The classifier pasang packages two related components as one pair-unit. Sepasang sepatu is one functional pair of shoes, while dua pasang sepatu is two pairs—normally four shoes. The numeral counts pair-units, not loose objects.
This page covers matched objects, body-part pairs, and socially linked couples in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves general numeral formation, plural reduplication, and the complete lexical semantics of the counted nouns to dedicated pages. Write fused sepasang for one pair, keep larger numerals separate in dua pasang, and do not add plural endings to pasang or the counted noun.
The core pattern
Use numeral + pasang + noun. Each counted unit contains two components that conventionally belong, function, or are interpreted together.
| Phrase | Pair-units | Individual components |
|---|---|---|
| sepasang sepatu | one pair | two shoes |
| dua pasang kaus kaki | two pairs | four socks |
| tiga pasang anting | three pairs | six earrings |
| sepasang mata | one pair | two eyes |
Saya membeli sepasang sepatu untuk dipakai saat wawancara.
I bought a pair of shoes to wear to the interview.
Dia membawa dua pasang kaus kaki untuk perjalanan itu.
He or she brought two pairs of socks for the trip.
Kotak itu berisi tiga pasang anting perak.
The box contains three pairs of silver earrings.
The counted noun stays unreduplicated after the exact numeral. Indonesian plurality is already supplied by dua or tiga, while pasang supplies the internal two-part organization.
Shoes: pair versus components
Shoes provide the clearest contrast. Sepasang sepatu guarantees that the speaker presents two shoes as a functional pair. Dua sepatu counts two individual shoes but does not guarantee that they match or form a wearable pair.
Di depan pintu ada sepasang sepatu hitam.
There is a pair of black shoes by the door.
Saya menemukan dua sepatu, tetapi keduanya untuk kaki kiri.
I found two shoes, but both are for the left foot.
Toko itu memberi diskon untuk pembelian dua pasang sepatu.
The shop gives a discount on the purchase of two pairs of shoes.
The required phrase dua sepatu is therefore not a shorter synonym for sepasang sepatu. It states component count only. In the second example, the two shoes cannot function as one normal pair. Pasang adds a relation that the numeral dua alone does not.
Direct satu pasang sepatu is also grammatical, especially in lists, contrast, and inventory language: satu pasang sepatu dan dua pasang sandal. The compact fused form sepasang sepatu is the ordinary expression outside such explicit counting contrasts.
Socks and other matched wearables
Socks, gloves, and some other wearables are used in corresponding left/right or two-member sets. Pasang counts those matched functional units.
Saya memasukkan dua pasang kaus kaki bersih ke dalam koper.
I put two pairs of clean socks into the suitcase.
Satu kaus kaki hilang, jadi pasangannya tidak lengkap.
One sock is missing, so its pair is incomplete.
Petugas membagikan sepasang sarung tangan kepada setiap peserta.
The attendant handed a pair of gloves to each participant.
The derived noun pasangan in pasangannya means partner, counterpart, or matching mate. It is not a classifier in that position, though it belongs to the same semantic family. The attached -nya is written solid.
When the items are sold singly, count the components directly. Dua kaus kaki means two socks and can describe one pair if context says they match, but sepasang kaus kaki explicitly packages them as a pair.
Earrings and matching ornaments
Sepasang anting counts two earrings intended to be worn or sold together. The pair may be identical or complementary; the crucial point is their recognized set membership.
Ia menerima sepasang anting dari neneknya.
She received a pair of earrings from her grandmother.
Saya hanya menemukan satu anting di dalam kotak.
I found only one earring in the box.
Dua pasang anting itu dibuat oleh perajin lokal.
Those two pairs of earrings were made by a local craftsperson.
Satu anting is one component. Sepasang anting is two components functioning as one jewelry set. If an ornament is not conventionally paired, pasang needs a special contextual reason rather than simply the fact that two objects look similar.
Eyes and paired body parts
Body parts that conventionally occur as a corresponding pair can take pasang. Sepasang mata presents a person's two eyes as one coordinated perceptual pair.
