Indonesian uses overlapping vocabulary for clocks, clock time, and duration, but the constructions are not interchangeable. Pukul 08.30 identifies a point in the day; dua jam measures a duration; conversational jam setengah sembilan packages 08.30 relative to the coming hour. Dates then add a day–month–year order and, across Indonesia, a named time zone.
Jam Versus pukul
Pukul introduces a clock reading, especially in careful speech, appointments, timetables, news, and official notices. Jam can name a clock/watch, measure an hour, or introduce a time conversationally.
| Function | Natural form | Register |
|---|---|---|
| precise clock point | pukul 08.30 | neutral/formal |
| conversational clock point | jam setengah sembilan | informal/neutral spoken |
| duration | dua jam | all registers |
| timepiece | jam tangan | all registers |
Rapat dimulai pukul 09.00 dan berakhir pukul 11.00.
The meeting starts at 9:00 and ends at 11:00.
Rapat itu berlangsung selama dua jam tanpa jeda.
That meeting lasts for two hours without a break.
Jam tangan saya terlambat lima menit.
My watch is five minutes slow.
The first example has two clock points. The second measures the interval between them. Pukul does not replace jam as the duration unit.
Full Hours and Institutional Notation
In spoken conversation, jam delapan means “eight o'clock.” Careful announcements prefer pukul delapan or a numeric form such as pukul 08.00. EYD V permits either a period or a colon between hour and minute: 08.30 and 08:30 are both standard.
Kelas dimulai jam delapan, jadi kita bertemu lima belas menit sebelumnya.
Class starts at eight, so let's meet fifteen minutes earlier. (conversational)
Pendaftaran ulang dibuka pukul 08.00 WIB.
Re-registration opens at 8:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. (formal notice)
Kereta malam dijadwalkan tiba pukul 22.10 WITA.
The night train is scheduled to arrive at 10:10 p.m. Central Indonesian Time.
Digital interfaces often favor a colon, while many Indonesian institutional schedules use a period. Choose one convention consistently within a document; neither separator is inherently nonstandard under EYD V.
Lewat: Minutes After the Hour
Spoken lewat counts forward from the hour: jam tujuh lewat sepuluh is 07.10. Menit can be stated, but is often recoverable.
Dokter datang pukul sembilan lewat sepuluh menit.
The doctor arrives at ten past nine.
Sekarang jam dua lewat seperempat.
It is now a quarter past two. (02.15 or 14.15 from context)
Bus terakhir berangkat jam sebelas lewat dua puluh malam ini.
The last bus leaves at twenty past eleven tonight. (23.20)
Seperempat is a quarter hour, or fifteen minutes. In an official timetable, write the direct value 14.15 rather than translating the spoken fraction into notation.
Kurang: Minutes Before the Next Hour
Kurang counts backward from the hour named after it: jam sembilan kurang sepuluh is ten minutes before nine, or 08.50. This direction is the opposite of lewat.
Kami tiba pukul enam kurang lima menit, tepat sebelum loket dibuka.
We arrived at five to six, just before the ticket counter opened. (05.55)
Berita malam dimulai jam sembilan kurang seperempat.
The evening news begins at a quarter to nine. (20.45)
Telepon saya lagi pukul tiga kurang dua puluh.
Call me again at twenty to three. (02.40 or 14.40 from context)
If ambiguity matters, add pagi, siang, sore, malam or use 24-hour notation.
Half Hours Point Toward the Coming Hour
This is the highest-risk English transfer. Setengah sembilan literally conceptualizes the time as halfway toward nine, so it means 08.30, not 09.30. Setengah delapan means 07.30.
Acara dimulai pukul setengah sembilan pagi.
The event begins at half past eight in the morning. (08.30)
Saya menjemput Rani jam setengah delapan malam.
I pick Rani up at half past seven in the evening. (19.30)
Pukul 15.30 dapat disebut setengah empat sore dalam percakapan.
3:30 p.m. can be called half past three in conversation. (literally half toward four)
The direct official reading pukul lima belas tiga puluh is possible for 15.30, particularly when accuracy matters. Ordinary conversation more often shifts to a twelve-hour expression plus part of day.
Parts of the Day and Noon/Midnight
Pagi covers morning, siang midday and early afternoon, sore late afternoon, and malam evening/night. Boundaries vary with context; use 24-hour notation for an institutionally exact schedule.
Wawancara dijadwalkan pukul sepuluh pagi, bukan pukul sepuluh malam.
The interview is scheduled for ten in the morning, not ten at night.
Makan siang akan disajikan tepat pukul 12.00.
Lunch will be served at exactly noon.
Sistem diperbarui mulai pukul 00.00 sampai pukul 02.00 WIB.
The system is updated from midnight until 2:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time.
Tengah hari is noon and tengah malam midnight. In a timetable, 12.00 and 00.00 prevent the ambiguity of English 12 a.m./p.m.
Weekdays
Weekday names are capitalized:
| Indonesian | English |
|---|---|
| Senin | Monday |
| Selasa | Tuesday |
| Rabu | Wednesday |
| Kamis | Thursday |
| Jumat | Friday |
| Sabtu | Saturday |
| Minggu | Sunday |
Kantor cabang tutup pada Sabtu dan Minggu.
The branch office is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Kami biasanya mengadakan evaluasi setiap Senin sore.
We usually hold an evaluation every Monday afternoon.
Standard spelling is Jumat, without an apostrophe. A weekday before a full date is followed by a comma: Jumat, 28 Agustus 2026.
