Agreeing and Disagreeing

Indonesian agreement distinguishes several social actions. Iya acknowledges or confirms; benar/betul validates factual accuracy; setuju supports a view or proposal; tentu presents agreement or willingness as expected. Disagreement often begins by preserving alignment—accepting one point, marking uncertainty, or locating the claim as a personal judgment—before introducing contrast.

This page teaches nationally portable situation-response patterns, not every regional formula. The central skill is to say what you accept and where you differ. A blunt initial tidak can sound like rejection of the entire previous turn, especially in a meeting, classroom, or upward interaction. The pragmatics of agreement develops more advanced face-management choices.

Iya, saya sudah menerima undangan rapatnya.

Yes, I have received the meeting invitation. (confirmation)

Benar, tenggat pengumpulan diperpanjang sampai hari Jumat.

Correct, the submission deadline has been extended until Friday. (factual accuracy)

I agree with the proposal to open the service on Saturdays. (support for a proposal)

Tentu, saya bisa membantu menyiapkan kursinya.

Of course, I can help arrange the chairs. (willing agreement)

💡
Use benar for a proposition that can be accurate, setuju for a position that can be supported, and iya when simple acknowledgment is enough.

Iya can acknowledge without endorsing

In conversation, iya can mean “yes,” “I hear you,” or “I recognize that point.” It does not always commit the speaker to the proposal.

A: Pesannya sudah dibaca? B: Iya, tadi pagi.

A: Has the message been read? B: Yes, this morning. (confirmation)

A: Biaya sewanya naik lagi. B: Iya, saya juga baru melihat tagihannya.

A: The rent has gone up again. B: Yes, I just saw the bill too. (shared acknowledgment)

Yes, I understand your reasoning, sir, but I cannot yet agree to that schedule. (acknowledgment without endorsement)

Iya, silakan lanjutkan. Saya sedang mencatat poin utamanya.

Yes, please continue. I am noting the main points. (listener acknowledgment)

If a decision matters, ask Apakah setuju? rather than inferring commitment from repeated iya.

Saya tahu usulnya sudah didengar, tetapi apakah semua anggota benar-benar setuju?

I know the proposal has been heard, but do all members actually agree?

Benar confirms facts; setuju supports positions

Betul, bus terakhir berangkat pukul 22.30 dari terminal lama.

That’s right, the last bus leaves at 10:30 p.m. from the old terminal. (spoken factual confirmation)

Data pada tabel pertama benar, tetapi judul kolomnya tertukar.

The data in the first table are correct, but the column headings are reversed.

Saya setuju bahwa ruang tunggu perlu diperluas.

I agree that the waiting room needs to be expanded.

We disagree with the plan to close the library on weekends. (formal position)

Tidak benar challenges truth; tidak setuju withholds support. They are not interchangeable.

The statement that all participants were late is not true. (factual correction)

The figures are correct, but I disagree with the conclusion drawn from them.

Tentu strengthens willing or expected alignment

Tentu and tentu saja can answer a request, affirm an inference, or present cooperation as unsurprising. Intonation matters: warm Tentu! is reassuring, while emphatic Tentu saja can sound impatient if the answer was not actually obvious.

A: Boleh saya meminjam payung ini? B: Tentu, silakan.

A: May I borrow this umbrella? B: Of course, go ahead. (willing permission)

Tentu saja keselamatan penumpang harus menjadi pertimbangan utama.

Of course passenger safety must be the main consideration. (strong shared principle)

Tentu, kami akan menghubungi Ibu setelah hasilnya tersedia.

Certainly, we will contact you when the result is available, ma’am. (service reassurance)

A: Kamu ikut merayakan kelulusan Rani, kan? B: Tentu saja!

A: You’re joining the celebration for Rani’s graduation, right? B: Of course! (informal enthusiastic alignment)

Do not use tentu saja to dismiss a genuine learner question.

Pertanyaannya masuk akal. Jawabannya benar, tetapi alasannya perlu kita bahas.

The question makes sense. The answer is correct, but we need to discuss the reason. (supportive classroom response)

Belum tentu challenges an inference

Belum tentu literally contains belum, but as a fixed stance expression it means “not necessarily/not certain.” It does not merely mean an event has not happened yet.

A higher price does not necessarily guarantee better quality.

If the sky is cloudy, it does not necessarily mean it will rain in our area.

Many followers do not necessarily show that the information is trustworthy.

Saya paham kekhawatirannya, tetapi penundaan satu hari belum tentu menyelesaikan masalah.

I understand the concern, but a one-day delay will not necessarily solve the problem.

This is a useful disagreement tool because it targets the strength of an inference rather than saying the other person is simply wrong.

Tidak juga rejects an overstatement softly

Tidak juga often means “not really,” “not exactly,” or “not necessarily” (spoken neutral/informal). It is especially natural as a response: it corrects a description without replacing it with the opposite extreme.

A: Perjalanannya sangat melelahkan, ya? B: Tidak juga; kami sempat beristirahat dua kali.

A: The journey was exhausting, wasn’t it? B: Not really; we stopped to rest twice. (spoken)

A: Jadi, semua orang menolak usulnya? B: Tidak juga. Dua anggota masih mempertimbangkannya.

