Verb reduplication can portray an action as repeated within an episode, extended through time, exploratory, casual, or less goal-directed. Mengetuk-ngetuk is repeated tapping, while mencari-cari is continued or wide-ranging searching. These forms do not simply mean that a completed event happened twice.
This page covers the main iterative meanings in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves individual affix paradigms and general classifier syntax to dedicated adjacent pages.
Simplex event versus repeated activity
A simplex verb can report one bounded event or name an activity without saying how it unfolds. Copying the base presents multiple small phases or repeated attempts inside the larger event.
Dimas mengetuk pintu lalu menunggu.
Dimas knocked on the door and then waited.
Dimas mengetuk-ngetuk pintu karena tidak ada jawaban.
Dimas kept knocking on the door because there was no answer.
Rina mencari kunci mobil di dalam tas.
Rina looked for the car key inside her bag.
Rina mencari-cari kunci mobil sejak tadi.
Rina has been searching around for the car key for a while.
The required mengetuk-ngetuk depicts a series of taps within one waiting episode. Mencari-cari expands the search across places, attempts, or time. Neither construction tells us that the action reached its goal: the door may remain closed, and the key may remain missing.
English often uses βkeep,β βaround,β an adverb, or progressive aspect to convey the same texture. Reduplication builds that internal multiplicity into the Indonesian verb.
Iteration without a fixed count
Copied verbs usually leave the number of repetitions open. They are well suited to tapping, shaking, checking, turning pages, or other actions made of short repeated movements.
Anak itu mengetuk-ngetuk meja dengan pensil.
The child kept tapping the table with a pencil.
Ia membuka-buka album lama sambil menunggu tamunya datang.
She leafed through an old album while waiting for her guest.
Anak itu menarik-narik ujung selimut sambil mengantuk.
The child kept tugging at the edge of the blanket while sleepy.
Dia menggeleng-gelengkan kepala setelah membaca pesannya.
She kept shaking her head after reading the message.
Lexical preference matters. Membuka-buka album is conventional for opening or leafing through pages repeatedly, while menarik-narik suits repeated tugging. For βcheck repeatedly,β memeriksa berulang kali is generally more natural than inventing a copied form. There is no rule that every verb has an equally common reduplication; learn established combinations.
When an exact count matters, state it and normally keep the verb simplex:
Dimas mengetuk pintu tiga kali.
Dimas knocked on the door three times.
Saya memeriksa alamatnya dua kali sebelum mengirim paket.
I checked the address twice before sending the package.
Mengetuk tiga kali gives a bounded count. Mengetuk-ngetuk gives an unbounded series or continuing activity.
Duration and continuation
Reduplication can stretch an activity through time even when its physical action is not naturally counted.
Sejak pagi ia mondar-mandir sambil menunggu kabar.
Since morning she has been pacing back and forth while waiting for news.
Kami duduk-duduk di teras sampai hujan berhenti.
We sat around on the veranda until the rain stopped.
Mereka berbincang-bincang setelah makan malam.
They chatted for a while after dinner.
Anak-anak berlari-lari di halaman sebelum kelas dimulai.
The children ran around in the yard before class started.
Duduk-duduk does not mean completing several separate acts of sitting. It presents relaxed sitting as an extended scene. Berbincang-bincang and berlari-lari similarly create diffuse activity. Some forms are conventional and more than the sum of a simple copy.
Aspect words can frame the copied activity:
Dia masih mencari-cari alasan untuk menunda keputusan.
She is still looking around for excuses to delay the decision.
Anak itu sedang mengetuk-ngetuk jendela.
The child is tapping repeatedly on the window.
Masih and sedang locate the activity in its continuation. The reduplication describes internal event shape; it is not itself a full tense or progressive system.
Casual or leisurely activity
Some copied verbs reduce goal-directedness and present an activity as casual, social, or exploratory.
Kami berjalan-jalan di kota tua setelah sarapan.
We strolled around the old town after breakfast.
Saya hanya melihat-lihat; belum mau membeli apa-apa.
I'm just looking around; I don't want to buy anything yet.
Mereka minum-minum di rumah teman setelah pertandingan.
They had drinks socially at a friend's house after the match. (informal)
Keluarga besar kami berkumpul untuk makan-makan akhir pekan ini.
