Topic Shifts: nah, mengenai, adapun, soal

Indonesian offers several ways to announce what the next stretch of talk or writing will be about. Nah, soal, mengenai, and adapun all help manage topics, but they sit on a pronounced register ladder: a marker that sounds cooperative in a meeting can sound chatty in a report, while a marker natural in a regulation can sound theatrical over coffee.

This page concerns discourse-level topic management: opening, changing, resuming, and contrasting topics. It does not replace the separate accounts of conjunction syntax or the interpersonal meanings of the particle nah.

The register ladder

MarkerDiscourse jobTypical register
nahsignals that the speaker is ready to advance to a connected topic or stagespoken, informal to careful spoken
soal + nounmakes a matter the current conversational topic, often contrastivelyneutral spoken; informal writing
mengenai + nounframes the following statement as concerning a specified matterneutral to formal
adapun + noun phraseopens a separately organized subtopic, often after another itemformal, bureaucratic, or literary

Nah, sekarang kita beralih ke jadwal pelaksanaannya.

Now, let's move on to the implementation schedule. (spoken meeting)

Soal anggaran, kita perlu menunggu persetujuan direktur.

As for the budget, we need to wait for the director's approval. (neutral spoken)

Mengenai jadwal pelaksanaan, tim lapangan mengusulkan awal Oktober.

Regarding the implementation schedule, the field team proposes early October. (formal)

Adapun sumber pendanaan kegiatan tersebut masih dalam tahap pembahasan.

As for the funding source for the activity, it is still under discussion. (formal)

💡
A topic marker does not merely translate English “about.” It tells the audience how the new material relates to the discourse already under way and what level of formality the speaker has chosen.

Nah advances a spoken agenda

Sentence-initial nah presents the next topic as timely and connected to what has just been settled. It often occurs with an explicit transition such as sekarang, selanjutnya, kembali ke, or bagaimana dengan. This makes it useful in conversation, teaching, interviews, and spoken presentations (informal to careful spoken).

Biaya sewanya sudah jelas. Nah, bagaimana dengan biaya perawatannya?

The rental cost is clear. Now, what about the maintenance cost? (spoken meeting)

Nah, kita kembali ke pertanyaan peserta tadi.

Now, let's return to the participant's earlier question. (careful spoken)

Masalah teknis sudah selesai. Nah, selanjutnya kita bahas pembagian tugas.

The technical issue is settled. Now, next we'll discuss the division of duties. (spoken meeting)

Nah, sebelum berganti topik, apakah ada yang ingin menambahkan?

Now, before we change topics, would anyone like to add anything? (meeting chair)

Initial Nah, is capitalized after a full stop and normally followed by a comma in edited transcription. In formal legal, bureaucratic, or academic prose, its spoken attention-managing force is out of place; state the relation with mengenai, berkenaan dengan, or a descriptive heading instead.

Soal creates contrastive aboutness

Soal + noun phrase means “as for / on the matter of.” It often selects one matter from several and says, in effect, “with respect to this particular issue.” It is common in everyday speech and journalism, and it can appear in moderately formal contexts, but mengenai is safer in official correspondence.

Soal tempat, aku ikut keputusan kalian saja.

As for the venue, I'll just go along with your decision. (informal)

Soal siapa yang memimpin tim, kita putuskan setelah wawancara.

As for who will lead the team, we'll decide after the interviews. (neutral spoken)

Harga tiketnya memang naik. Soal pelayanannya, saya belum melihat banyak perubahan.

The ticket price has indeed gone up. As for the service, I haven't seen much change. (neutral)

Soal keterlambatan kemarin, pihak operator sudah meminta maaf.

Regarding yesterday's delay, the operator has apologized. (journalistic or spoken)

Because soal can also be a noun meaning “question,” “problem,” or “matter,” position and context matter. In soal ujian, it usually means “exam question”; in initial Soal ujian besok, ..., it frames tomorrow's exam as a topic.

Mengenai frames a neutral or formal topic

Mengenai introduces the matter to which a statement applies (neutral to formal). It works in emails, reports, announcements, and careful speech. Unlike conversational nah, it does not claim that a new stage has become timely; it simply delimits the following statement's domain.

Mengenai permohonan Ibu, kami masih memerlukan satu dokumen pendukung.

Regarding your request, we still need one supporting document. (formal correspondence)

Saya ingin memberi penjelasan singkat mengenai perubahan jadwal bus.

I would like to give a brief explanation concerning the change to the bus schedule. (neutral-formal)

Mengenai hasil survei kedua, perbedaannya dengan hasil survei pertama tidak signifikan secara statistik.

Regarding the second survey results, their difference from the first survey results is not statistically significant. (academic)

Ada pertanyaan mengenai prosedur pengembalian dana?

Are there any questions about the refund procedure? (service setting)

When the mengenai phrase is moved to the beginning to frame the whole clause, a comma helps mark that boundary: Mengenai X, ... A short postverbal complement normally has no comma: bertanya mengenai X. See topic prepositions for its phrase-level syntax.

Adapun opens a formally partitioned subtopic

Adapun is written as one word because its -pun is part of a lexicalized conjunction. It introduces a new, separately organized subject, often after a preceding item has been dealt with. This makes it common in statutes, reports, formal explanations, and literary narration (formal; sometimes bureaucratic or literary).