Sepasang mata anak itu mengikuti gerak layang-layang.
The child's two eyes followed the kite's movement.
Dua pasang mata mengawasi pintu dari sudut ruangan.
Two pairs of eyes watched the door from the corner of the room.
Dokter memeriksa kedua mata pasien itu.
The doctor examined both of the patient's eyes.
Dua pasang mata normally evokes two people watching—four eyes in total—though figurative contexts can leave the owners implicit. Kedua mata instead means “both eyes” within one already identified set. The two constructions organize number differently.
The expression sepasang mata is neutral but often vivid in narrative. Direct dua mata is possible when anatomy or component count matters. The classifier highlights coordinated pairing.
Spouses and human couples
Pasang can package two people as a socially recognized couple. Common phrases include sepasang suami istri, sepasang pengantin, and sepasang kekasih.
Sepasang suami istri itu membuka toko roti di dekat rumah kami.
That married couple opened a bakery near our house.
Fotografer meminta sepasang pengantin berdiri di dekat jendela.
The photographer asked the bride and groom to stand near the window.
Di bangku taman itu duduk sepasang kekasih.
A couple was sitting on that park bench.
These phrases do not reduce people to objects; they foreground their two-person social relation. Dua suami istri is structurally unclear because dua could appear to count individuals or two marital units. Sepasang suami istri unambiguously means one married couple.
For two couples, use dua pasang suami istri: four people organized as two marital pairs. In formal demographic writing, dua pasangan suami istri is another natural option, using the noun pasangan “couple.”
Functional relation, not the number two alone
Two items qualify as a pasang when convention or context links their roles. Two random chairs are dua kursi; they become sepasang kursi only if a design, placement, or sale deliberately treats them as one matched set. Two shoes can still fail to form a pair if both are left shoes.
Kami membeli dua kursi yang berbeda untuk ruang kerja.
We bought two different chairs for the study.
Di depan perapian ada sepasang kursi yang serasi.
In front of the fireplace there is a matching pair of chairs.
The classifier contributes functional or designed pairing, not agreement. English also distinguishes “two chairs” from “a pair of chairs,” but learners often lose track of the unit when another numeral appears. Indonesian dua pasang mirrors English “two pairs”: the numeral counts pairs.
Optionality, sets, and spelling
For inherently countable items, direct numerals are normal: dua sepatu, empat kaus kaki, satu anting. Use pasang when the internal two-member unit matters. Larger collections organized beyond pairs may use set, perangkat, or unit, covered on the set classifier page.
Write sepasang solid, never se pasang or se-pasang. Write dua pasang, dua puluh pasang, and beberapa pasang with spaces. Do not add plural -s. Do not mechanically reduplicate the noun after an exact numeral: dua pasang sepatu, not dua pasang sepatu-sepatu.
Common Mistakes
❌ Saya membeli se pasang sepatu baru.
Incorrect spelling — sepasang is fused.
✅ Saya membeli sepasang sepatu baru.
I bought a new pair of shoes.
❌ Dua pasang sepatu berarti dua sepatu.
Incorrect — the numeral counts two pair-units, normally four shoes.
✅ Dua pasang sepatu berarti empat sepatu.
Two pairs of shoes means four shoes.
❌ Dia membawa dua pasangs kaus kaki.
Incorrect — Indonesian classifier units take no English plural ending.
✅ Dia membawa dua pasang kaus kaki.
He or she brought two pairs of socks.
❌ Kotak itu berisi tiga anting, yaitu tiga pasang lengkap.
Incorrect count — three individual earrings cannot form three complete pairs.
✅ Kotak itu berisi enam anting, yaitu tiga pasang lengkap.
The box contains six earrings, that is, three complete pairs.
❌ Dua sepatu itu pasti merupakan sepasang sepatu.
Incorrect — two components may not match or function together.
✅ Dua sepatu itu sama-sama untuk kaki kiri, jadi bukan sepasang.
Both shoes are for the left foot, so they are not a pair.
