Indonesian opinion expressions do more than soften a sentence. Menurut saya assigns a view to the speaker; bagi saya marks a personal standard or experience; saya kira presents a considered but revisable belief; saya rasa gives a subjective assessment; mungkin marks possibility; pasti marks strong certainty; and rupanya presents a realization prompted by evidence.
Choosing the frame assigns epistemic responsibility: who judges the claim, how strong the commitment is, and what evidence supports it. This page teaches portable stance patterns rather than thematic opinion vocabulary or regional formula lists. The stance-marker guide develops more advanced combinations.
The stance map
| Frame | Main responsibility | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| menurut saya | speaker as holder of a view | explicit opinion, often reasoned |
| bagi saya | speaker as experiencer or personal standard | taste, relevance, value |
| saya kira | speaker as reasoner | tentative belief or estimate |
| saya rasa | speaker as subjective assessor | impression, gentle judgment |
| mungkin | speaker leaves alternatives open | possibility |
| pasti | speaker commits strongly | certainty or confident inference |
| rupanya | new evidence corrects/updates belief | apparently/as it turns out |
Menurut saya, jalur sepeda baru itu perlu diperpanjang sampai stasiun.
In my opinion, the new bicycle lane should be extended to the station. (speaker’s view)
For me, the seat near the window is much more comfortable. (personal preference)
Saya kira rapatnya akan selesai sebelum makan siang.
I think the meeting will end before lunch. (revisable estimate)
I feel/think the tone of that letter is too harsh for a new customer. (subjective assessment)
Menurut saya: an attributable view
Menurut also introduces other sources: menurut dokter, menurut laporan, menurut aturan. With saya, the speaker explicitly owns the position (neutral/formal).
Menurut saya, rencana ini cukup realistis jika anggarannya disetujui bulan ini.
In my opinion, this plan is realistic enough if its budget is approved this month.
In my view, the second explanation fits the data in the table better.
Menurut dokter, luka itu perlu diperiksa lagi minggu depan.
According to the doctor, that wound needs to be checked again next week. (attributed expert source)
Menurut jadwal resmi, kereta tambahan berangkat pukul 18.45.
According to the official schedule, the additional train leaves at 6:45 p.m. (documentary source)
Do not treat menurut saya as evidence by itself. It marks ownership; the following reason makes the view accountable.
In my opinion, maintenance costs will rise because spare-parts prices are increasing. (view plus reason)
Bagi saya: a personal standard or experience
Bagi saya means roughly “for me/as far as I am concerned.” It is especially natural for tastes, personal importance, comfort, and individual interpretation. The claim need not generalize to everyone.
Bagi saya, sup ini sudah cukup asin.
For me, this soup is salty enough. (personal taste threshold)
For me, time with family is more important than an expensive gift. (personal value)
For me, reading on the train actually helps reduce stress. (personal experience)
To me, the ending of the film feels too rushed. (personal aesthetic response)
Menurut saya could present the same evaluation as a debatable view. Bagi saya foregrounds the speaker-specific standard and reduces any implication that others must share it.
Saya kira and saya rasa
Both often translate “I think,” but their typical profiles differ.
Saya kira: a revisable conclusion or estimate
Saya kira paketnya tiba besok, tetapi saya akan memeriksa nomor pelacakannya.
I think the package arrives tomorrow, but I will check the tracking number. (tentative estimate)
I think there is an error in the final total on this bill. (reasoned suspicion)
Saya kira kita memerlukan dua kendaraan, bukan satu.
I think we need two vehicles, not one. (practical estimate)
Saya kira Bu Maya belum menerima perubahan jadwalnya.
I think Ms. Maya has not received the schedule change yet. (revisable belief)
Saya rasa: subjective assessment and interactional softening
I think this room is too small for thirty participants. (subjective assessment)
Saya rasa kita sebaiknya membahas persoalan ini setelah semua data tersedia.
I think we should discuss this issue after all the data are available. (careful proposal)
Saya rasa dia tidak bermaksud menyinggung siapa pun.
I feel that she did not mean to offend anyone. (interpretation of intention)
I think the second coffee tastes more balanced. (sensory judgment)
The distinction is not absolute; actual speakers overlap them. The reliable insight is that both make the speaker responsible and leave room for revision, while saya rasa often sounds more experiential or interactionally gentle.
Mungkin: keep alternatives open
Mungkin marks a proposition as possible rather than certain. It can stand initially or before the relevant predicate.
Mungkin hujan turun setelah matahari terbenam.
It may rain after sunset. (possibility)
Rina mungkin masih berada di ruang rapat.
Rina may still be in the meeting room.
Perhaps we can move the meeting to Thursday. (soft proposal)
Keterlambatan itu mungkin disebabkan oleh pemeriksaan tambahan.
The delay may be caused by an additional inspection. (formal hypothesis)
Placing mungkin in a suggestion lowers the speaker’s claim on the decision, not necessarily the objective probability of the action.
Pasti: certainty or compelling inference
Pasti expresses strong confidence. The source can be direct knowledge, an official decision, or a compelling inference. State the evidence when listeners need to evaluate that certainty.
