-nya Clauses and Fact Nominalization

Attached -nya can turn a predicate into something that a larger clause can discuss: an arrival, a failure to attend, the size of a house, or the striking beauty of a view. This is fact nominalization. The predicate no longer only asserts an event or property; it packages that event, fact, or measured degree as a discourse entity.

The same spelling -nya also marks third-person possession or a salient referent. Interpretation begins with the host: bukunya attaches to a noun, while datangnya and besarnya attach to predicates.

Review the wider -nya system for its object, possessive, definite, and stance uses.

From event predicate to event entity

Compare a clause with a nominalized event:

Rombongan tamu datang setelah makan siang.

The group of guests arrived after lunch.

Datangnya rombongan tamu setelah makan siang membuat jadwal berubah.

The guests' arrival after lunch caused the schedule to change.

In the first sentence, datang predicates an event. In the second, datangnya rombongan tamu... is a noun-like constituent functioning as subject of membuat.

The brief's compact pattern datangnya terlambat can describe someone's arrival as late:

Datangnya terlambat sehingga kami memulai rapat tanpa dia.

He or she arrived late, so we began the meeting without them.

This form is structurally compact and context-dependent: -nya both packages the coming as an event and can anchor the person who came. A more explicit version names that participant.

Datangnya Rudi terlambat hampir satu jam.

Rudi's arrival was almost an hour late.

Terlambatnya kedatangan Rudi membuat peserta gelisah.

The lateness of Rudi's arrival made the participants uneasy.

💡
Predicate + -nya creates a fact or event that can become subject, object, or complement of another predicate. It is not a tense ending.

Verbal fact nominalizations

Many verbal predicates can take -nya when the surrounding discourse treats their event as known, consequential, or measurable.

Berangkatnya kereta terakhir lebih awal mengejutkan para penumpang.

The last train's early departure surprised the passengers.

Pindahnya kantor pusat ke Surabaya diumumkan bulan lalu.

The head office's move to Surabaya was announced last month.

Meningkatnya harga beras memengaruhi pengeluaran rumah tangga.

The rise in rice prices affects household spending.

Tidak hadirnya kepala bagian menunda penandatanganan dokumen.

The division head's absence delayed the signing of the document.

Berhasilnya tim kecil itu menarik perhatian media.

The small team's success attracted media attention.

The negative marker in tidak hadirnya belongs inside the nominalized fact. The event participant can follow the nominalized predicate: berangkatnya kereta, pindahnya kantor, berhasilnya tim.

Voice morphology remains attached before -nya:

Ditutupnya jalan utama menyebabkan antrean panjang di pusat kota.

The closure of the main road caused long queues downtown.

Dibatalkannya dua penerbangan membuat hotel di sekitar bandara penuh.

The cancellation of two flights filled hotels around the airport.

Ditemukannya dokumen asli mengubah arah penyelidikan.

The discovery of the original document changed the direction of the investigation. (formal)

Forms such as ditutupnya are dense and characteristic of formal written Indonesian. Conversation often chooses an ordinary noun or a karena clause instead.

Karena jalan utama ditutup, terjadi antrean panjang di pusat kota.

Because the main road was closed, long queues formed downtown. (neutral)

Adjective + -nya as a measured degree

With an adjective, -nya can package “how X” or “the degree/extent of X.” The required phrase besarnya rumah means the size or striking largeness of the house, not “his big house.”

Besarnya rumah tua itu membuat biaya perawatannya sangat tinggi.

The size of that old house makes its maintenance cost very high.

Kami terkejut melihat tingginya harga kamar pada musim liburan.

We were surprised by how high room prices were during the holiday season.

Cepatnya perubahan teknologi menyulitkan sebagian usaha kecil.

The speed of technological change creates difficulties for some small businesses.

Lebarnya sungai di bagian hilir mencapai hampir satu kilometer.

The river's width downstream reaches almost one kilometer.

Sulitnya akses ke desa itu menghambat pengiriman obat.

The difficulty of access to that village hinders medicine deliveries.

These expressions can denote an objective measure (lebarnya mencapai...) or an evaluated degree (terkejut melihat tingginya...). English often uses a noun such as size, height, or difficulty, or an embedded how clause.

The participant whose property is measured normally follows the nominalized adjective: besarnya rumah, tingginya harga, sulitnya akses.

Exclamatory evaluation

Adjective + -nya can also form an exclamation that presents a degree as immediately striking.

The required indahnya pemandangan is a classic pattern:

Indahnya pemandangan dari puncak ini!

How beautiful the view from this summit is!

Cepatnya waktu berlalu ketika kita sedang bahagia!

How quickly time passes when we are happy!

Ramainya pasar ini menjelang hari raya!

How crowded this market is before the holiday!

Dingin sekali udaranya malam ini!

How cold the air is tonight!

The last example is different: udaranya is a noun plus definite/possessive -nya, while dingin sekali is the predicate. Surface position and host category distinguish it from dinginnya udara “how cold the air is.”

Dinginnya udara pegunungan membuat tangan saya mati rasa.