Dates and Months
Indonesian puts day before month before year. Month names are capitalized:
| Months 1–6 | Months 7–12 |
|---|---|
| Januari | Juli |
| Februari | Agustus |
| Maret | September |
| April | Oktober |
| Mei | November |
| Juni | Desember |
Janji dokter saya pada Rabu, 9 September 2026, pukul 14.30 WIB.
My doctor's appointment is on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time.
Pameran berlangsung dari 12 sampai 14 Mei 2026.
The exhibition runs from May 12 through May 14, 2026.
Tanggal penerbitan dokumen itu ditulis 28-08-2026.
The document's issue date is written 28-08-2026. (day–month–year)
When the month is written as a word, use 17 Agustus 1945, not English month–day order. In an all-numeric standard date, hyphens separate day, month, and year. Writing the month name is safest for an international audience.
Historical Dates and Reading Years
Years are read as full cardinals. 1945 is seribu sembilan ratus empat puluh lima; 2026 is dua ribu dua puluh enam.
Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia dibacakan pada 17 Agustus 1945.
The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read on August 17, 1945.
Konferensi itu akan diselenggarakan pada 21 Oktober 2026.
The conference will be held on October 21, 2026.
Tanggal 1 Juni dibaca tanggal satu Juni dalam penyebutan biasa.
June 1 is ordinarily read tanggal satu Juni, literally date one June.
English uses ordinals when speaking dates (June first). Indonesian ordinarily uses the cardinal date number: tanggal satu Juni, not a mandatory tanggal pertama Juni.
WIB, WITA, and WIT
Indonesia has three standard time zones:
| Abbreviation | Full name | UTC offset |
|---|---|---|
| WIB | Waktu Indonesia Barat | UTC+7 |
| WITA | Waktu Indonesia Tengah | UTC+8 |
| WIT | Waktu Indonesia Timur | UTC+9 |
At the same moment, WITA is one hour ahead of WIB and WIT is two hours ahead of WIB.
Rapat dimulai pukul 09.00 WIB, yaitu pukul 10.00 WITA dan pukul 11.00 WIT.
The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. WIB, which is 10:00 a.m. WITA and 11:00 a.m. WIT.
Siaran langsung berlangsung pukul 18.30 WITA atau pukul 17.30 WIB.
The live broadcast takes place at 6:30 p.m. WITA or 5:30 p.m. WIB.
Undangan daring harus menyebutkan zona waktu agar peserta tidak terlambat.
An online invitation must state the time zone so participants are not late.
The abbreviations are written in capitals without internal periods. Never copy one clock reading across zones without converting it.
Appointments and Timetables
A complete appointment can combine weekday, date, clock time, and zone. A timetable may omit words inside a table, but surrounding prose should keep the function clear.
Konsultasi dijadwalkan pada Kamis, 15 Oktober 2026, pukul 13.15 WIB.
The consultation is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 1:15 p.m. WIB.
Kereta pertama berangkat pukul 06.45 WIB dan tiba pukul 09.10 WIB.
The first train departs at 6:45 a.m. WIB and arrives at 9:10 a.m. WIB.
Waktu tempuh kereta itu dua jam dua puluh lima menit.
That train's travel time is two hours twenty-five minutes.
The last two values are consistent: 06.45 to 09.10 is exactly 2 hours 25 minutes.
Attached se- in Durations
Sejam means “one hour” and is written solid. With larger numerals, use separate words: dua jam, tiga setengah jam.
Lokakarya berlangsung sejam, kemudian peserta beristirahat.
The workshop lasts one hour, then the participants take a break.
Perjalanan itu memerlukan waktu tiga setengah jam.
That journey takes three and a half hours.
Do not write se jam. This se- is bound, just like setengah and seribu. The full written conventions are collected on writing numbers and dates.
Common Mistakes
1. Using pukul as a duration unit
❌ Pelatihan berlangsung selama tiga pukul.
Incorrect — pukul marks a clock point, not a measured duration.
✅ Pelatihan berlangsung selama tiga jam.
The training lasts for three hours.
2. Misreading the half hour
❌ Setengah delapan berarti pukul 08.30.
Incorrect — Indonesian counts halfway toward eight, so setengah delapan is 07.30.
✅ Kami berangkat pukul setengah delapan, yaitu pukul 07.30.
We leave at half past seven, namely 7:30.
3. Importing month–day order
❌ Pertemuan pada 08-28-2026 mengikuti urutan tanggal Indonesia.
Incorrect — Indonesian all-numeric dates use day–month–year.
✅ Pertemuan pada 28-08-2026 dimulai pukul 09.00.
The meeting on August 28, 2026, begins at 9:00.
4. Mixing clock separators within one notice
❌ Dalam surat resmi yang sama, pendaftaran dibuka pukul 08.30 dan ditutup pukul 16:30 WIB.
Inconsistent presentation — EYD V permits both separators, but one notice should follow one convention.
✅ Dalam surat resmi itu, pendaftaran dibuka pukul 08.30 dan ditutup pukul 16.30 WIB.
In that official letter, registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m. WIB.
5. Copying one time across different zones
❌ Pukul 09.00 WIB sama dengan pukul 09.00 WITA pada saat yang sama.
Incorrect conversion — WITA is one hour ahead of WIB.
✅ Pukul 09.00 WIB sama dengan pukul 10.00 WITA pada saat yang sama.
9:00 a.m. WIB is the same moment as 10:00 a.m. WITA.
