mungkin: Possibility and Epistemic Stance

Mungkin presents a proposition as possible rather than established. It can comment on an entire clause, occur before the predicate, or itself function as the predicate “be possible.” Its most important contrast is one of scope: mungkin tidak means that a negative proposition may be true, whereas tidak mungkin rejects a proposition as impossible.

This page treats epistemic stance—the speaker's confidence about truth—not voice morphology or the dictionary structure of the following verb. Like other modal words, mungkin is written separately from the complete predicate.

Assessing a whole proposition

Sentence-initial mungkin evaluates everything that follows.

Mungkin dia datang setelah makan siang.

Maybe he/she will come after lunch.

Mungkin keretanya terlambat karena hujan deras.

Perhaps the train is delayed because of the heavy rain.

Mungkin saya salah membaca alamatnya.

Perhaps I read the address incorrectly.

Indonesian does not change datang to mark present or future, nor membaca to mark past. The time phrase and context establish the timeline; mungkin only lowers the speaker's commitment to the proposition.

It can also follow the topic or subject:

Dia mungkin datang setelah makan siang.

He/She may come after lunch.

Kereta terakhir mungkin sudah berangkat.

The last train may have already left.

Kunci itu mungkin masih ada di dalam mobil.

That key may still be in the car.

Sentence-initial mungkin often frames the utterance openly as a guess. Subject-following mungkin keeps the subject as the starting point and evaluates its predicate. In many neutral contexts the truth conditions are the same; information structure and intonation determine which sounds more natural.

💡
Do not search for an Indonesian equivalent of English may have, might be, or could have. Keep mungkin unchanged and let sudah, masih, akan, or the time frame locate the possible situation.

Mungkin as the predicate “possible”

Mungkin can itself be a predicate after a subject, or stand alone as an answer.

Perubahan jadwal itu masih mungkin.

That schedule change is still possible.

Apakah perjalanan itu mungkin selesai dalam sehari? Mungkin, tetapi kita harus berangkat pagi-pagi.

Is it possible to finish that trip in one day? Possibly, but we have to leave very early.

Dengan waktu yang tersisa, penyelesaian hari ini hampir tidak mungkin.

With the time remaining, completion today is almost impossible.

The adjective-like use describes a proposal or outcome as possible. English requires is in “the change is possible”; Indonesian needs no copula before mungkin.

Hal itu mungkin saja terjadi lagi.

That could quite possibly happen again.

Here saja makes the speaker entertain the possibility readily. It does not mean that the outcome is certain.

Mungkin akan: possibility over a prospect

The usual order is mungkin akan + predicate. Mungkin evaluates the projected event introduced by akan.

Kami mungkin akan pindah kantor tahun depan.

We may move offices next year.

Hujan mungkin akan turun menjelang sore.

Rain may fall toward late afternoon.

Pemerintah mungkin akan meninjau kembali aturan tersebut.

The government may review that regulation again.

Dia mungkin akan membutuhkan bantuan selama masa pemulihan.

He/She may need help during recovery.

Because Indonesian future reference does not require akan, mungkin datang besok is also complete. Adding akan makes the prospective viewpoint explicit. See akan and projected events.

The central scope contrast: mungkin tidak

In mungkin tidak + predicate, uncertainty has scope over a negative proposition: “perhaps not.”

Dia mungkin tidak datang karena anaknya sakit.

He/She may not come because the child is ill.

Jawabannya mungkin tidak sesederhana itu.

The answer may not be that simple.

Pesanan kita mungkin tidak akan tiba hari ini.

Our order may not arrive today.

Mereka mungkin belum menerima undangannya.

They may not have received the invitation yet.

The speaker leaves both possibilities open. Mungkin belum specifically evaluates a not-yet state, not a categorical refusal or permanent absence.

Tidak mungkin: impossibility

When tidak precedes mungkin, it negates possibility itself.

Dia tidak mungkin datang dalam lima menit; rumahnya terlalu jauh.

He/She cannot possibly arrive in five minutes; the house is too far away.

Tidak mungkin semua barang ini masuk ke dalam satu tas.

It is impossible for all these things to fit into one bag.

Mereka tidak mungkin belum tahu setelah pengumuman sebesar itu.

They cannot possibly still not know after such a major announcement.

A: Kamu menyelesaikannya sendirian dalam sejam? B: Tidak mungkin!

A: You finished it alone in an hour? B: Impossible!

Compare the pair directly:

Rina mungkin tidak hadir besok.

Rina may not attend tomorrow.

Rina tidak mungkin hadir besok karena sedang dirawat di rumah sakit.

