Using -kan accurately means knowing which participant becomes the direct object, how the stem behaves under different voices, when -i or an unsuffixed verb expresses a different event, and which derivatives Indonesian has conventionalized. The suffix is productive, but productivity works through lexical families rather than allowing every logically imaginable coinage. Its causative and benefactive roles are mapped on the -kan meaning page.
Valency changes must be learned as frames
Intransitive event to transitive causative
With duduk and masuk, the base event has one central participant. -Kan adds a causer and remaps that original participant as the object.
Para peserta duduk di ruang tunggu.
The participants sit in the waiting room.
Petugas mendudukkan para peserta di ruang tunggu.
The officer seats the participants in the waiting room.
Berkas itu masuk ke map biru.
The file goes into the blue folder.
Petugas memasukkan berkas itu ke map biru.
The officer puts the file into the blue folder.
The object of mendudukkan is the person or thing caused to sit. The object of memasukkan is the theme caused to move inward; the destination normally follows ke or another locative expression.
Property to caused result
With a property base, the object undergoes a change into that property. Compare the predicate Lantainya bersih with causative Mereka membersihkan lantainya.
Lantai aula sudah bersih.
The hall floor is already clean.
Petugas membersihkan lantai aula setelah acara.
The staff clean the hall floor after the event.
Suasana rapat akhirnya tenang.
The atmosphere in the meeting is finally calm.
Ketua berhasil menenangkan suasana rapat.
The chair managed to calm the atmosphere in the meeting.
Transitive event to benefactive frame
With an already transitive verb such as membaca, -kan can introduce a beneficiary or addressee. The beneficiary can be promoted directly after the verb, followed by the theme, or the theme can remain object and the beneficiary appear in a prepositional phrase.
Tari membaca pengumuman itu.
Tari reads the announcement.
Tari membacakan neneknya pengumuman itu.
Tari reads her grandmother the announcement.
Tari membacakan pengumuman itu untuk nenek.
Tari reads the announcement for Grandma.
The -kan stem across voice constructions
Voice marking changes which participant anchors the clause, but the derived stem keeps -kan. Compare one lexical event across four common environments:
| Environment | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Actor-oriented | actor + meN-...-kan + object | Panitia membacakan hasil |
| di- passive | object + di-...-kan + agent | Hasil dibacakan panitia |
| Pronoun-agent object voice | object + pronoun + base...-kan | Hasil itu saya bacakan |
| Imperative | base...-kan + object | Bacakan hasilnya |
Panitia membacakan hasil pemungutan suara.
The committee reads out the voting results.
Hasil pemungutan suara dibacakan oleh ketua panitia.
The voting results are read out by the committee chair.
Hasil lengkapnya akan saya bacakan setelah jeda.
I will read out the full results after the break.
Bacakan nama pemenangnya sekali lagi.
Read out the winner's name once more.
The prefix alternation in membacakan belongs to actor voice. When a first-person pronoun precedes the verb in object voice, remove meN- but retain the suffix: saya bacakan, not saya membacakan and not saya baca if the benefactive/read-aloud meaning is intended.
Formulir itu dimasukkan petugas ke map khusus.
The form is put into a special folder by the officer.
Formulir itu sudah saya masukkan ke map khusus.
I have put the form into a special folder.
Ruang pertemuan dibersihkan sebelum tamu tiba.
The meeting room is cleaned before the guests arrive.
Ruang pertemuan akan kami bersihkan sore ini.
We will clean the meeting room this afternoon.
-kan inside noun phrases
Relative clauses preserve the same participant mapping. The head noun can be the affected object of a passive or object-voice stem, while yang introduces the describing clause.
Anak yang didudukkan di baris depan itu keponakan saya.
The child seated in the front row is my niece.
Pesan yang dibacakan panitia berasal dari kepala sekolah.
The message read out by the committee came from the principal.
Barang yang saya masukkan ke kotak itu mudah pecah.
The item I put in that box is fragile.
Ruangan yang dibersihkan tadi pagi sudah dipakai lagi.
The room cleaned this morning has already been used again.
English relative clauses often leave the valency change invisible: βthe item I put in the box.β Indonesian keeps -kan because the caused-motion structure remains part of the verb, even when the object appears as the head noun.
Competition with an unsuffixed verb and -i
The suffix is not an optional intensifier. Removing it can restore an intransitive event or remove a beneficiary:
Adik masuk ke kamar tanpa mengetuk.
My younger sibling enters the room without knocking.
Ibu memasukkan pakaian bersih ke lemari.
Mother puts the clean clothes into the wardrobe.
Dina membaca cerita itu sendiri.
Dina reads the story herself.
Dina membacakan anak-anak cerita itu.
Dina reads the children that story.
-Kan also competes with -i by choosing a different direct object. With caused motion, memasukkan barang ke gudang makes barang the moving object. With goal-oriented memasuki gudang, gudang itself is the direct object. With transfer, mengirimkan paket kepada Rina keeps the package as object, whereas mengirimi Rina paket makes the recipient the first object.
