set, perangkat, and unit

Indonesian can count things by packaging them as a set, a functional perangkat, or an administrative unit. These words are ordinary nouns serving as counting heads, not three empty translations of English set, device, or unit. Choosing one tells the listener what makes the counted material cohere.

This page focuses on those packaging meanings. General cardinal formation, noun reduplication, and the lexical meanings of the following nouns belong to their own pages.

The shared pattern

All three heads occur in the pattern numeral + packaging head + noun. The noun identifies what is being packaged; the middle word identifies the unit that the numeral counts.

HeadWhat counts as oneTypical phrase
seta matched or commercially assembled collectionsatu set meja
perangkatequipment or a device with a functiondua perangkat komputer
unitone administratively countable asset or instancetiga unit apartemen

Kami memesan satu set meja untuk ruang rapat baru.

We ordered one table set for the new meeting room.

Sekolah itu menerima dua perangkat komputer untuk laboratorium.

The school received two computer devices for the laboratory.

Pengembang masih menawarkan tiga unit apartemen di lantai teratas.

The developer is still offering three apartment units on the top floor.

Larger numerals remain separate: dua puluh set kursi, lima perangkat komputer, seratus unit rumah. Indonesian units do not acquire an English plural ending: tiga unit apartemen, never tiga units apartemen. See cardinal numbers for the internal formation of larger numerals.

Set: members designed or sold together

Set is a borrowed but fully established noun for a collection whose members match, complement one another, or are sold as one package. Satu set meja normally invites a set reading—perhaps a table with matching chairs—not simply one isolated table. The exact contents come from context or a following explanation.

Harga itu sudah termasuk satu set meja makan dengan enam kursi.

That price already includes one dining set with six chairs.

Kami membutuhkan dua set seragam: satu untuk latihan dan satu untuk pertandingan.

We need two sets of uniforms: one for practice and one for matches.

Toko itu menjual satu set pisau yang terdiri atas lima ukuran.

The shop sells a knife set consisting of five sizes.

English set is broad, but Indonesian set is not automatically the best choice for every collection. A crowd of people is not normally set, and one standalone machine is not made a collection just by calling it satu set. Use set when matching, completeness, or commercial bundling matters.

In neutral and commercial language, satu set is more usual than trying to fuse se- with the loanword. The fused spelling rule still applies wherever a conventional se- form is used; it does not force speakers to create seset.

Perangkat: equipment organized by function

Perangkat views something as equipment: tools or components organized to perform a function. It can name a whole apparatus (seperangkat alat) or, in modern technical language, an individual device (perangkat seluler, perangkat komputer). That flexibility is real, so context must reveal whether the phrase counts systems or individual devices.

Teknisi membawa seperangkat alat untuk memeriksa jaringan.

The technician brought a set of tools to inspect the network.

Aplikasi ini dapat dipasang pada tiga perangkat seluler.

This application can be installed on three mobile devices.

Setiap perangkat komputer harus terhubung ke jaringan internal.

Each computer device must be connected to the internal network.

The distinguishing idea is function, not visual matching. A screwdriver set sold in a case can be satu set obeng; the tools a technician needs as functional equipment can be seperangkat alat. Sometimes both descriptions are possible, but they answer different questions: “what came as one package?” versus “what equipment performs the job?”

💡
Use set to foreground membership in a matched package; use perangkat to foreground an apparatus or device and what it does.

Write the established fused form seperangkat as one word. With higher numerals, write separately: dua perangkat komputer, not duaperangkat komputer.

Unit: one asset, machine, dwelling, or administrative instance

Unit creates a boundary for counting in inventories, sales, property, transport, and organizations. It is especially common when the referent is treated as an asset, an independently operated machine, one dwelling in a development, or one branch within a larger structure.

Perusahaan menyewa empat unit kendaraan untuk tim lapangan.

The company rented four vehicles for the field team.

Rumah sakit membeli satu unit mesin MRI baru.

The hospital bought one new MRI machine.

Kompleks itu terdiri atas delapan puluh unit rumah.

The complex consists of eighty housing units.

The phrase satu unit mesin MRI counts one machine as a procurement asset. Satu perangkat MRI would instead emphasize the equipment or system. Satu set MRI would suggest an assembled package and needs a context in which multiple included components truly form a set.

Unit is frequent in formal, administrative, property, and commercial registers. It is not required whenever English uses one: everyday Saya membeli mesin cuci baru is more natural than inserting unit unless an inventory, sales, or asset-counting perspective matters.

💡
A counting head is a lens. Unit says “treat this as one independently recorded instance,” even when the following noun is already countable.

One is not mechanically formed the same way

The broad orthographic rule is simple: productive se- attaches to its base, as in seperangkat. Actual lexical preference is less tidy. Speakers commonly say satu set and satu unit, especially in commercial and administrative counting, rather than forcing an unfamiliar fused form. With all higher numerals, the separation is straightforward: dua set, dua perangkat, dua unit.

This is a vocabulary fact, not a flaw in the spelling rule. Learn the conventional phrase along with the head. For more on productive one-forms in the core classifier system, see seorang.

Common Mistakes

1. Using set for one ungrouped object

❌ Saya membeli satu set meja kecil tanpa kursi atau perlengkapan lain.

Incorrect for one standalone table — set presents the referent as a grouped package.

✅ Saya membeli satu meja kecil tanpa kursi.

I bought one small table without chairs.

2. Treating perangkat and set as empty synonyms

❌ Aplikasi itu dipasang pada dua set seluler.

Incorrect — mobile devices are functional devices, not matched sets here.

✅ Aplikasi itu dipasang pada dua perangkat seluler.

The application was installed on two mobile devices.

3. Missing the administrative perspective of unit

❌ Pengembang menjual tiga set apartemen yang tersisa.

Incorrect — the apartments are individual property units, not one or more matched sets.

✅ Pengembang menjual tiga unit apartemen yang tersisa.

The developer sold the three remaining apartment units.

4. Adding English plural morphology

❌ Perusahaan membeli lima units komputer.

Incorrect — Indonesian measure and packaging heads do not take an English plural -s.

✅ Perusahaan membeli lima unit komputer.

The company bought five computer units.

Key Takeaways

  • Set packages matching or commercially bundled members.
  • Perangkat packages equipment or a device by functional organization.
  • Unit packages an independently counted asset, dwelling, machine, or administrative instance.
  • The order is numeral + head + noun: tiga unit apartemen.
  • Write seperangkat solid, higher numerals separately, and every unit word without a plural ending.