Our extended family is getting together for a meal this weekend. (informal)
Melihat-lihat softens commitment: a shopper is browsing rather than selecting an item. Berjalan-jalan is a stroll or outing, not repeated completed journeys. Minum-minum and makan-makan often suggest a social occasion (informal) rather than a literal sequence of separate drinks or meals.
This attenuation is pragmatic. The copied form can make an activity sound lighter or less consequential, but it does not always do so. Memukul-mukul remains a serious repeated action because the base itself is forceful.
Bare and affixed shapes
Indonesian iterative verbs occur in several morphological patterns. A bare copied root appears in duduk-duduk and conversational jalan-jalan. With active meN-, the visible prefix normally occurs on the first copy: mengetuk-ngetuk, mencari-cari, membuka-buka. With ber-, established forms include berjalan-jalan and berlari-lari.
Kalau capek, duduk-duduk saja di sini.
If you're tired, just sit around here. (informal)
Petugas terus membuka-buka laci untuk mencari dokumen itu.
The officer kept opening the drawers while looking for that document.
Kami berjalan-jalan pelan di tepi danau.
We strolled slowly along the lakeshore.
The correct form is mengetuk-ngetuk, not mengetuk-mengetuk. The derivation is based on a copied root under the active morphology, and spelling shows the established surface pattern. Not every prefix behaves identically in every reduplicated construction, so the full system belongs on affixed reduplication.
Repeated occasions versus internal iteration
The frequency word sering distributes a simplex event across occasions: Dia sering mengetuk pintu saya means she often knocks on my door on different occasions. Reduplicated mengetuk-ngetuk presents repeated taps within the relevant episode. The two can combine when both meanings matter.
Tetangga itu sering mengetuk pintu kami pada malam hari.
That neighbor often knocks on our door at night.
Tadi malam tetangga itu mengetuk-ngetuk pintu kami selama beberapa menit.
Last night that neighbor kept knocking on our door for several minutes.
Dia sering mengetuk-ngetuk meja saat sedang berpikir.
She often taps the table repeatedly while thinking.
The last sentence has repeated occasions from sering and repeated tapping inside each occasion from the copied verb.
Orthography
Use a hyphen in standard full reduplication and preserve affix bracketing: mencari-cari, mengetuk-ngetuk, berjalan-jalan. Never write cari2 or mengetuk2 in edited prose. Digit shortcuts occur in casual digital writing (informal) but obscure the morphology.
Common Mistakes
Copying the whole prefixed verb
β Dimas mengetuk-mengetuk pintu sejak tadi.
Incorrect standard form β the active prefix is not copied onto the second element.
β Dimas mengetuk-ngetuk pintu sejak tadi.
Dimas has been knocking repeatedly on the door.
Reading two visible copies as exactly two events
β Mengetuk-ngetuk berarti mengetuk tepat dua kali.
Incorrect interpretation β reduplication leaves the repetition count open.
β Dimas mengetuk pintu dua kali.
Dimas knocked on the door twice.
Assuming iterative searching reaches its goal
β Rina mencari-cari kunci, jadi kuncinya pasti ditemukan.
Incorrect inference β the copied verb describes the search, not a successful result.
β Rina mencari-cari kunci, tetapi belum menemukannya.
Rina kept searching for the key but hasn't found it yet.
Omitting the hyphen
β Saya hanya melihat lihat barang di etalase.
Incorrect spelling β full reduplication requires a hyphen.
β Saya hanya melihat-lihat barang di etalase.
I'm only looking around at the items in the display.
Using digit 2 in edited prose
β Anak itu mengetuk2 meja dengan pensil.
Incorrect edited spelling β write the copied material in full.
β Anak itu mengetuk-ngetuk sisi meja dengan pensil.
The child kept tapping the side of the table with a pencil.
Key Takeaways
- Verb copying often creates an unbounded activity with repeated or diffuse internal phases.
- Mengetuk-ngetuk gives repeated tapping; mencari-cari gives extended or exploratory searching.
- Copied activity may be leisurely or attenuated, as in melihat-lihat and berjalan-jalan.
- Frequency words distribute events across occasions; verb copying can describe repetition inside each occasion.
- Hyphenate the copy, attach affixes according to established bracketing, and never use digit 2 in edited prose.