A: So everyone rejected the proposal? B: Not exactly. Two members are still considering it.

A: Masakannya terlalu pedas untuk anak-anak? B: Tidak juga; mereka masih bisa memakannya.

A: Is the food too spicy for the children? B: Not really; they can still eat it. (spoken qualification)

A: Jadi, kamu keberatan dengan usul itu? B: Tidak juga. Saya hanya ingin waktunya disesuaikan.

A: So you object to the proposal? B: Not exactly. I just want the timing adjusted. (careful spoken qualification)

The construction is sensitive to context and intonation. In formal minutes, spell out the exact position instead of relying on tidak juga.

Partial agreement: align, pivot, explain

A highly portable pattern is:

acknowledge a valid point + tetapi/namun + locate the limitation + give a reason

I agree that costs need to be reduced, but services for older residents must remain available.

It is true that the morning class is quieter. However, not all students have transportation that early.

Saya rasa idenya menarik, hanya saja waktu persiapannya terlalu singkat.

I think the idea is interesting; it’s just that the preparation time is too short.

Pendapat itu masuk akal. Meski begitu, kita masih memerlukan data dari dua kecamatan lain.

That view makes sense. Even so, we still need data from two other districts.

I can accept the first part, but I do not yet agree with the budget change.

Alignment should be genuine. Saya sepenuhnya setuju, tetapi semuanya salah is logically incoherent.

💡
Indonesian disagreement often protects cooperation by narrowing the contrast: accept one proposition, then challenge a consequence, scope, method, or timing.

Friend debate

Ayu: Menurutku, kita naik kereta saja supaya lebih santai.

Ayu: I think we should take the train so it’s more relaxing. (informal friend debate)

Reno: Iya sih, tapi tiket untuk Jumat malam biasanya cepat habis.

Reno: True, but tickets for Friday night usually sell out quickly. (informal partial agreement)

Ayu: Benar juga. Kita cek tiketnya sekarang sebelum memutuskan.

Ayu: Good point. Let’s check the tickets now before deciding. (informal concession)

Reno: Setuju. Kalau masih ada, kita pesan langsung.

Reno: Agreed. If there are still seats, we’ll book immediately. (informal decision)

Iya sih is colloquial and signals “there is truth in that,” not unqualified assent.

Workplace meeting

Mira: Saya mengusulkan agar peluncuran dipindahkan ke hari Senin.

Mira: I propose moving the launch to Monday. (meeting)

Danu: Saya setuju dengan perlunya waktu tambahan, tetapi hari Senin bertepatan dengan hari libur.

Danu: I agree that we need more time, but Monday falls on a holiday. (meeting partial agreement)

Ketua: Benar. Bagaimana kalau kita memilih hari Selasa pagi?

Chair: Correct. How about choosing Tuesday morning? (meeting response)

Mira: Saya rasa hari Selasa lebih realistis. Saya setuju.

Mira: I think Tuesday is more realistic. I agree. (meeting decision)

The sequence makes the record clear: additional time is accepted, Monday is rejected for a stated reason, and Tuesday receives explicit support.

Classroom discussion

Teacher: Do you agree that the main character acted out of fear? (classroom discussion)

Lina: Saya setuju sebagian, Bu. Menurut saya, dia juga ingin melindungi adiknya.

Lina: I partly agree, ma’am. In my view, she also wanted to protect her younger sibling.

Teacher: Correct, more than one reason is supported by the text.

Rafi: Belum tentu dia takut; mungkin dia hanya belum memahami situasinya.

Rafi: She was not necessarily afraid; perhaps she simply did not understand the situation yet.

The student challenges the inference, not the teacher’s worth or authority.

Common Mistakes

1. Leading disagreement with blunt tidak

❌ Tidak. Pendapat Bapak salah seluruhnya.

Needlessly face-threatening—the response rejects the person’s entire contribution before identifying the issue.

✅ Saya memahami kekhawatiran Bapak, tetapi data terbaru menunjukkan pola yang berbeda.

I understand your concern, sir, but the latest data show a different pattern.

2. Using setuju for factual confirmation

❌ Setuju, loketnya tutup pukul 16.00.

Wrong response type when merely confirming an objective schedule.

✅ Betul, loket pelayanan tutup pukul 16.00 tepat.

Correct, the service counter closes at exactly 4 p.m.

3. Treating iya as a binding decision

Incorrect inference—iya can acknowledge attention without voting for the proposal.

The chair asks every member to state clearly whether they agree or disagree.

4. Translating belum tentu as not yet

❌ ‘Harga mahal belum tentu bagus’ berarti barangnya belum menjadi bagus.

Incorrect interpretation—belum tentu challenges the inference from price to quality.

An expensive item is not necessarily more durable than a cheaper option.

5. Claiming complete agreement before rejecting everything

Incoherent stance—complete agreement conflicts with rejecting every part.

✅ Saya setuju dengan tujuannya, tetapi cara pelaksanaannya perlu dirancang ulang.

I agree with the aim, but the implementation needs to be redesigned.