Rina cannot possibly attend tomorrow because she is hospitalized.

The first assigns some probability to nonattendance. The second rules attendance out. This is the clearest demonstration that Indonesian word order builds semantic scope.

In speech, neutral phrasing groups tidak mungkin closely when possibility itself is denied; mungkin tidak datang keeps mungkin as the outer assessment of the negative clause. Contrastive stress or a pause can highlight that grouping, but written Indonesian should rely on the unambiguous linear order rather than invented punctuation.

💡
Bracket the meanings as mungkin [tidak hadir] “possibly not attend” versus tidak [mungkin hadir] “not possibly attend.” Linear order makes the hierarchy visible.

Cautious proposals and polite hedging

Speakers use mungkin to present advice or a request as one option rather than impose it directly. This is common in considerate conversation and professional discussion (formal).

Mungkin kita bisa mulai dari masalah yang paling mendesak.

Perhaps we could start with the most urgent problem.

Mungkin sebaiknya Anda beristirahat dulu sebelum melanjutkan perjalanan.

Perhaps you should rest before continuing the journey.

Mungkin Bapak dapat mengirimkan dokumennya sebelum hari Jumat.

Perhaps you could send the document before Friday, sir.

Kalau tidak keberatan, mungkin volumenya bisa dikecilkan sedikit.

If you don't mind, perhaps the volume could be turned down a little.

The grammar does not literally turn an imperative into a question. Instead, mungkin lowers the speaker's certainty or insistence, giving the listener room to respond. Tone still matters: a sharp voice can make even a hedged request sound demanding.

In concise replies, mungkin can also avoid premature commitment:

A: Bisa selesai hari ini? B: Mungkin, kalau datanya segera masuk.

A: Can it be finished today? B: Possibly, if the data comes in soon.

A: Kamu ikut makan malam? B: Mungkin tidak; saya masih harus bekerja.

A: Are you joining dinner? B: Maybe not; I still have to work.

Evidence and responsible strength

Mungkin is appropriate when the evidence supports possibility but not certainty.

Lampunya mati; mungkin mereka sudah tidur.

The light is off; perhaps they have gone to sleep.

Ada bekas air di lantai, jadi pipanya mungkin bocor.

There is a water mark on the floor, so the pipe may be leaking.

Saya belum membaca laporan lengkapnya, tetapi penyebabnya mungkin kekurangan dana.

I have not read the full report, but the cause may be a lack of funding.

Do not replace evidence-based uncertainty with pasti merely to sound confident. Indonesian distinguishes cautious inference from high commitment just as English distinguishes perhaps from certainly.

Common Mistakes

Reversing the intended negative scope

❌ Dia tidak mungkin datang besok.

Wrong for the intended meaning 'maybe he/she will not come' — this says attendance is impossible.

✅ Dia mungkin tidak datang besok karena belum sehat.

He/She may not come tomorrow because he/she is not well yet.

Treating mungkin as a past-tense form

❌ Kemarin Rudi mungkin pulang lebih awal.

Wrong for the intended definite report 'Rudi went home early' — mungkin leaves the event uncertain.

✅ Kemarin Rudi mungkin pulang lebih awal, tetapi saya tidak melihatnya.

Rudi may have gone home early yesterday, but I did not see him.

Adding an English copula before predicative mungkin

❌ Perubahan itu adalah mungkin.

Incorrect — mungkin can serve directly as the predicate 'possible.'

✅ Perubahan itu masih mungkin kalau semua pihak setuju.

That change is still possible if all parties agree.

Using pasti when the evidence only suggests a possibility

❌ Saya belum memeriksa datanya, tetapi hasilnya pasti salah.

Overconfident conclusion — the speaker explicitly lacks the evidence needed for certainty.

✅ Saya belum memeriksa datanya, tetapi hasilnya mungkin salah.

I have not checked the data, but the result may be wrong.

Joining mungkin to the following marker

❌ Mereka mungkinakan terlambat karena jalan ditutup.

Incorrect spelling — mungkin and akan are separate words.

✅ Mereka mungkin akan terlambat karena jalan ditutup.

They may be late because the road is closed.

Key Takeaways

  • Mungkin marks the speaker's proposition as possible, not certain, and never carries tense or agreement.
  • It can evaluate a whole clause, follow a topic, or itself predicate that something is possible.
  • Mungkin tidak means “possibly not”; tidak mungkin means “impossible.”
  • Mungkin akan explicitly combines uncertainty with prospective viewpoint.
  • In proposals and requests, mungkin can reduce insistence without changing the underlying syntax into an imperative.