Mereka memasukkan peralatan ke gudang sebelum hujan.
They put the equipment into the warehouse before it rained.
Mereka memasuki gudang untuk memeriksa atap.
They entered the warehouse to inspect the roof.
Saya mengirimkan salinan kontrak kepada Rudi.
I send a copy of the contract to Rudi.
Saya mengirimi Rudi salinan kontrak.
I send Rudi a copy of the contract.
Another useful pair is menuliskan alamat di formulir versus menulisi papan dengan slogan. The -kan form profiles the content produced; the -i form makes the written-on surface the target and often suggests extensive or repeated application.
Petugas menuliskan nomor antrean pada kartu.
The clerk writes the queue number on a card.
Para pengunjuk rasa menulisi papan itu dengan berbagai slogan.
The protesters cover the board with various slogans.
Productive schema plus lexical families
Some families support transparent alternations; others are lexicalized. Menyewakan rumah means rent a house out to someone, whereas menyewa rumah normally means rent it as the tenant. Meninggalkan means βleave,β melakukan βcarry out,β and menyelesaikan βfinish/resolve.β Their argument frames and collocations cannot be inferred by adding a vague causative meaning.
Pemilik itu menyewakan rumahnya kepada keluarga muda.
The owner rents out his house to a young family.
Keluarga itu menyewa rumah selama dua tahun.
The family rents the house for two years.
Tim hukum menyelesaikan pemeriksaan dokumen pada hari Jumat.
The legal team completes the document review on Friday. (formal)
Jangan meninggalkan barang berharga di dalam mobil.
Do not leave valuables inside the car.
A dictionary-listed derivative proves that the word is established, not that its meaning is fully compositional or that an analogous derivative exists for every similar base. Learn menyewakan sesuatu kepada seseorang, not just sewa + -kan.
Standard and conversational realizations
Full -kan forms are normal in writing and careful speech. Urban colloquial varieties, especially Jakarta-influenced Indonesian, often replace both -kan and -i with -in: dudukin, bacain, masukin, bersihin (informal; especially urban/Jakarta-influenced). Because -in can correspond to either standard suffix, it obscures the standard -kan/-i contrast.
Petugas mendudukkan peserta di ruang tunggu, membacakan petunjuk, memasukkan formulir ke map, lalu membersihkan meja layanan.
The officer seats the participant in the waiting room, reads out the instructions, puts the form in a folder, and then cleans the service desk. (formal)
Dudukin Dita di ruang tunggu, bacain petunjuknya, masukin formulirnya ke map, terus bersihin mejanya, ya.
Seat Dita in the waiting room, read her the instructions, put the form in the folder, then clean the desk, okay? (informal, Jakarta-influenced)
Tolong masukkan alamat lengkap Anda ke kolom ini.
Please enter your full address in this field. (formal)
Masukin alamat lengkapmu ke kolom ini, ya.
Put your full address in this field, okay? (informal, Jakarta-influenced)
Many speakers retain standard -kan in relaxed conversation, and colloquial choices vary by region. Treat -in as a labeled spoken variant, not as the written allomorph of standard -kan.
Common Mistakes
Retaining meN- in pronoun-agent object voice
β Laporan itu saya membacakan kepada direktur.
Incorrect in standard object voice β after saya, use the stem without meN-.
β Laporan itu saya bacakan kepada direktur.
I read that report aloud to the director.
Dropping -kan when voice changes
β Bayi itu diduduk di kursi tinggi.
Incorrect β the causative meaning requires the full stem dudukkan.
β Bayi itu didudukkan di kursi tinggi.
The baby is seated in the high chair.
Choosing -kan when the location should be the object
β Kami memasukkan gedung untuk mencari ruang arsip.
Incorrect for βenter the buildingβ β memasukkan requires something caused to go inside.
β Kami memasuki gedung untuk mencari ruang arsip.
We enter the building to look for the archive room.
Coining a derivative from any convenient noun
β Saya melampukan kamar agar lebih terang.
Nonstandard coinage β lampu does not form this verb for turning on a light.
β Saya menyalakan lampu meja supaya ruangan lebih terang.
I turn on the desk lamp so that the room is brighter.
Confusing beneficiary and caused actor
β Ibu membacakan adik buku agar adik berlatih membaca sendiri.
Wrong frame for the intended event β membacakan makes Ibu the reader, not adik.
β Ibu menyuruh adik membaca buku agar adik berlatih membaca sendiri.
Mother tells my younger sibling to read a book so that the child practices reading independently.
Key Takeaways
- Learn every -kan verb with its object and any goal, beneficiary, or result complement.
- Voice changes the clause perspective but retains the derived stem: membacakan, dibacakan, saya bacakan.
- Compare -kan and -i through object selection: moving theme versus location, or transferred theme versus recipient.
- Productive formation coexists with lexical families whose meanings and collocations require dictionary evidence.
- Colloquial -in is a regional/informal replacement, not a standard spelling variant of -kan.
