Indonesian money language shifts with the situation. A bank transfer demands an exact written amount such as Rp1.275.000,00; a market seller may say simply dua puluh lima when both parties know the unit is thousands of rupiah. The number has not changed—only the amount of context that speaker and listener trust.
This page develops price grammar rather than inventories of classifiers or general reduplication theory. The official written conventions follow EYD V's number guidance; the wider spelling system appears on the numbers and units page.
The shape of an exact rupiah amount
Write Rp directly before the digits: no period after the symbol and no intervening space. Indonesian uses a point to group thousands and a comma before the decimal part.
| Written amount | Full reading | Ordinary contextual reading |
|---|---|---|
| Rp8.000 | delapan ribu rupiah | delapan ribu |
| Rp42.500 | empat puluh dua ribu lima ratus rupiah | empat puluh dua ribu lima ratus |
| Rp3.250.000 | tiga juta dua ratus lima puluh ribu rupiah | tiga juta dua ratus lima puluh ribu |
| Rp900.500,50 | sembilan ratus ribu lima ratus rupiah lima puluh sen | exact financial reading |
Biaya cetaknya tepat Rp42.500,00.
The printing fee is exactly 42,500 rupiah.
Saldo awal rekening itu Rp3.250.000,00.
The opening balance of that account is 3,250,000 rupiah.
Sen is the fractional unit: legally, one rupiah consists of one hundred sen. Sen rarely affects an ordinary cash purchase now, but it remains relevant in accounting and exact calculations. The comma in Rp900.500,50 therefore does not introduce thousands. English reverses the two separators, which makes transfer errors particularly dangerous.
Ribu and juta organize spoken prices
Ribu means “thousand,” and juta means “million.” They are ordinary scale words, not plural currency forms. The number before them supplies the multiplier.
Harga tiket bus malam itu seratus delapan puluh ribu rupiah.
That night-bus ticket costs 180,000 rupiah.
Laptop bekas ini ditawarkan seharga enam juta dua ratus ribu rupiah.
This used laptop is offered for 6,200,000 rupiah.
Uang muka sewanya satu juta lima ratus ribu.
The advance payment for the rental is 1,500,000 rupiah.
In an established rupiah conversation, final rupiah is normally recoverable and may be omitted. Dua ratus ribu still states the full scale; it is neither a different numeral nor an abbreviation in spelling.
The attached forms seribu and sejuta mean “one thousand” and “one million.” Do not separate the prefix se-.
Saya hanya membawa uang tunai seratus ribu, bukan sejuta.
I only brought 100,000 rupiah in cash, not one million.
Harga termos itu turun dari sejuta menjadi delapan ratus lima puluh ribu.
That thermos dropped in price from one million to 850,000 rupiah.
When casual speech omits ribu
At a market, food stall, parking area, or among people discussing familiar small prices, ribu may be predictable enough to disappear (informal). A seller who answers dua puluh lima may mean dua puluh lima ribu rupiah, not twenty-five rupiah.
Pembeli: Mangga sekilo berapa? Penjual: Dua puluh lima.
Buyer: How much is a kilogram of mangoes? Seller: Twenty-five thousand. (informal market exchange)
Teman saya bilang ongkos parkirnya cuma lima.
My friend said the parking fee was only five thousand. (informal, context-bound)
Kasir: Totalnya tiga puluh delapan, ya. Pelanggan: Baik, saya bayar pakai QR.
Cashier: The total is thirty-eight thousand, okay. Customer: All right, I'll pay by QR. (informal café exchange)
This ellipsis is a pragmatic shortcut, not a rule that dua puluh lima always equals 25,000. With no shared scale—especially in a transfer, invoice, contract, or conversation involving foreign currency—say dua puluh lima ribu rupiah or write Rp25.000. Written Rp25 means twenty-five rupiah; readers do not silently supply three zeros.
Market and café prices
Price questions commonly use berapa, while answers can use harganya, totalnya, or a bare amount. Sekilo means “per/for one kilogram” in everyday trade; the general written construction is per kilogram.
Berapa harga cabai merah per kilogram hari ini?
How much are red chilies per kilogram today?
Cabai merahnya Rp64.000 per kilogram, tetapi boleh beli setengah kilo.
The red chilies are 64,000 rupiah per kilogram, but you can buy half a kilogram.
Kopi susunya delapan belas ribu, sudah termasuk pajak.
The milk coffee is 18,000 rupiah, including tax.
Dua porsi nasi ayam dan satu es teh totalnya Rp71.000.
Two portions of chicken rice and one iced tea come to 71,000 rupiah.
Per links a rate to its unit: per porsi, per kilogram, per malam, per bulan. In casual sales talk, seporsi, sekilo, semalam, and sebulan are also natural. These se- forms are written solid.
Kamar sederhana itu disewakan seharga Rp275.000 semalam.
That simple room rents for 275,000 rupiah per night.
Harga makan siangnya empat puluh ribu per orang.
Lunch costs 40,000 rupiah per person.
The choice between Rp64.000 per kilogram and enam puluh empat ribu sekilo is largely one of channel and register: the first suits a sign or careful quotation (neutral/formal); the second is ordinary market speech (informal).
