Agreement is not a single yes/no choice. Indonesian distinguishes accepting a fact (benar), sharing a position (setuju), acknowledging what was heard (iya), and aligning with only one part before challenging another (iya sih, tetapi ...). These choices matter especially when disagreement travels upward in age, status, or institutional authority.
This page focuses on the pragmatic design of responses, not the basic grammar of questions or a complete regional inventory. Colloquial particles appear only inside clearly labeled dialogue.
Four kinds of alignment
| Response | What it accepts | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| benar / betul | the truth or accuracy of a proposition | neutral; betul is very common in speech |
| setuju | a position, judgment, proposal, or plan | neutral |
| iya | acknowledgment, confirmation, or sometimes agreement | neutral spoken |
| iya sih, tetapi ... | one valid aspect, followed by a limitation | informal spoken |
Benar, rapatnya dimulai pukul sembilan.
Correct, the meeting starts at nine. (confirming a fact)
I agree with the proposal to add one staff member.
Iya, saya sudah membaca pesannya.
Yes, I've read the message. (acknowledgment or confirmation)
Iya sih, tempatnya nyaman, tetapi terlalu jauh dari stasiun.
True, the place is comfortable, but it's too far from the station. (informal partial alignment)
Benar validates a proposition; setuju aligns with a position
Use benar or betul when the issue is whether information is accurate. Use setuju when people can reasonably take different positions or decide whether to support a proposal.
That's right, this form must be signed by both parties. (spoken confirmation)
Informasi itu benar, tetapi sumbernya perlu dicantumkan.
That information is correct, but its source needs to be cited.
We agree that passenger safety must be a priority.
I do not yet agree with the new schedule because the preparation time is too short.
English “right” and “I agree” can overlap conversationally. Indonesian speakers may also use betul to align broadly, but learners gain precision by keeping accuracy and support conceptually separate.
Partial alignment protects cooperation
Indonesian disagreement often begins by accepting what is defensible in the other person's turn. The pattern is not evasive: acknowledge + pivot + reason shows that the challenge is limited rather than a rejection of the person.
I agree that costs must be reduced, but staff cuts are not the only option.
Benar, proses lama terlalu lambat. Namun, sistem baru juga belum diuji.
It's true that the old process is too slow. However, the new system has not yet been tested.
Iya sih, menunya murah, tapi pilihannya sedikit banget.
True, the menu is cheap, but there are very few choices. (informal casual discussion)
Masuk akal, tetapi saya masih khawatir soal dampaknya bagi warga sekitar.
That makes sense, but I am still concerned about its impact on nearby residents.
The opening concession must be genuine. Empty praise followed by total rejection can sound manipulative. State exactly what you accept.
Menurut saya and mungkin narrow the challenge
Menurut saya marks a judgment as the speaker's view rather than an uncontested fact. Mungkin can turn an imperative correction into a proposal for consideration. They soften the social claim to authority, not necessarily the content itself.
In my opinion, that conclusion is still too broad for the available data.
Mungkin bagian tentang biaya dapat diperjelas sebelum laporan dikirim.
Perhaps the section on costs could be clarified before the report is sent. (careful spoken)
Saya memahami pertimbangan Bapak.
I understand your reasoning, sir. In my view, there is another risk that also needs to be considered. (upward disagreement)
Perhaps I have understood your point differently, ma'am; do the criteria apply to all participants? (respectful challenge)
Do not hide a firm factual correction behind endless uncertainty. Once evidence is clear, state it respectfully and show the source.
Sebenarnya repairs an assumption
Sebenarnya presents a more accurate or underlying account. It can introduce a gentle correction, but it also implies that the active understanding is incomplete. Use it when there is a real assumption to repair.
Sebenarnya, tenggatnya bukan hari Senin, melainkan hari Rabu.
Actually, the deadline isn't Monday but Wednesday. (factual correction)
Saya setuju dengan tujuannya. Sebenarnya, yang saya pertanyakan hanya cara pelaksanaannya.
I agree with the aim. In fact, the only thing I question is how it will be implemented.
