bahwa: Propositional Content

Bahwa introduces a propositionβ€”the content of what someone says, thinks, knows, discovers, or treats as a fact. In mereka mengatakan bahwa jadwal berubah, the words after bahwa are not merely another action; they are the statement being reported.

English often translates bahwa as that, but English that also works as a demonstrative and relative marker. Indonesian bahwa has the narrower job of packaging propositional content. The structural details are expanded in content clauses with bahwa.

The basic content pattern

The common pattern is:

matrix expression + bahwa + proposition

Sekretaris mengatakan bahwa rapat dipindahkan ke hari Kamis.

The secretary said that the meeting had been moved to Thursday.

We are sure that the address on the form is correct.

Tono realized that his wallet had been left in the taxi.

The proposition has its own internal subject and predicate: rapat dipindahkan, alamat...sudah benar, dompetnya tertinggal. Bahwa does not conjugate the embedded verb or mark its time. Aspect markers and context do that work.

The doctor explained that the examination results would be available tomorrow morning.

Saya tahu bahwa pintu belakang sudah dikunci.

I know that the back door has been locked.

πŸ’‘
Imagine bahwa as an opening bracket labeled β€œcontent.” The following clause answers β€œwhat was said, thought, known, or established?”

Speech and report content

Reporting predicates frequently take bahwa, especially in news, minutes, formal correspondence, and careful explanations (formal; journalistic).

Juru bicara mengumumkan bahwa penerbangan tambahan mulai beroperasi pekan depan.

The spokesperson announced that additional flights would begin operating next week. (formal)

The manager emphasized that there would be no additional charge for existing customers. (formal)

Laporan audit menyebutkan bahwa tiga pembayaran belum memiliki bukti lengkap.

The audit report states that three payments do not yet have complete documentation. (formal)

The witness admitted that they did not see the vehicle leave the site. (formal)

The reporting source may be a person, document, or institution. The bahwa clause presents what that source asserts; it does not guarantee the assertion is true.

Everyday bilang can also introduce content, usually without bahwa in relaxed speech.

Rani bilang keretanya terlambat hampir satu jam.

Rani said her train was almost an hour late. (informal)

Rani mengatakan bahwa keretanya terlambat hampir satu jam.

Rani said that her train was almost an hour late. (neutral-formal)

The second version gives the content a clearer boundary and matches careful prose.

Thought and knowledge

Predicates such as tahu, percaya, mengira, menyangka, sadar, and menemukan can take a proposition.

I believe that they have considered all the risks.

Dina thought that the pharmacy was open all night.

Kami baru sadar bahwa satu lampiran belum terkirim.

We just realized that one attachment had not been sent.

The researchers found that surface temperature was rising faster in the city center. (academic)

In conversation, the required compact pattern tahu dia datang is entirely natural when the clause boundary is clear:

Aku tahu dia datang tadi malam karena sepatunya ada di depan.

I know he or she came last night because the shoes are out front. (informal)

No Indonesian infinitive is involved. Dia datang remains a proposition with subject dia, even though bahwa is absent.

Optionality: when bahwa can disappear

After familiar short predicates, speakers often omit bahwa:

Saya kira bus terakhir sudah berangkat.

I think the last bus has already left.

Mereka yakin hasilnya keluar sore ini.

They are sure the result will be released this afternoon.

Kami dengar jalan menuju pantai masih ditutup.

We heard the road to the beach is still closed. (conversational)

Omission is favored in conversation when the matrix predicate and embedded subject make the boundary obvious. Explicit bahwa helps when the content is long, formally framed, or nested.

The director confirmed that every branch affected by the disruption would receive replacement equipment before the end of the month. (formal)

The article argues that policies designed without public consultation tend to be difficult to implement consistently. (academic)

Omitting bahwa from those sentences would not necessarily make them ungrammatical, but readers would have to discover the embedded boundary while processing a dense clause.

