Negation does not merely turn a sentence from yes to no. Its position determines what is denied. Tidak harus hadir removes a requirement; harus tidak hadir imposes a requirement to be absent. Mungkin tidak datang allows nonarrival; tidak mungkin datang rules arrival out. A one-word reorder can therefore change necessity, probability, frequency, or completion.
English speakers often trust contractions such as don't have to or mustn't to reveal scope. Indonesian has no matching contraction order. Read outward from the predicate: the element immediately following or containing the negator is usually the first candidate for its scope, but focus and prosody can refine the interpretation.
Five minimally reordered contrasts
| Order A | Paraphrase A | Order B | Paraphrase B |
|---|---|---|---|
| tidak harus hadir | attendance is not required | harus tidak hadir | absence is required |
| mungkin tidak datang | nonarrival is possible | tidak mungkin datang | arrival is impossible |
| tidak selalu benar | not true in every case | selalu tidak benar | false on every occasion |
| belum tentu selesai | completion is not assured yet | tentu belum selesai | of course it is not finished yet |
| bukan Rina yang menelepon | deny the caller's identity | Rina tidak menelepon | deny Rina's calling event |
These pairs contain nearly the same words, but the scope relations differ. Some B orders are limited to contexts that make them natural; that limitation is itself evidence that Indonesian word order encodes structure rather than freely rearranging particles.
Tidak harus versus harus tidak
Tidak harus + predicate means the predicate is not obligatory. It does not prohibit the action. English do not have to maps to this order.
Peserta tidak harus membawa laptop sendiri.
Participants do not have to bring their own laptop.
Anda tidak harus menjawab semua pertanyaan sekaligus.
You do not have to answer every question at once.
We do not have to leave early if the meeting is postponed.
Harus tidak + predicate places negation inside the required state or action. It is clearest in technical specifications and logical contrasts (formal/technical). For ordinary prohibition, tidak boleh or jangan is often more natural.
Variabel keluaran harus tidak bernilai nol.
The output variable must not have a value of zero. (technical)
Kolom ini harus tidak berisi data pribadi.
This field must contain no personal data. (technical)
Pengunjung tidak boleh memasuki ruang tersebut.
Visitors must not enter that room. (formal prohibition)
Thus English must not enter usually becomes tidak boleh masuk, not a mechanical harus tidak masuk. Harus tidak is grammatical when a required negative condition is explicitly at issue.
Mungkin tidak versus tidak mungkin
With mungkin tidak, the negative proposition lies inside possibility: perhaps the event will not happen. With tidak mungkin, negation denies possibility itself: the event cannot happen.
Dewi mungkin tidak ikut perjalanan akhir pekan.
Dewi may not join the weekend trip.
Because the road is flooded, the bus may not arrive on time.
With this amount of ingredients, the cake cannot possibly be enough for fifty people.
Without the password, we cannot possibly open that file.
Compare cautious mungkin tidak berhasil with categorical tidak mungkin berhasil. The first leaves both success and failure open; the second rules success out.
Percobaan pertama mungkin tidak berhasil.
The first trial may not succeed.
Without a power source, that trial cannot succeed.
Belum tentu versus tentu belum
Belum tentu + predicate is a fixed and frequent way to say βnot necessarilyβ or βnot yet certain.β It weakens an inference; it does not simply report incomplete action.
A higher price does not necessarily guarantee better quality.
Cuaca cerah pagi ini belum tentu bertahan sampai sore.
This morning's clear weather will not necessarily last until the afternoon.
Dia sudah mendaftar, tetapi belum tentu diterima.
He/She has registered but will not necessarily be accepted.
Tentu belum + predicate has a different structure: tentu expresses the speaker's confidence that a βnot yetβ state holds. It needs a context where noncompletion is expected.
Baru lima menit dikerjakan; tentu belum selesai.
It has only been worked on for five minutes; of course it is not finished yet.
Anaknya baru berumur enam bulan, jadi tentu belum bisa berjalan.
The child is only six months old, so of course he/she cannot walk yet.
This page does not teach the entire belum paradigm. The point is that moving tentu changes whether uncertainty or not-yet status is being asserted.
Tidak selalu versus selalu tidak
Tidak selalu + predicate denies universal frequency: at least one exception exists, and the wording often suggests that the predicate holds on some other occasions. Selalu tidak + predicate places a negative event within every relevant occasion, often implying persistent failure or absence.