The coldness of the mountain air made my hands numb.

Fact, cause, and evaluation in larger clauses

A nominalized fact can occupy positions normally filled by noun phrases.

Kami membicarakan mundurnya ketua panitia dari jabatannya.

We discussed the committee chair's resignation from the position.

Semua orang menyesalkan gagalnya perundingan tersebut.

Everyone regretted the failure of those negotiations.

Dengan dibukanya jalur baru, waktu perjalanan menjadi lebih singkat.

With the opening of the new route, travel time became shorter. (formal)

Akibat naiknya permukaan air, warga diminta meninggalkan rumah.

Because of the rising water level, residents were asked to leave their homes. (formal)

Prepositions such as dengan and relational nouns such as akibat can take the nominalized fact as complement. This density is useful in academic, legal, and journalistic prose but can become heavy when several nominalizations stack.

Dibukanya kembali sekolah disambut gembira oleh para orang tua.

The reopening of schools was welcomed by parents.

Compare a finite alternative:

Para orang tua gembira karena sekolah dibuka kembali.

Parents were happy because schools reopened. (neutral)

The nominalized version treats the reopening as a topic-like fact; the finite version directly relates cause and reaction.

Contrast with bahwa fact clauses

Bahwa introduces propositional content, while predicate + -nya packages a more compact event or degree.

Fakta bahwa jadwal itu diubah baru diketahui pagi ini.

The fact that the schedule was changed became known only this morning.

Diubahnya jadwal itu baru diketahui pagi ini.

The change to that schedule became known only this morning. (formal, compact)

Kami menyadari bahwa biaya perawatan sangat tinggi.

We realized that the maintenance cost was very high.

Kami menyadari tingginya biaya perawatan gedung tersebut.

We became aware of the high maintenance cost of that building.

The bahwa versions assert fuller propositions. The -nya versions make the change or degree available as a nominal object. They overlap, but one is not a mechanical replacement for the other.

Possessive and definite ambiguity

After a noun, -nya commonly marks possession or a salient referent:

Rumahnya besar dan memiliki halaman belakang.

His/Her/The house is large and has a backyard.

Here the host rumah is a noun. The clause asserts besar. Compare:

Besarnya rumah itu terlihat jelas dari jalan.

The size of that house is obvious from the road.

Now -nya attaches to adjective besar, creating the degree expression besarnya. Word order changes the structure.

With verbal hosts, the line between nominalizer and participant anchor can be genuinely blurred. Datangnya may mean “his/her coming” while simultaneously packaging that coming as an event. Do not force every token into only one English category.

💡
Identify the host before translating -nya: noun + -nya often anchors a possessor or definite referent; predicate + -nya often creates an event, fact, or degree.

Orthography and register

Attach -nya: datangnya, besarnya, ditutupnya, indahnya. All preceding derivational and voice morphology remains inside the same word. Standard Indonesian uses no accent mark on these forms.

Dense di-verb-nya nominalizations are (formal). Simple degree expressions and exclamations occur across registers, while highly stacked nominalizations are best edited into finite clauses for clarity.

Common Mistakes

Spacing the clitic

❌ Datang nya para tamu membuat ruangan ramai.

Incorrect spelling — -nya attaches directly to datang.

✅ Datangnya para tamu membuat ruangan ramai.

The arrival of the guests made the room lively.

Reading every -nya as possession

❌ Ungkapan “tingginya harga” selalu berarti harga milik seseorang.

Incorrect interpretation — tingginya harga nominalizes the degree ‘how high the price is.’

✅ Tingginya harga bahan bakar memengaruhi biaya angkutan.

High fuel prices affect transport costs.

Confusing a big house with the size of a house

❌ Ungkapan “rumah besarnya” dipakai untuk menyatakan ukuran rumah itu.

Incorrect structure for ‘the size of the house’ — rumah besarnya means his/her/the big house in context.

✅ Besarnya rumah itu mengejutkan kami.

The size of that house surprised us.

Splitting voice morphology from -nya

❌ Di tutup nya jembatan itu menghambat perjalanan.

Incorrect spelling — ditutupnya is one word.

✅ Ditutupnya jembatan itu menghambat perjalanan warga.

The closure of that bridge disrupted residents' travel. (formal)

Using a nominalized fragment as a finite assertion

❌ Saya besarnya rumah itu sejak tahun lalu.

Incorrect — besarnya rumah is a noun-like degree expression, not a finite predicate selected by saya.

✅ Saya sudah mengetahui besarnya rumah itu sejak tahun lalu.

I have known the size of that house since last year.

Key Takeaways

  • Predicate + attached -nya turns an event, fact, or degree into a discourse entity.
  • Verbal forms such as datangnya and ditutupnya can function as larger-clause subjects or complements.
  • Adjective forms such as besarnya and tingginya express measured or evaluated degree.
  • Exclamatory indahnya pemandangan! presents a striking quality, not possession.
  • Noun-hosted possession and predicate-hosted nominalization can overlap; identify the host and syntax before translating.