The embedded proposition may also have a clearly different subject:

Maya mengakui bahwa Fadil telah menyelesaikan sebagian besar pekerjaan itu.

Maya acknowledged that Fadil had completed most of the work.

Maya acknowledged that she herself had not read the final result.

In the second, dia sendiri makes same-person reference explicit. Without context, dia could still refer to another salient person; Indonesian pronouns do not mechanically bind back to the matrix subject.

πŸ’‘
Use explicit bahwa as a processing boundary, not as a decoration of formal language. The longer or more deeply embedded the proposition, the more useful the boundary becomes.

Fact and claim nouns

The required pattern fakta bahwa... makes a whole proposition specify the content of a noun.

The fact that the warehouse had no emergency exit surprised the inspection team.

The fact that rents keep rising affects small businesses in the area.

The news that the bridge would reopen was welcomed by residents.

The allegation that the data had been altered still has to be proven. (formal)

Evidence that the payment was received is stored in the electronic archive. (formal)

The bahwa clause specifies what the fact, news, allegation, or evidence is about. Do not place a comma between the noun and this restrictive content clause.

Dense noun-plus-content structures are common in academic and bureaucratic prose:

Kesimpulan bahwa intervensi tersebut tidak menghasilkan perubahan berarti perlu ditafsirkan dengan hati-hati.

The conclusion that the intervention produced no meaningful change must be interpreted cautiously. (academic)

A writer can sometimes improve end weight by using a predicate-first version:

Telah terbukti bahwa metode lama menghasilkan terlalu banyak kesalahan pengukuran.

It has been proven that the old method produces too many measurement errors. (academic)

Direct speech is a different structure

A direct quotation reproduces a speaker's words and takes quotation punctuation, not bahwa.

Bima berkata, "Saya akan kembali sebelum pukul delapan."

Bima said, β€œI will return before eight.”

An indirect report packages a proposition and adjusts reference to the reporter's viewpoint.

Bima said that he would return before eight.

Putting bahwa directly before quotation marks mixes these two constructions.

Bahwa is not every English that

English that has at least three relevant functions:

FunctionIndonesianIllustration

That bag belongs to the officer who helped us earlier.

Neither itu nor yang packages a proposition as the content of a matrix expression, so replacing them with bahwa would be wrong.

Common Mistakes

Putting bahwa before a direct quotation

❌ Sari berkata bahwa, "Saya tidak membawa kuncinya."

Incorrect β€” bahwa does not introduce directly quoted words.

βœ… Sari berkata, "Saya tidak membawa kunci gudang."

Sari said, β€œI didn't bring the storeroom key.”

Translating relative that as bahwa

❌ Film bahwa kami tonton semalam terlalu panjang.

Incorrect β€” a relative modifier requires yang.

βœ… Film yang kami tonton semalam terlalu panjang.

The film that we watched last night was too long.

Translating demonstrative that as bahwa

❌ Saya ingin membeli payung bahwa.

Incorrect β€” the demonstrative follows the noun as itu.

I want to buy that umbrella for tomorrow's trip.

Omitting a contrasting embedded subject

Wrong for the intended reading that the staff will close the gate β€” without an overt contrast, the omitted actor is naturally recovered as the principal.

The principal explained that the staff would close the gate earlier.

Adding a comma before a noun's content clause

❌ Kami menerima kabar, bahwa kapal tertunda.

Incorrect punctuation β€” the bahwa clause specifies the content of kabar.

βœ… Kami menerima kabar bahwa kapal pengangkut tertunda sampai besok.

We received news that the cargo vessel had been delayed until tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • Bahwa packages a proposition as the content of speech, thought, knowledge, discovery, or a fact-denoting noun.
  • Common short predicates can omit it when the embedded boundary is obvious.
  • Formal density, long propositions, and nested reports favor an explicit bahwa.
  • Direct quotation uses quotation punctuation, not bahwa.
  • English that may instead require Indonesian itu or yang; translate the grammatical function.
