Millions, Billions, and Formal Number Style

Large Indonesian numbers look internationally familiar in digits, but they remain Indonesian in both punctuation and scale words. 1,5 miliar means 1.5 billion, not 1.5 million; 1.500.000 uses points to group digits, not a decimal point. A reader must interpret the formatting and the lexical scale together.

The scale ladder

Indonesian uses the modern short-scale values familiar from contemporary English mathematics, but the word for (10^9) is miliar, not English billion and not million.

The standard spelling is miliar. Milyar is still encountered in older or nonstandard writing, but it is not the EYD V model. This is an honest memorization point: English gives no reliable clue that billion maps to miliar.

Build a fixed mental bridge: juta = million; miliar = billion; triliun = trillion. Never infer miliar from its resemblance to English million.

Building exact large cardinals

Each scale word takes an ordinary multiplier and may be followed by the next lower group.

Jumlah tepatnya dua juta tiga ratus empat puluh lima ribu enam ratus.

The exact number is 2,345,600.

Perusahaan mencatat pendapatan dua miliar tujuh ratus lima puluh juta rupiah.

The company recorded revenue of 2,750,000,000 rupiah.

Anggaran lima triliun dua ratus miliar rupiah dibagi ke beberapa program.

A budget of 5,200,000,000,000 rupiah was divided among several programs.

The groups descend: triliun → miliar → juta → ribu → units. Do not insert dan between every group as English sometimes does. Indonesian normally continues the numeral phrase directly.

Pusat data itu menyimpan satu miliar dua puluh juta rekaman.

That data center stores 1,020,000,000 records.

Nilai ekspornya empat triliun enam miliar rupiah, bukan empat triliun enam juta.

Its export value is 4,006,000,000,000 rupiah, not 4,000,006,000,000.

Zeros inside a group matter. Satu miliar dua puluh juta is 1.020 billion, whereas satu miliar dua puluh is 1,000,000,020. In high-stakes writing, digits can expose that difference more safely.

Points group digits; commas express fractions

In Indonesian-formatted numerals, points separate groups of three digits and commas introduce decimals.

Laporan itu mencantumkan angka 12.450.000, bukan 12,450,000.

The report lists 12,450,000 using Indonesian separators, not English separators.

Produksi tahunan meningkat dari 1,25 juta menjadi 1,4 juta unit.

Annual production rose from 1.25 million to 1.4 million units.

Nilai 2,75 miliar setara dengan 2.750.000.000.

The value 2.75 billion is equivalent to 2,750,000,000.

A decimal comma before a scale word multiplies the entire decimal: 1,2 juta = 1.200.000. Do not read it as two separate integers.

Before comparing an Indonesian table with an English one, identify the locale. The string 2.500 represents two thousand five hundred in Indonesian, while 2,5 represents two and a half.

Mixed digits and scale words improve readability

Long zero strings are exact but visually slow. Institutional, journalistic, and administrative prose often combines digits with a scale word: 4,8 juta penduduk, Rp2,3 miliar, 7 triliun rupiah. This is standard (formal/journalistic), not lazy shorthand.

Proyeksi itu memperkirakan jumlah penduduk wilayah tersebut mencapai 4,8 juta jiwa pada 2030.

The projection estimates that the region's population will reach 4.8 million in 2030.

Sebanyak 1,25 juta pelanggan menggunakan layanan itu setiap bulan.

A total of 1.25 million customers use that service each month.

Pemerintah daerah mengalokasikan Rp2,4 miliar untuk perbaikan jembatan.

The regional government allocated 2.4 billion rupiah for bridge repairs.

Program tersebut memerlukan dana 1,05 triliun rupiah selama lima tahun.

The program requires 1.05 trillion rupiah over five years.

Use a space between the digit and the lexical scale: 2,4 miliar, not 2,4miliar. When Rp is present, it touches the digit: Rp2,4 miliar.

An exact table entry may instead retain every group:

Nilai realisasi yang diaudit adalah Rp2.403.875.250,00.

The audited realized amount is exactly 2,403,875,250 rupiah.

The mixed form sekitar Rp2,4 miliar communicates approximate magnitude. The full form communicates exact accounting precision. Neither is universally more formal; the data purpose decides.

Approximation has several boundaries

Sekitar centers an estimate near a value. Hampir approaches a value without reaching it in the intended reading. Lebih dari and kurang dari set lower and upper boundaries. Sedikitnya gives a minimum and is common in news or reports (journalistic/formal).

Sekitar 6,3 juta orang diperkirakan menerima pemberitahuan itu.

Approximately 6.3 million people are expected to receive that notice.

Jumlah transaksi hampir mencapai dua miliar dalam setahun.

The number of transactions almost reached two billion in one year.

Lebih dari 750 juta entri data lama telah dipindahkan.

More than 750 million old data entries have been moved.

