Academic Indonesian is not ordinary prose with longer words. It organizes knowledge claims so readers can identify what is being defined, whose evidence supports a statement, how strong the inference is, and where agency matters. Nominalization and passive voice help redistribute attention, but they also create ethical choices: a method can be foregrounded without pretending that no researcher made decisions.
This page covers functional academic style rather than individual derivational or voice paradigms. It uses standard EYD V throughout.

Definitions fix the scope of a term
Definitions prevent readers from importing an everyday meaning into a technical argument. Use X adalah/merupakan... for identification and X didefinisikan sebagai... when a source or study deliberately fixes a meaning.
Ketahanan pangan merupakan kondisi terpenuhinya kebutuhan pangan secara cukup, aman, dan berkelanjutan.
Food security is a condition in which food needs are met sufficiently, safely, and sustainably. (academic definition)
Penelitian ini mendefinisikan partisipasi aktif sebagai kehadiran dalam sedikitnya tiga kegiatan.
This study defines active participation as attendance at at least three activities. (operational definition)
Istilah rumah tangga dalam analisis ini mencakup semua orang yang tinggal dan makan dari satu dapur.
The term household in this analysis includes everyone who lives and eats from one kitchen. (study-specific scope)

A definition should not smuggle a contested conclusion into the term itself. Operational definitions describe how a variable is measured, not its universal essence.
Calibrate claims to evidence
Academic verbs form a strength scale. Menunjukkan and mengindikasikan report evidential support; berkaitan dengan states association; membuktikan makes a much stronger claim and is rarely justified by an observational result. Tampaknya and kemungkinan can mark a reasoned but uncertain interpretation.
Hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa kepuasan pengguna meningkat setelah prosedur disederhanakan.
The survey results show that user satisfaction increased after the procedure was simplified. (academic)
Perubahan tersebut tampaknya dipengaruhi oleh perbaikan jadwal layanan.

Citations allocate evidential responsibility
A citation can foreground the researcher, the research, or the proposition. Choose according to the paragraph's informational focus.
Sari (2024) berpendapat bahwa kebijakan tersebut memperluas kesenjangan antardaerah.
Sari (2024) argues that the policy widens disparities between regions. (author-prominent citation)
Penelitian sebelumnya menemukan pola serupa pada wilayah pesisir (Halim, 2022).

Do not attach a citation to a paragraph containing several unrelated claims if readers cannot tell which proposition it supports. Citation punctuation must follow the required institutional style guide; EYD V does not replace a journal's reference system.
A literature-review sentence
Meskipun beberapa penelitian mengaitkan kepadatan permukiman dengan rendahnya kualitas udara (Nugroho, 2020; Lestari, 2022), peran pola perjalanan harian masih jarang dianalisis.

This sentence synthesizes a shared finding, cites its sources, and identifies the gap the present study will address.
Nominalization makes processes into objects of reasoning
Forms such as pengumpulan, peningkatan, penurunan, penerapan, and pengambilan keputusan let writers compare, measure, or refer back to processes. They are valuable when the process itself is the topic.

Data collection took place from January to March 2026. (academic process as topic)

Long noun stacks copied from English should be unpacked into Indonesian relations with untuk, terhadap, dalam, mengenai, or a relative clause. The order of English nouns does not automatically reveal which element modifies which.
Passive voice redistributes agency
Academic passives foreground materials, procedures, and results. Agent omission is appropriate when the actor is obvious, generic, or methodologically unimportant. Active voice is clearer when a research decision, interpretation, or responsibility matters.
Setiap sampel diuji sebanyak tiga kali pada suhu yang sama.
Each sample was tested three times at the same temperature. (method-focused passive)
Jawaban peserta dikelompokkan berdasarkan tema yang muncul secara berulang.
Participants' responses were grouped according to recurring themes. (method-focused passive)
Tim peneliti memilih tiga lokasi berdasarkan variasi akses jalan.

Metadiscourse and paragraph logic
A strong paragraph normally develops one controlled move: claim, evidence, interpretation, limitation, or transition. Metadiscourse tells readers which move is occurring.
Bagian ini membandingkan kedua model berdasarkan ketepatan dan biaya penerapan.
This section compares the two models in terms of accuracy and implementation cost. (academic metadiscourse)

A model abstract
An abstract compresses problem, method, result, and implication without becoming a list of headings.

This study analyzes the relationship between distance to bus stops and public-transport use in four districts. (abstract: aim)

Revising a discussion claim for stance
Klaim terlalu mutlak: Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa halte yang dekat selalu menyebabkan warga naik bus.
Overabsolute claim: This study proves that a nearby stop always causes residents to take the bus.
Klaim terkalibrasi: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jarak halte berkaitan dengan frekuensi penggunaan bus, meskipun faktor lain juga berperan.
Calibrated claim: The study results show that stop distance is associated with bus-use frequency, although other factors also play a role.
The revision changes proof to supported association, removes always, and states residual causes. It becomes more defensible, not weaker.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English noun stack
❌ Evaluasi program peningkatan layanan akses warga hasil tahap awal.
Opaque noun stacking—the modification relations cannot be recovered reliably.

2. Making an absolute claim from limited evidence

Unsupported absolute claim—the sample cannot license a national universal.

3. Hiding an important research decision in a passive
❌ Tiga desa dipilih tanpa penjelasan mengenai pihak atau kriteria pemilihannya.
Methodologically incomplete—the passive conceals a consequential sampling decision.

4. Using a citation without clear scope
