An abstract must package an entire research argument into a restricted space: object, data, method, result, interpretation, and limitation. Indonesian academic prose often meets that pressure with peN-...-an/per-...-an nouns, dense postnominal modifiers, di- passives, and cautious predicates such as cenderung and mengindikasikan. Compression works only when readers can still recover who did what to which data.
The original abstract below describes a hypothetical sociolinguistic study. It uses formal EYD V spelling and internally consistent terminology; it does not claim that the fictional results are empirical facts. For the larger grammatical systems, see nominalization, academic register, and nominal style.
Complete abstract
The abstract is one paragraph, as many journals require. An individual journal may instead require structured headings such as Latar Belakang, Metode, Hasil, and Simpulan. That is an alternative editorial format, not a correction to the single-paragraph version.
Sentence-by-sentence English translation
This study analyzes the relationship between address-term choice and the formation of participation in multigenerational neighborhood meetings in three urban administrative villages.
Data berupa 36 rekaman rapat dan 18 wawancara tindak lanjut dikumpulkan selama enam bulan, kemudian dianalisis oleh dua peneliti dengan pendekatan analisis percakapan.
Data consisting of 36 meeting recordings and 18 follow-up interviews were collected over six months and then analyzed by two researchers using a conversation-analytic approach.
Based on analysis of opening sequences, topic shifts, and turn allocation, it was found that the use of Bapak, Ibu, and personal names not only marks social relations but also regulates participants' opportunities to take a turn.
Cross-generational comparison shows that shifts from titles to personal names tend to occur after a working agreement has formed, whereas retaining titles is associated with the management of disagreement.
These findings indicate that address-term choice can be understood as an interactional resource for forming participation; however, the limited geographical scope does not yet permit generalization to all neighborhood-meeting contexts.
Numbered grammar and information-structure notes
1. The first sentence builds an object of study, not an English noun stack
The head hubungan comes first. Its two related terms follow antara: pilihan sapaan and pembentukan partisipasi. The setting then follows dalam, and location follows di. Indonesian unfolds the dense concept through heads and relations rather than piling every modifier before one final noun.
The study examines patterns of language use in rural health services. (academic)
The focus of this study is changes in politeness strategies in digital service interactions. (academic)
English urban multigenerational neighborhood meeting participation formation is possible as a technical stack but opaque. Indonesian normally makes attachment visible through pembentukan X dalam Y di Z.
2. Nominalizations package processes as research variables
Penelitian, pembentukan, penggunaan, perbandingan, peralihan, pemertahanan, pengelolaan, and pembagian turn processes into referable entities. A later clause can compare, modify, or make a claim about the whole process.
| Process | Nominalization | Role in the abstract |
|---|---|---|
| meneliti | penelitian | the study as discourse actor |
| membentuk | pembentukan | formation as object of analysis |
| menggunakan | penggunaan | use as an observed pattern |
| membandingkan | perbandingan | comparison as evidence-producing method |
| beralih | peralihan | shift as an event type |
Pengelompokan data dilakukan sebelum penghitungan frekuensi.
The grouping of the data was performed before frequency calculation. (academic)
Pemertahanan istilah lokal menjadi salah satu fokus pengamatan.
The retention of local terms became one focus of observation. (academic)
Nominalization increases density, but it is not automatically superior. If participant relations become unclear, a finite clause may be more precise.
3. Data berupa... defines the empirical material compactly
Data berupa 36 rekaman... means “data in the form of...” The numeral phrases specify the dataset, while wawancara tindak lanjut places the purpose modifier after wawancara.
Korpus berupa 120 pesan layanan pelanggan dianonimkan sebelum dianalisis.
A corpus consisting of 120 customer-service messages was anonymized before analysis.
Bukti pendukung berupa catatan lapangan disimpan secara terpisah.
Supporting evidence in the form of field notes was stored separately.
This pattern is valuable because berupa states the relation between an abstract category and its concrete contents without a long relative clause.
4. Passive voice orders method around data while retaining an agent
Dikumpulkan and dianalisis keep data as the continuous topic. The second passive explicitly retains oleh dua peneliti. Indonesian passive voice therefore does not inherently conceal agency; it changes which participant anchors the clause.
Seluruh transkrip diperiksa kembali oleh peneliti kedua.
All transcripts were checked again by the second researcher.
Nama peserta disamarkan untuk melindungi kerahasiaan data.
Participants' names were anonymized to protect data confidentiality.
The first example names the agent because independent checking matters. The second omits it because the ethical purpose and affected names are more relevant here.