Rent, deposits, and recurring charges
A rental quote should distinguish sewa “rent,” uang muka “advance payment/down payment,” jaminan “security deposit,” and what is included. Use per bulan or sebulan for the recurring period.
Sewa kamar itu Rp1.850.000 per bulan, belum termasuk listrik.
That room rents for 1,850,000 rupiah per month, excluding electricity.
Pemilik meminta uang jaminan sebesar dua juta rupiah.
The owner asks for a security deposit of two million rupiah.
Kalau membayar setahun di muka, penyewa mendapat potongan satu bulan.
If the tenant pays a year in advance, they receive a one-month discount.
In careful financial prose, sebesar introduces an amount without suggesting physical size. It is common in agreements, official notices, and bank messages (formal).
Transfers require the full amount
Bank transfers and invoices remove the market's permission to guess. Repeat or display all digits, include the recipient, and confirm whether an administrative fee is added.
Mohon transfer tepat Rp1.275.000 ke rekening yang tercantum pada tagihan.
Please transfer exactly 1,275,000 rupiah to the account shown on the invoice.
Saya menerima Rp485.000 setelah dipotong biaya administrasi.
I received 485,000 rupiah after the administration fee was deducted.
Bukti transfer menunjukkan nominal Rp2.040.000,00.
The transfer receipt shows an amount of 2,040,000 rupiah.
Nominal (formal/financial) means the stated monetary amount, not “nominal” in the English sense of trivial or merely symbolic.
Discounts and final prices
Diskon and potongan both reduce a price. A percentage describes the rate; harga setelah diskon or harga akhirnya identifies what the customer actually pays.
Harga awal tas itu Rp300.000. Setelah diskon 20%, harganya turun menjadi Rp240.000.
The bag's original price is 300,000 rupiah. After a 20% discount, its price falls to 240,000 rupiah.
Ada potongan Rp35.000 untuk pembayaran melalui aplikasi.
There is a 35,000-rupiah discount for payment through the app.
Harga normalnya empat ratus ribu, sedangkan harga promosinya tiga ratus dua puluh ribu.
Its regular price is 400,000 rupiah, while its promotional price is 320,000.
Do not mistake 20% for the final price. Ask Jadi, setelah diskon berapa? when the base price or stacked conditions are unclear.
Change, exact payment, and rounding
Kembalian is the money returned after payment. Uang pas is the exact amount, and pas can also describe exactness more generally.
Saya membayar Rp100.000 untuk belanjaan seharga Rp73.000.
I paid 100,000 rupiah for shopping that cost 73,000.
Kembaliannya dua puluh tujuh ribu rupiah.
The change is 27,000 rupiah.
Maaf, ada uang pas? Kasir belum punya kembalian.
Sorry, do you have the exact amount? The cashier doesn't have change yet.
Total akhirnya dibulatkan menjadi Rp56.500.
The final total was rounded to 56,500 rupiah.
Rounding must be stated rather than assumed. Dibulatkan menjadi names the rounded result; dibulatkan ke atas/ke bawah specifies the direction.
Common Mistakes
1. Reading a thousands point as a decimal point
❌ Harga di label itu dibaca dua puluh lima koma lima rupiah: Rp25.500.
Incorrect—the point groups thousands, so the amount is 25,500 rupiah.
✅ Harga di label itu dibaca dua puluh lima ribu lima ratus rupiah.
The price on that label is read as twenty-five thousand five hundred rupiah.
2. Adding English-style punctuation after Rp
❌ Biaya masuknya Rp. 50,000.
Incorrect Indonesian notation—Rp takes no period, and the thousands separator is a point.
✅ Biaya masuknya Rp50.000.
The admission fee is 50,000 rupiah.
3. Treating casual ellipsis as written shorthand
❌ Pada kuitansi, Rp75 dimaksudkan sebagai tujuh puluh lima ribu rupiah.
Incorrect—an exact document cannot silently add ribu to Rp75.
✅ Pada kuitansi, tujuh puluh lima ribu rupiah ditulis Rp75.000.
On a receipt, seventy-five thousand rupiah is written Rp75.000.
4. Giving rupiah an English plural ending
❌ Harga bukunya enam puluh ribu rupiahs.
Incorrect—rupiah does not take an English plural ending.
✅ Harga bukunya enam puluh ribu rupiah.
The book costs 60,000 rupiah.
5. Separating attached se- forms
❌ Biaya sewanya satu juta per satu bulan.
Awkward for the intended recurring rate—use per bulan or the solid form sebulan.
✅ Biaya sewanya satu juta rupiah sebulan.
The rent is one million rupiah per month.
Key Takeaways
- Write Rp42.500,00: the symbol touches the number, points group thousands, and the comma introduces sen.
- Use ribu and juta as scale words; the currency noun rupiah does not pluralize.
- Casual dua puluh lima may mean 25,000 only when the shared setting supplies ribu.
- Use per or attached se- forms for rates: per bulan, sebulan, per porsi, seporsi.
- State the exact amount in transfers and invoices, and distinguish a discount rate from the final price and change.