The morning train is not always full on Fridays.
The longest answer is not always the most accurate.
The internet connection in that room is always unstable.
Setiap kali diminta, mesin cadangan selalu tidak menyala.
Whenever needed, the backup machine consistently fails to start.
The second order can be stylistically heavy. Selalu gagal menyala or tidak pernah menyala may be clearer, but they package the frequency differently.
That backup machine never starts when tested.
Aspect and a change of state
The order of aspect-like words and negation can locate a boundary. Sudah tidak + predicate means the predicate used to hold but no longer does. Masih belum + predicate means the expected transition remains unrealized.
Mira sudah tidak tinggal di apartemen lama.
Mira no longer lives in the old apartment.
Nomor telepon itu sudah tidak aktif.
That telephone number is no longer active.
As of this afternoon, the examination result is still not out.
Kami masih belum menerima jawaban dari pemilik gedung.
We still have not received an answer from the building owner.
By contrast, tidak sudah aktif is not the ordinary way to deny prior completion. Indonesian aspect words have ordering restrictions; only the scope-relevant contrasts are treated here.
Quantifier scope: not all versus all not
Tidak semua + noun/predicate means not all: at least one exception exists. Placing semua before a negative can suggest that every member has the negative property, though this order is often pragmatically awkward and benefits from a clearer rewrite.
Not all rooms have a window facing the garden.
Tidak semua peserta sudah mengirim formulir.
Not all participants have submitted the form.
Semua lampu tidak menyala setelah listrik padam.
All the lights were off after the power outage.
Tidak satu pun lampu menyala setelah listrik padam.
Not a single light was on after the power outage.
The last rewrite is clearer for the βnoneβ reading. Tidak semua must not be translated as βnoneβ: it leaves some positive cases open.
Constituent focus with bukan
Plain tidak before a predicate normally denies the event or property. Bukan can instead reject one focused constituent and often pairs with melainkan or tetapi.
Rina tidak menelepon saya tadi malam.
Rina did not call me last night.
Bukan Rina yang menelepon saya tadi malam.
It was not Rina who called me last night.
Rina menelepon bukan tadi malam, melainkan pagi ini.
Rina called not last night but this morning.
Rina menelepon bukan untuk meminta bantuan, tetapi untuk memberi kabar.
Rina called not to ask for help but to give an update.
What I disagree with is the method, not the goal.
The negative may target actor, time, purpose, or another constituent. English stress can do much of this work without changing words; Indonesian writing typically makes the focus explicit with bukan, a cleft-like yang structure, or a corrective pair. See the dedicated bukan guide.
Tidak hanya is additive, not simple denial
The correlative tidak hanya X, tetapi juga Y means not only X but also Y. It normally presupposes or asserts X rather than denying it.
The program is not only inexpensive but also easy to use.
The meeting discussed not only the budget but also workplace safety.
Reading tidak hanya murah in isolation as βnot merely cheapβ may be possible, but the completed correlative is additive. Wait for the continuation before fixing the scope.
Common Mistakes
1. Confusing lack of obligation with prohibition
Participants do not have to enter the room; they may wait outside.
2. Reversing possibility scope
β Kereta mungkin tidak datang berarti kereta mustahil datang.
Incorrect β mungkin tidak leaves both arrival and nonarrival possible.
The train may not come, but we will keep waiting.
3. Reading tidak semua as none
Incorrect β not all permits some complete files.
Not all the files are complete; two of them are still incomplete.
4. Ignoring constituent focus
Incorrect β only the sender's identity is rejected.
β Bukan Dedi yang mengirim pesan, melainkan Sari.
It was not Dedi who sent the message, but Sari.
5. Mapping English mustn't directly to harus tidak
β Pengunjung harus tidak memotret di galeri.
Awkward for an ordinary prohibition β use tidak boleh.
β Pengunjung tidak boleh memotret di galeri.
Visitors must not take photographs in the gallery.
Key Takeaways
- Tidak harus removes necessity; harus tidak requires a negative condition, while ordinary prohibition often uses tidak boleh.
- Mungkin tidak allows nonoccurrence; tidak mungkin makes occurrence impossible.
- Belum tentu means not necessarily, while tentu belum confidently asserts not-yet status.
- Tidak selalu means not on every occasion; selalu tidak puts a negative inside every occasion.
- Written constituent focus should be made explicit with bukan, melainkan, or a yang construction rather than left to imagined English-style stress.
