Forms such as mempukul, mentulis, mensapu, and mengkirim preserve too much of the dictionary root. In productive native patterns, initial p, t, s, and k are commonly replaced by the nasal of meN-: pukul → memukul, tulis → menulis, sapu → menyapu, kirim → mengirim. The complete inventory appears in the meN- formation guide; this page concentrates on repairing consonants that learners wrongly retain.
This is morphophonology, not irregular spelling. The prefix has several surface allomorphs, and its nasal fuses with the base's initial voiceless stop or s. English speakers often expect an affix to leave the stem visibly intact, but Indonesian word formation can hide the first consonant. This page diagnoses that particular error rather than reteaching every meN- paradigm or every lexical exception.
The repair operation: substitute, do not stack
For many established bases beginning with a single p, t, s, or k, use this three-step analysis:
- recover the dictionary base;
- select the nasal allomorph that matches its place of articulation;
- replace the initial p/t/s/k instead of retaining it after that nasal.
| Base | Wrong stacking | Substitution | Surface form |
|---|---|---|---|
| pukul | mem+pukul | p is replaced after mem- | memukul |
| tulis | men+tulis | t is replaced after men- | menulis |
| sapu | meny+sapu | s is replaced after meny- | menyapu |
| kirim | meng+kirim | k is replaced after meng- | mengirim |
❌ Petugas keamanan mempukul pintu besi itu dengan tongkat.
Incorrect productive form—pukul loses initial p after the matching nasal.
✅ Petugas keamanan memukul pintu besi itu dengan tongkat.
The security officer struck the metal door with a baton.
❌ Rani mentulis alamat barunya di belakang amplop.
Incorrect productive form—tulis surfaces as menulis, without initial t.
✅ Rani menulis alamat barunya di belakang amplop.
Rani writes her new address on the back of the envelope.
❌ Pak Hasan mensapu pecahan kaca dengan hati-hati.
Incorrect productive form—sapu selects meny- and loses initial s.
✅ Pak Hasan menyapu pecahan kaca dengan hati-hati.
Mr. Hasan carefully sweeps up the broken glass.
❌ Toko buku itu mengkirim pesanan ke luar kota setiap sore.
Incorrect productive form—kirim surfaces as mengirim, without initial k.
✅ Toko buku itu mengirim pesanan ke luar kota setiap sore.
That bookstore sends out-of-town orders every afternoon.
Why each nasal looks different
The abstract label meN- contains a capital N because the nasal changes according to the following sound. Before lip sounds it surfaces in mem-; before coronal sounds in men-; before s in meny-; before vowels, velars, and h in meng-; before l, m, n, ny, ng, r, w, y the form is me-.
Maya membaca petunjuk sebelum menyalakan mesin.
Maya reads the instructions before starting the machine. (baca → membaca)
Deni mencari apotek yang masih buka malam ini.
Deni is looking for a pharmacy that is still open tonight. (cari → mencari)
Kami mengambil nomor antrean di pintu masuk.
We take a queue number at the entrance. (ambil → mengambil)
Perawat melihat nama pasien pada gelang identitas.
The nurse checks the patient's name on the identity wristband. (lihat → melihat)
The surviving consonants in membaca and mencari are not counterexamples. Productive deletion targets initial p, t, s, k, not every initial consonant. B, d, c, j, g, and other classes follow their own allomorph without undergoing the same substitution.
Four base families, step by step
Initial p: mem- replaces p
❌ Kami mempilih jadwal yang paling murah tanpa memeriksa waktunya.
Incorrect—pilih follows the productive p-substitution pattern.
✅ Kami memilih jadwal yang paling murah setelah memeriksa waktunya.
We choose the cheapest schedule after checking its time.
The same pattern appears in pakai → memakai, pesan → memesan, potong → memotong, and pinjam → meminjam.
Initial t: men- replaces t
❌ Staf mentutup loket tepat saat kami tiba.
Incorrect—tutup loses t after productive men- attachment.
✅ Staf menutup loket tepat saat kami tiba.
The staff closed the counter just as we arrived.
Compare tarik → menarik, tunggu → menunggu, and tonton → menonton. The nasal itself remains n, but the root-initial t does not.
Initial s: meny- replaces s
❌ Mereka mensewa dua tenda untuk acara akhir pekan.
Incorrect—sewa forms menyewa, not mensewa.
✅ Mereka menyewa dua tenda untuk acara akhir pekan.
They rented two tents for the weekend event.
The productive spelling contains ny, not ns: simpan → menyimpan, sebut → menyebut, susun → menyusun.
Initial k: meng- replaces k
❌ Dita mengkunci pintu belakang sebelum tidur.
Incorrect—kunci forms mengunci in this productive pattern.
✅ Dita mengunci pintu belakang sebelum tidur.
