Stance Markers: menurut saya, sebenarnya, rupanya

Stance markers tell listeners not only what is being claimed but also who accepts responsibility for knowing or evaluating it. Menurut saya presents a viewpoint as the speaker's; sebenarnya corrects an incomplete picture or reveals the underlying situation; rupanya presents a conclusion reached from evidence or later discovery.

English speakers often translate all three with loose phrases such as “I think,” “actually,” or “apparently.” That misses their deeper organization. Indonesian makes the source and status of a claim visible, and a mistaken marker can imply that you merely guessed, that your listener was wrong, or that new evidence has appeared.

For sentence-internal expressions of certainty and probability, see stance adverbs. Here the focus is how an entire discourse move is attributed, corrected, or inferred.

Three distributions of responsibility

MarkerWhat it doesKnowledge responsibilityRegister
menurut sayaframes a judgment or recommendation as a viewpointthe speaker owns the evaluationneutral; menurut hemat saya is formal
sebenarnyareplaces or qualifies a mistaken/incomplete assumptionthe speaker claims access to a more accurate accountneutral
rupanyareports an inference or discoveryavailable evidence licenses the conclusionneutral; common in narrative and explanation

Menurut saya, ruang tunggu ini perlu diperluas.

In my opinion, this waiting room needs to be enlarged.

Sebenarnya, ruang tunggu itu sudah diperluas tahun lalu.

Actually, the waiting room was already enlarged last year. (correction)

Lampu di ruang sebelah masih menyala; rupanya rapatnya belum selesai.

The light in the next room is still on; apparently the meeting has not finished. (inference)

💡
Ask what authorizes the sentence. Your own judgment favors menurut saya; a more accurate account favors sebenarnya; observed clues or later discovery favor rupanya.

Menurut + source means “according to + source.” With saya, it openly limits a claim to the speaker's evaluation. This is useful when evidence does not force a single conclusion, particularly for advice, preferences, interpretation, and polite disagreement (neutral).

Menurut saya, kita sebaiknya menguji sistemnya sekali lagi sebelum diluncurkan.

In my opinion, we should test the system once more before launching it.

Menurut saya, penjelasan kedua lebih mudah dipahami oleh pembaca umum.

In my view, the second explanation is easier for general readers to understand.

Saya memahami alasannya, tetapi menurut saya risikonya masih terlalu besar.

I understand the reasoning, but in my opinion the risk is still too great. (polite disagreement)

Menurut kami, usul tersebut perlu dibahas bersama warga terlebih dahulu.

In our view, the proposal needs to be discussed with residents first. (institutional or group viewpoint)

The source can be someone or something other than the speaker. Then the phrase reports attribution rather than personal stance.

Menurut dokter, demamnya akan turun dalam dua hari.

According to the doctor, the fever will go down within two days.

Menurut laporan awal, kerusakan hanya terjadi pada satu mesin.

According to the preliminary report, the damage occurred in only one machine. (formal)

Menurut hemat saya means roughly “in my considered opinion” (formal). It is appropriate in a speech or formal discussion, not more objectively true than menurut saya.

Menurut hemat saya, perubahan ini memerlukan masa transisi yang lebih panjang.

In my considered opinion, this change requires a longer transition period. (formal)

Sebenarnya corrects the active picture

Sebenarnya introduces what the speaker treats as the underlying or more accurate situation. It can correct an explicit statement, revise an inference, or gently disclose a fact the listener does not yet know. Its force comes from contrast with an available assumption; without such a contrast, it may sound as if someone has been mistaken.

Saya bukan menolak tawarannya. Sebenarnya, saya hanya butuh waktu untuk berpikir.

I'm not rejecting the offer. Actually, I just need time to think.

Sebenarnya, nama saya tercantum di halaman kedua, bukan halaman pertama.

Actually, my name is listed on the second page, not the first.

Dia kelihatan pendiam, tetapi sebenarnya sangat suka bercerita.

She looks quiet, but she is actually very fond of telling stories.

Sebenarnya, saya sudah ingin membicarakan hal ini sejak minggu lalu.

To be honest, I have wanted to discuss this since last week. (gentle disclosure)

Rapatnya bukan dibatalkan; sebenarnya, jadwalnya dipindahkan ke hari Kamis.

The meeting wasn't canceled; in fact, it was moved to Thursday. (correction)

In a delicate conversation, sebenarnya can soften entry into a correction because it frames the repair as clarification. It does not automatically make the content polite: tone, address terms, and an acknowledgment of the other person's position still matter.

Rupanya presents discovery or inference

Rupanya says that the proposition has become apparent from signs, consequences, or information discovered after an earlier state of uncertainty. The speaker is not merely giving a free opinion; the claim is answerable to evidence.

Pintu kantor masih terkunci. Rupanya, penjaganya belum datang.

The office door is still locked. Apparently, the guard has not arrived yet.