Biaya tahap pertama kurang dari Rp1 miliar.

The cost of the first phase is under one billion rupiah.

Sedikitnya 1,2 juta bibit disiapkan untuk musim tanam berikutnya.

Do not stack incompatible estimators without explaining the relation. Sekitar lebih dari dua juta blurs “near” and “above.” Choose sekitar dua juta for a central estimate or lebih dari dua juta for a lower bound.

Population and statistical style

Population reports commonly combine jumlah penduduk, a scale expression, and jiwa or orang. Jiwa is conventional in demographic totals (formal/statistical); orang is ordinary across registers.

Jumlah penduduk kota itu diperkirakan sebesar 3,15 juta jiwa.

The city's population is estimated at 3.15 million.

Dari 2,6 juta orang yang terdaftar, 61,5% mengisi survei lanjutan.

Of the 2.6 million registered people, 61.5% completed the follow-up survey.

Sampel 12.500 orang tidak boleh dilaporkan sebagai 12,5 juta orang.

A sample of 12,500 people must not be reported as 12.5 million people.

In a table, declare units once—such as dalam juta jiwa “in millions of people”—and then keep every cell on that scale. A bare 3,2 means 3.2 million only because the heading licenses that interpretation.

Budgets and institutional predicates

Large financial values often follow sebesar “amounting to,” senilai “valued at,” mencapai “reach,” or dialokasikan “be allocated.” These predicates reveal whether the number is a size, valuation, result, or assigned amount.

Kementerian mengusulkan anggaran sebesar Rp875 miliar.

The ministry proposed a budget of 875 billion rupiah.

Aset senilai Rp1,7 triliun dicatat dalam laporan tahunan.

Assets valued at 1.7 trillion rupiah were recorded in the annual report.

Realisasi belanja baru mencapai 82,4% dari pagu Rp3,2 triliun.

Realized expenditure has reached only 82.4% of the 3.2-trillion-rupiah ceiling.

The scale word remains singular in Indonesian. English billions may express an imprecise plurality, but miliar-miliar is not the neutral equivalent in a financial report. Use beberapa miliar rupiah or an explicit range.

Scientific quantities

Academic and technical prose uses the same decimal comma. Scientific notation can prevent extremely long strings, while a lexical scale can make a quantity accessible to general readers.

Model itu melakukan sekitar 3,6 triliun operasi selama pengujian.

The model performed approximately 3.6 trillion operations during testing.

Satu sampel mengandung 2,4 miliar partikel yang dapat dideteksi.

One sample contains 2.4 billion detectable particles.

Nilai konstanta itu dibaca enam koma nol dua kali sepuluh pangkat dua puluh tiga.

The constant's value is read as 6.02 times ten to the twenty-third power.

In symbolic mathematical writing, superscript notation is preferable; the sentence above models how Indonesian can verbalize it. Units, significant figures, and uncertainty belong to the relevant scientific style guide (academic).

Se- and ke- attach to number words

Write sejuta, semiliar, and setriliun as single words when se- means one whole scale unit. In ordinary prose, satu miliar may be clearer than less frequent semiliar, but both display the same attachment rule.

Jumlah unduhan itu akhirnya menembus sejuta dalam satu pekan.

The number of downloads finally passed one million in one week.

Pengunjung kesejuta menerima cendera mata dari panitia.

The millionth visitor received a souvenir from the committee.

The word-form ordinal kesejuta is solid. With an Arabic digit, EYD V instead uses a hyphen after ke-, as in ke-2; do not mix those two patterns.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating miliar as million

❌ Anggaran 8 miliar rupiah dipahami sebagai 8 juta rupiah.

Incorrect—miliar corresponds to billion, not million.

✅ Anggaran 8 miliar rupiah setara dengan 8.000 juta rupiah.

A budget of 8 billion rupiah is equivalent to 8,000 million rupiah.

2. Reversing Indonesian separators

❌ Angka 1.500.000 dibaca satu koma lima juta karena titik dianggap tanda desimal.

Incorrect reasoning—the points group thousands; the decimal mixed form is 1,5 juta.

✅ Satu setengah juta dapat ditulis 1.500.000 atau 1,5 juta.

One and a half million can be written 1,500,000 or 1.5 million in Indonesian formatting.

3. Closing a digit onto its scale word

❌ Laporan itu menyebut 4,2juta pengguna aktif.

Incorrect spacing—a digit and the following scale word remain separate.

✅ Laporan itu menyebut 4,2 juta pengguna aktif.

The report mentions 4.2 million active users.

4. Combining conflicting approximation markers

❌ Sekitar lebih dari tiga miliar pesan diproses.

Poor scope—the phrase mixes a central estimate with a lower boundary.

More than three billion messages were processed during that period.

5. Adding an English plural to the scale word

Incorrect—Indonesian scale words do not take English plural endings.
