and measure syntax remains outside this page.
Compound scope: buku-buku sejarah
In buku-buku sejarah, the copied head buku-buku is followed by the field label sejarah. The phrase means multiple history books, potentially differing in author, period, method, or viewpoint.
Perpustakaan baru itu memiliki buku-buku sejarah dari berbagai sudut pandang.
That new library has history books from various perspectives.
Saya membandingkan buku-buku sejarah yang ditulis pada masa berbeda.
I compared history books written in different periods.
Buku-buku sejarah di rak ini membahas kota yang sama, tetapi memakai sumber berbeda.
The history books on this shelf discuss the same city but use different sources.
The copy applies to buku, not sejarah. Writing buku sejarah-sejarah would make no sense for the intended “history books,” because sejarah classifies the books’ subject matter. Morphological and noun-phrase bracketing both matter.
This structure also works with other classifying nouns:
Sekolah membeli buku-buku sains untuk laboratorium baru.
The school bought science books for the new laboratory.
Galeri itu memamerkan foto-foto keluarga dari awal abad kedua puluh.
The gallery displays family photographs from the early twentieth century.
The copied head signals a set; the following noun narrows its type.
Generic categories
Variety forms often serve as generic subjects. They refer to a whole food, product, or biological category rather than to a known pile of objects.
Buah-buahan merupakan sumber serat dan vitamin.
Fruit is a source of fiber and vitamins.
Obat-obatan tertentu dapat berinteraksi dengan makanan.
Certain medicines can interact with food.
Obat-obatan herbal diteliti di laboratorium universitas itu.
Herbal medicines are studied in that university laboratory.
Bare buah and obat can also have generic readings. Choosing the variety form draws attention to a family of members or products. It does not behave like obligatory plural agreement.
Interaction with quantifiers
Quantity and variety are different dimensions. Use banyak buah for a large amount or many pieces, berbagai jenis buah for different types, and buah-buahan for a fruit category or assortment.
Kebun itu menghasilkan banyak buah, terutama mangga.
That orchard produces a lot of fruit, especially mangoes.
Kebun percobaan itu menanam berbagai jenis buah tropis.
That experimental orchard grows various kinds of tropical fruit.
Semua obat-obatan di lemari itu sudah diperiksa tanggal kedaluwarsanya.
All the medicines in that cabinet have had their expiration dates checked.
The last example is not automatically redundant: obat-obatan di lemari itu establishes a known category set, and semua totals over it. Still, do not stack a numeral directly with a variety form to count ordinary items. Say tiga jenis obat for three kinds or tiga tablet for three tablets, not tiga obat-obatan.
Common Mistakes

Incorrect spelling — -an attaches to the entire reduplicated formation.
✅ Rumah sakit itu menyimpan obat-obatan di lemari terkunci.
The hospital stores medicines in a locked cabinet.
Copying the wrong noun in a compound
❌ Saya membaca buku sejarah-sejarah Indonesia.
Incorrect for multiple history books — sejarah classifies the subject matter.

I read Indonesian history books.
Using digit 2 in edited prose
❌ Laporan itu membahas obat2an tradisional.
Incorrect edited spelling — write the reduplicated form in full.