5. Berdasarkan frames the evidential basis
Berdasarkan analisis terhadap X, ditemukan bahwa Y places the analytic basis before the result. Berdasarkan must attach to something that is genuinely the basis; it should not be blended with a second finite predicate whose subject is unclear.
Based on the coding results, two main patterns can be identified.
The conclusion was formulated on the basis of evidence that appeared consistently in the data.
6. Bahwa complements package propositions as claims
Ditemukan bahwa..., menunjukkan bahwa..., and mengindikasikan bahwa... introduce complete propositions. The matrix predicate grades the epistemic force: ditemukan reports an analytic outcome; menunjukkan presents evidence as supporting; mengindikasikan is more cautious.
Preliminary results show that the pattern is not evenly distributed.
Analisis lanjutan mengindikasikan bahwa usia bukan satu-satunya faktor.
Further analysis indicates that age is not the only factor.
English may omit that. Formal Indonesian commonly retains bahwa when the complement is long or when the boundary between claim and evidence needs to remain visible.
7. Cautious modality prevents the abstract from outrunning its data
Cenderung terjadi reports a tendency rather than an exceptionless rule. Dapat dipahami offers an analysis, not the only possible interpretation. Belum memungkinkan generalisasi limits the domain of the claim.
The difference may be related to participants' organizational experience.
These findings cannot yet be applied to interactions outside neighborhood meetings.
Caution is not decorative modesty. Each marker identifies a genuine inferential boundary: probability, analytical framing, or scope.
8. Antargenerasi is written as one word
Bound antar- attaches to a common-noun base: antargenerasi, antarkelompok, antarwilayah. It is separated before a multiword proper name, but that case does not arise in this abstract.
Variasi antarkelompok diuji dengan membandingkan distribusi setiap kategori.
Variation between groups was tested by comparing the distribution of each category.
Kerja sama antaruniversitas memerlukan kesepakatan tertulis.
Interuniversity cooperation requires a written agreement.

A natural translation preserving academic density
This study examines the relationship between address-term choice and participation formation in multigenerational neighborhood meetings in three urban administrative villages. The dataset comprises 36 meeting recordings and 18 follow-up interviews collected over six months and analyzed by two researchers using conversation analysis. Analysis of opening sequences, topic shifts, and turn allocation found that Bapak, Ibu, and personal names not only mark social relations but also shape participants' opportunities to take the floor. Cross-generational comparison suggests that speakers tend to shift from titles to personal names after establishing a working agreement, whereas title retention is associated with disagreement management. Address-term choice may therefore function as an interactional resource for participation formation. The limited number of sites, however, does not yet support generalization to all neighborhood-meeting contexts.
The translation divides the final Indonesian sentence for readability but preserves the claim's cautious force and the method-agent relation.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English prenominal noun stack
Incorrect Indonesian attachment—the head and its relations cannot be recovered from this English-style stack.
This study examines patterns of address-term choice in urban neighborhood meetings.
2. Blending berdasarkan with an unanchored predicate
❌ Berdasarkan hasil wawancara menunjukkan adanya tiga pola.
Incorrect—the berdasarkan phrase has no clear host while menunjukkan lacks a subject.
Based on the interview results, this study demonstrates the presence of three patterns.
3. Dropping the causative suffix from the data passive
❌ Seluruh rekaman dikumpul selama dua tahap penelitian.
Incorrect in Standard Indonesian—the transitive passive is dikumpulkan.
✅ Seluruh rekaman dikumpulkan selama dua tahap penelitian.
All recordings were collected during two stages of the study.
4. Using di mana as a general relative connector
Incorrect—di mana asks or marks location; the propositional complement takes bahwa.
The analysis found that younger participants use personal names more often.
5. Separating bound antar-
❌ Perbedaan antar generasi dianalisis pada tahap kedua.
Incorrect EYD V spelling with a common-noun base—antar- attaches to generasi.
✅ Perbedaan antargenerasi dianalisis pada tahap kedua.
Cross-generational differences were analyzed in the second stage.
6. Turning cautious evidence into universal proof
Incorrect inference—the dataset cannot support an unrestricted national claim.
Data from three locations indicate a pattern that needs to be tested in other contexts.
Key Takeaways
- Indonesian academic density develops through head-first noun phrases and explicit participant relations, not English-style prenominal stacks.
- Nominalizations make processes comparable and referable, but excessive compression can obscure agency.
- Passive voice keeps data prominent and may either omit or retain an agent with oleh.
- Berdasarkan frames evidence; bahwa marks the proposition supported by that evidence.
- Cautious modality states the real limits of tendency, interpretation, and generalizability.