Actually, the data from the third village are already available, but they have not been entered in the table.
For the knowledge responsibility carried by these markers, see stance markers.
Casual discussion
Between friends, direct disagreement is possible, but particles and humor often keep the exchange affiliative (informal).
Ari: Menurutku, kita pesan dua porsi saja biar enggak kebanyakan.
Ari: I think we should order only two portions so we don't get too much. (informal)
Nita: Iya sih, tapi Bimo belum makan dari pagi.
Nita: True, but Bimo hasn't eaten since morning. (informal partial agreement)
Ari: Oh, benar juga. Ya sudah, kita tambah satu porsi.
Ari: Oh, good point. All right, let's add one portion. (informal concession)
Nita: Setuju. Kalau masih kurang, nanti kita pesan lagi.
Nita: Agreed. If it still isn't enough, we can order more later. (informal)
The colloquial spelling enggak and particle sih belong to this dialogue, not neutral exposition.
Workplace meeting
Meetings reward explicit alignment because participants must know whether a proposal has support, needs revision, or has merely been heard.
Rina: Saya usul peluncurannya ditunda satu minggu agar pengujian dapat diselesaikan.
Rina: I propose postponing the launch by one week so testing can be completed. (meeting)
Dedi: I agree on the need for additional testing, but a one-week delay will affect the contract. (meeting partial alignment)
Chair: Correct, there are contractual consequences. Perhaps the legal team can assess the risk today. (meeting)
Rina: All right, I agree that the final decision should be postponed until that assessment is complete. (meeting)
Academic seminar
In an academic seminar (academic), challenge the inference, method, evidence, or scope rather than declaring the presenter personally wrong.
Participant: I agree that this finding is important, but is the sample large enough to support that generalization? (academic seminar)
Pembicara: Benar, ukuran sampel kami terbatas.
Speaker: Correct, our sample is limited. Therefore, this conclusion applies only to the research site. (academic seminar)
Peserta: Menurut saya, penjelasan alternatif tentang perbedaan usia juga perlu dipertimbangkan.
Participant: In my view, the alternative explanation involving age differences also needs to be considered. (academic seminar)
Pembicara: Saya setuju.
Speaker: I agree. In fact, we will discuss the age variable in the follow-up analysis. (academic seminar)
Common Mistakes
1. Leading upward with blunt salah
❌ Bapak salah. Rencana itu tidak masuk akal.
Needlessly face-threatening upward disagreement—it rejects both the person and proposal without identifying the issue.
✅ Saya memahami tujuan rencana Bapak, tetapi menurut saya perkiraan biayanya perlu diperiksa kembali.
I understand the aim of your plan, sir, but in my view the cost estimate needs to be checked again.
2. Using setuju to confirm a clock time
❌ Setuju, keretanya berangkat pukul 06.15.
Wrong alignment type when merely confirming factual information.
✅ Betul, keretanya dijadwalkan berangkat pukul 06.15 dari peron empat.
Correct, the train is scheduled to depart at 6:15 from platform four.
3. Treating iya as guaranteed endorsement
❌ Karena dia menjawab iya sambil mendengarkan, berarti dia menyetujui seluruh usul saya.
Incorrect inference—iya can acknowledge receipt without committing to a position.
✅ Dia sudah mendengar usulnya, tetapi kita masih perlu menanyakan apakah dia setuju.
He has heard the proposal, but we still need to ask whether he agrees.
4. Using sebenarnya without an assumption to repair
❌ Sebenarnya, dua ditambah dua sama dengan empat.
Poor discourse use—no active misconception makes a corrective marker relevant.
✅ Ada yang menulis hasilnya lima. Sebenarnya, dua ditambah dua sama dengan empat.
Someone wrote that the result was five. In fact, two plus two equals four.
5. Offering empty praise before total rejection
Incoherent alignment—sepenuhnya setuju conflicts with rejecting every part.
✅ Saya setuju dengan tujuannya, tetapi rancangan pelaksanaannya perlu disusun ulang.
I agree with the aim, but the implementation plan needs to be redrafted.