Laporan pertama membahas kondisi bangunan. Adapun kebutuhan renovasi dijelaskan dalam lampiran dua.

The first report discusses the condition of the building. The renovation requirements, for their part, are explained in appendix two. (formal)

Ketua bertanggung jawab atas kebijakan umum. Adapun pelaksanaan harian dikoordinasikan oleh sekretaris.

The chair is responsible for general policy. Day-to-day implementation, meanwhile, is coordinated by the secretary. (formal)

Peserta dewasa ditempatkan di aula utama. Adapun peserta anak-anak menggunakan ruang di sebelah perpustakaan.

Adult participants are placed in the main hall. Child participants, by contrast, use the room beside the library. (formal)

Adapun penyebab gangguan tersebut masih diselidiki oleh tim teknis.

As for the cause of the disruption, it is still being investigated by the technical team. (formal)

In this construction, adapun directly introduces its topic noun phrase; do not mechanically insert a comma after it. A full stop before Adapun clearly marks the new sentence. Its contrast can be weak: sometimes it merely partitions material, and sometimes it sets the second topic against the first.

💡
Use adapun when the text itself has been divided into formal subtopics. Do not use it merely to sound sophisticated: without a prior or anticipated partition, it can feel inflated.

Parallel topic shifts in a meeting transcript

The same agenda can be managed at progressively different levels of explicitness. This transcript is natural spoken Indonesian, so nah and soal do most of the work.

Rina: Biaya konsumsi sudah disetujui. Nah, sekarang kita masuk ke urusan transportasi.

Rina: The catering budget has been approved. Now, let's move on to transportation. (meeting transcript)

Dedi: Soal bus, saya sudah meminta penawaran dari dua perusahaan.

Dedi: As for the buses, I've requested quotations from two companies. (meeting transcript)

Rina: Baik. Mengenai titik penjemputan, apakah semuanya sudah memberi alamat?

Rina: Good. Regarding the pickup points, has everyone provided an address? (careful spoken meeting)

Dedi: Belum. Nah, soal itu saya akan menghubungi peserta sore ini.

Dedi: Not yet. Now, as for that, I'll contact the participants this afternoon. (meeting transcript)

The same transitions in a formal report

The written report removes turn-management cues and exposes a document hierarchy. Notice that the content relations remain parallel even though the markers change.

Mengenai konsumsi, panitia telah menyetujui anggaran yang diajukan penyedia.

Regarding catering, the committee has approved the budget proposed by the provider. (formal report)

Adapun transportasi peserta akan disediakan oleh perusahaan yang dipilih melalui proses penawaran.

As for participant transportation, it will be provided by a company selected through a bidding process. (formal report)

Mengenai titik penjemputan, sebagian peserta belum menyampaikan alamat lengkap.

Regarding pickup points, some participants have not yet provided complete addresses. (formal report)

Adapun tindak lanjut atas kekurangan data tersebut akan dilakukan oleh sekretariat.

As for follow-up on the missing data, it will be handled by the secretariat. (formal report)

Common Mistakes

1. Using adapun as a casual filler

❌ Adapun, kamu besok jadi ikut makan bakso enggak?

Register error—adapun does not work as a casual hesitation filler, and the comma wrongly separates it from its topic.

✅ Ngomong-ngomong, kamu besok jadi ikut makan bakso enggak?

By the way, are you joining us for meatball soup tomorrow? (informal)

❌ Nah, hak penyewa selanjutnya diatur dalam Pasal 7.

Inappropriate legal register—nah is a spoken transition cue.

✅ Adapun hak penyewa diatur lebih lanjut dalam Pasal 7.

The tenant's rights are further regulated in Article 7. (legal/formal)

3. Separating the lexicalized -pun in adapun

❌ Ada pun jadwal pemeriksaan akan diumumkan kemudian.

Incorrect spelling—adapun is a lexicalized conjunction written as one word.

✅ Adapun jadwal pemeriksaan akan diumumkan kemudian melalui situs resmi.

As for the examination schedule, it will be announced later on the official website. (formal)

4. Fusing a multiword topic expression

❌ Berkenaandengan perubahan rute, penumpang akan menerima pemberitahuan.

Incorrect spacing—berkenaan dengan is a multiword expression.

✅ Berkenaan dengan perubahan rute, penumpang akan menerima pemberitahuan melalui aplikasi.

Regarding the route change, passengers will receive a notification through the app. (formal)

5. Omitting the boundary after a fronted topic phrase

❌ Mengenai biaya tambahan kami belum menerima keputusan resmi.

Unclear careful punctuation—the initial framing phrase should be set off from the clause.

✅ Mengenai biaya tambahan, kami belum menerima keputusan resmi dari pengelola.

Regarding additional charges, we have not received an official decision from management. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Nah advances connected spoken discourse; soal selects a conversational matter.
  • Mengenai neutrally frames what a statement concerns and travels well into formal prose.
  • Adapun partitions formal text into separately treated topics and is written solid, normally without a comma before its following noun phrase.
  • Topic management is a register choice as much as a semantic choice.