The event definitely starts at eight because the final schedule has been approved.
Lampu kantornya masih menyala; dia pasti belum pulang.
Her office light is still on; she definitely has not gone home. (inference from evidence)
Kami pasti menghubungi Bapak sebelum teknisi datang.
We will definitely contact you before the technician arrives, sir. (service commitment)
If all the doors are locked from the inside, the perpetrator must still be in the building. (logical inference)
Overusing pasti can present hope or preference as knowledge. Use mungkin, saya kira, or a future commitment when certainty is not warranted.
Rupanya: evidence changes the picture
Rupanya introduces something the speaker has just discovered or inferred: “apparently/as it turns out.” It often corrects an earlier expectation.
Apparently, that shop closes earlier during the fasting month. (newly discovered fact)
I waited at the front door, but it turns out the group entered from the back.
Rupanya data bulan Mei belum dimasukkan ke laporan akhir.
It turns out the May data have not been entered into the final report.
Kami mengira mesinnya rusak; rupanya kabelnya hanya longgar.
We thought the machine was broken; it turns out the cable was merely loose.
Do not use rupanya as a generic hedge when no discovery or inference is involved.
Name the evidence source
A bare opinion and an evidence-based claim impose different responsibilities. Indonesian can mark sources with menurut + source, berdasarkan + evidence, dari + observation, or a reporting clause.
Berdasarkan prakiraan cuaca, hujan lebat mungkin turun pada malam hari.
Based on the weather forecast, heavy rain may fall at night. (probability plus source)
Menurut petugas stasiun, jalur dua akan dibuka kembali setelah pemeriksaan.
According to the station officer, platform two will reopen after inspection. (reported source)
Dari suara mesinnya, saya kira kipas pendingin perlu dibersihkan.
Judging from the engine sound, I think the cooling fan needs cleaning. (observation plus inference)
Laporan keuangan menunjukkan bahwa penjualan meningkat selama tiga bulan berturut-turut.
The financial report shows that sales increased for three consecutive months. (documentary evidence)
They say/the report is that the road to the village is passable again. (informal hearsay; source left vague)
Katanya is useful in conversation (informal/neutral spoken), but a formal report should name the source.
One claim at four commitment levels
Claim: the restaurant is suitable for a group dinner.
For me, that restaurant is comfortable for a family meal. (personal taste)
In my opinion, the restaurant suits a group because it has several large tables. (reasoned view)
The restaurant may suit our group, but I have not seen the menu options. (probability)
The restaurant will definitely suit our group; its private room is confirmed and options for guests with allergies are available. (certainty with evidence)
The factual topic stays stable. The frame changes the speaker’s responsibility and evidential commitment.
Situation-response patterns
Asking for a view
A: Menurut Ibu, bagian mana yang paling perlu diperbaiki? B: Menurut saya, kesimpulannya perlu dibuat lebih singkat.
A: In your view, which section most needs revision? B: In my opinion, the conclusion needs to be shorter. (formal feedback)
Correcting certainty
A: Busnya pasti tiba dalam lima menit. B: Belum tentu; jalan utama sedang ditutup.
A: The bus will definitely arrive in five minutes. B: Not necessarily; the main road is closed. (spoken correction of certainty)
Updating from evidence
A: Saya kira rapatnya di lantai dua. B: Rupanya dipindahkan ke aula bawah.
A: I think the meeting is on the second floor. B: Apparently, it has been moved to the lower hall. (evidence update)
Taste without universalizing

A: How is the chili sauce? B: For me, it is a little too sweet. (personal taste)
Common Mistakes
1. Presenting a personal opinion as bare fact
Overclaimed personal evaluation—the sentence presents taste and universal reaction as fact.
For me, the novel’s ending is less than satisfying because the conflict resolves too quickly.
2. Stacking every stance marker
❌ Menurut saya, saya rasa mungkin barangkali rapatnya akan terlambat.
Overstacked stance—the markers do not each add a clear, distinct commitment.
I think the meeting will start late because the speaker is still traveling.
3. Using pasti without adequate evidence
❌ Saya belum melihat jadwalnya, tetapi acaranya pasti selesai sebelum siang.
Unwarranted certainty—the speaker explicitly lacks the relevant evidence.
✅ Saya belum melihat jadwalnya, jadi acaranya mungkin selesai sebelum siang.
I have not seen the schedule, so the event may end before noon.
4. Using rupanya without a discovery
❌ Rupanya saya suka teh tanpa gula setiap pagi.
Incorrect discourse fit—no new evidence or corrected expectation motivates rupanya.
✅ Setelah mencobanya selama seminggu, rupanya saya lebih suka teh tanpa gula.
After trying it for a week, it turns out I prefer tea without sugar.
5. Treating menurut saya as proof
Incorrect reasoning—marking a belief does not establish its factual accuracy.
✅ Menurut saya, angkanya masuk akal, tetapi sumber aslinya tetap perlu diperiksa.
In my opinion, the figure is plausible, but the original source still needs checking.