Saya baru membaca pesannya; rupanya mereka tiba lebih cepat dari jadwal.

I just read their message; apparently they arrived earlier than scheduled.

Tidak ada satu pun meja kosong. Rupanya, restoran ini sangat ramai pada Jumat malam.

There isn't a single empty table. Apparently, this restaurant is very busy on Friday evenings.

Rupanya, berkas itu tersimpan dengan nama yang berbeda.

It turns out that the file was saved under a different name. (discovery)

Anak itu terus menatap panggung; rupanya ia mengenal salah satu pemain.

The child kept looking at the stage; apparently he knew one of the performers. (inference)

Ternyata often presents a more definite, confirmed, or expectation-defying result; rupanya comfortably leaves the reasoning visible as an appearance or realization. The boundary is not mechanical, and both can translate “it turns out.”

Setelah nomornya diperiksa, ternyata tiket itu berlaku untuk besok.

After the number was checked, it turned out that the ticket was valid for tomorrow. (confirmed discovery)

Dari cara mereka saling menyapa, rupanya mereka sudah lama berteman.

From the way they greeted each other, they apparently had been friends for a long time. (evidence-based inference)

One claim, three calibrations

Consider the claim that the bus route should be changed. The propositional topic is similar, but each marker supplies a different warrant.

Menurut saya, rute bus itu perlu diubah agar melewati rumah sakit.

In my opinion, that bus route needs to be changed so that it passes the hospital. (speaker's recommendation)

Sebenarnya, rute bus itu sudah diubah sejak awal bulan ini.

Actually, that bus route has already been changed since the beginning of this month. (correction)

Halte lama sudah dicopot; rupanya rute bus itu akan diubah.

The old bus stop has been removed; apparently that bus route is going to be changed. (inference from evidence)

English I think can blur opinion and uncertain inference. Indonesian encourages you to say whether the thought is an evaluation you own or a conclusion prompted by evidence.

Position, commas, and stacking

At the start of a clause, an orienting stance phrase is normally followed by a comma in careful writing: Menurut saya, ... Sebenarnya, ... Rupanya, ... Medial placement is also possible when the marker has narrower scope.

Keputusan itu, menurut saya, terlalu tergesa-gesa.

That decision, in my opinion, was too hasty.

Mereka rupanya belum menerima undangan yang kami kirim.

They apparently have not received the invitation we sent.

Do not stack several stance expressions unless each contributes a distinct layer. A chain such as menurut saya, sebenarnya, mungkin, tampaknya forces the reader to guess whether the speaker is correcting, speculating, or merely giving an opinion.

💡
Politeness often comes from accurate calibration. Marking a recommendation as menurut saya leaves room for alternatives; using sebenarnya instead can imply that you possess the correct facts.

Common Mistakes

1. Using rupanya for a pure personal preference

❌ Rupanya, warna biru lebih bagus untuk ruang rapat.

Wrong stance unless evidence has led to this discovery—this is presented as a personal preference.

✅ Menurut saya, warna biru lebih cocok untuk ruang rapat yang baru.

In my opinion, blue is more suitable for the new meeting room.

2. Treating sebenarnya as a neutral filler

❌ Sebenarnya, matahari terbit di sebelah timur.

Poor discourse use—without a competing assumption, sebenarnya creates a pointless correction.

✅ Banyak orang mengira jendelanya menghadap utara. Sebenarnya, jendela itu menghadap timur.

Many people think the window faces north. In fact, it faces east.

3. Reporting a source without menurut

❌ Laporan awal, kereta tambahan akan beroperasi besok.

Ill-formed attribution—the source noun phrase needs menurut or another reporting construction.

✅ Menurut laporan awal, kereta tambahan akan mulai beroperasi besok pagi.

According to the preliminary report, an additional train will begin operating tomorrow morning. (formal)

4. Stacking redundant stance markers

❌ Menurut saya, sebenarnya, rupanya mungkin jadwalnya perlu diubah.

Overloaded stance—the sentence simultaneously claims opinion, correction, discovery, and possibility without a coherent relation.

✅ Menurut saya, jadwalnya perlu diubah karena dua pembicara belum dapat hadir.

In my opinion, the schedule needs to be changed because two speakers cannot yet attend.

5. Omitting the comma after an initial viewpoint frame

❌ Menurut saya pilihan ketiga paling realistis.

Nonstandard careful punctuation—the initial stance phrase should be set off with a comma.

✅ Menurut saya, pilihan ketiga paling realistis untuk kondisi sekarang.

In my opinion, the third option is the most realistic under current conditions.

Key Takeaways

  • Menurut saya assigns an evaluation to the speaker rather than presenting it as settled fact.
  • Sebenarnya repairs or deepens an active assumption.
  • Rupanya makes an inference or discovery answerable to evidence.
  • A well-chosen stance marker distributes responsibility for knowledge; stacking markers obscures it.