Dita locks the back door before going to bed.
Other common examples include kait → mengait, kuning → menguning, and karang → mengarang. Lexical meaning can complicate base recovery, so use a dictionary when more than one base is plausible.
Clusters usually preserve the first consonant
The deletion rule does not normally remove a consonant that begins a loan cluster. In proses, transfer, kritik, the initial p/t/k is followed by r, and the established forms preserve the cluster: memproses, mentransfer, mengkritik.
Bank sedang memproses permohonan kredit kami.
The bank is processing our loan application. (formal/neutral; pr cluster preserved)
Saya mentransfer uang muka setelah menerima tagihan resmi.
I transferred the deposit after receiving the official invoice. (tr cluster preserved)
Artikel itu mengkritik cara pemerintah menangani banjir.
The article criticizes the way the government handled the flooding. (kr cluster preserved)
Perusahaan akan mensponsori pelatihan bagi guru desa.
The company will sponsor training for village teachers. (sp cluster preserved)
Do not “correct” memproses to memroses or mengkritik to mengritik. The first consonant is protected by the cluster in these established loan formations.
Short bases and lexical exceptions
Many one-syllable bases use extended menge-: cat → mengecat, cek → mengecek, tes → mengetes. Treating them like ordinary polysyllabic bases produces the wrong form.
❌ Teknisi mencek tekanan ban sebelum keberangkatan.
Incorrect standard formation—the one-syllable base cek normally takes menge-.
✅ Teknisi mengecek tekanan ban sebelum keberangkatan.
The technician checks the tire pressure before departure.
Some frequent formations are lexical exceptions or reflect more complex histories. Standard mempunyai preserves p; mengkaji “examine/study” preserves k and contrasts with mengaji “study or recite the Quran.” There is no honest mechanical shortcut at these edges.
Keluarga itu mempunyai kebun kecil di belakang rumah.
That family has a small garden behind the house. (lexicalized form with p)
Tim hukum mengkaji ulang isi perjanjian tersebut.
The legal team is reexamining the contents of the agreement. (formal; established mengkaji)
Predict with the productive pattern, then verify clusters, loans, short bases, and lexicalized families in a reliable dictionary.
Recovering the dictionary root
Do not find the root by simply cutting off the visible prefix. The root of menulis is tulis, not ulis; the root of menyapu is sapu, not yapu; the root of mengirim is kirim, not irim. Reversing nasal substitution restores a possible p/t/s/k, but sometimes more than one root is imaginable.
❌ Bentuk dasar menyusun adalah yusun karena men- dapat dibuang begitu saja.
Incorrect analysis—nasal substitution hides the initial s of susun.
✅ Bentuk dasar menyusun adalah susun, bukan yusun.
The base of menyusun is susun, not yusun.
Look up both the derived form and the hypothesized root. Dictionary checking is part of morphological analysis, not an admission that the productive rule has failed.
Common Mistakes
1. Preserving p after mem-
❌ Kurir mempesan makan siang lewat aplikasi sebelum berangkat.
Incorrect productive form—pesan loses initial p after mem-.
✅ Kurir memesan makan siang lewat aplikasi sebelum berangkat.
The courier orders lunch through an app before leaving.
2. Preserving t after men-
❌ Kami mentunggu hasil pemeriksaan di ruang depan.
Incorrect productive form—tunggu surfaces as menunggu.
✅ Kami menunggu hasil pemeriksaan di ruang depan.
We are waiting for the examination results in the front room.
3. Writing men- plus an unchanged s-root
❌ Sekretaris mensusun daftar tamu berdasarkan urutan kedatangan.
Incorrect productive form—susun takes meny- and loses s.
✅ Sekretaris menyusun daftar tamu berdasarkan urutan kedatangan.
The secretary arranges the guest list in order of arrival.
4. Preserving k before a vowel-initial remainder
❌ Petugas mengkunci gerbang samping setelah acara selesai.
Incorrect productive form—kunci surfaces as mengunci.
✅ Petugas mengunci gerbang samping setelah acara selesai.
The staff member locks the side gate after the event ends.
5. Deleting a consonant from a loan cluster
❌ Redaksi mengritik naskah itu sebelum memuatnya.
Incorrect formation—the established kr cluster remains in mengkritik.
✅ Redaksi mengkritik naskah itu sebelum memuatnya.
The editorial team critiques the manuscript before publishing it.
Key Takeaways
- Productive initial p, t, s, k commonly undergo nasal substitution after meN-.
- The finished words are memukul, menulis, menyapu, and mengirim, not stacked-consonant forms.
- Other initial consonants remain according to the relevant nasal allomorph.
- Loan clusters, many one-syllable bases, and lexicalized exceptions require separate attention.
- Recover the dictionary base morphologically; do not obtain it by blind prefix deletion.
