Confusing di with di-

The errors dirumah and di baca look like missing or unwanted spaces, but the real problem comes earlier: the writer has misidentified the grammar. Locative di is an independent preposition and stays separate; passive di- is a prefix and attaches to its verb. Correct spelling follows from that analysis.

English-speaking learners cannot rely on translation or pronunciation. English uses separate words in both at home and was read, while Indonesian di and di- normally sound alike. This repair guide gives practical tests for the boundary; it does not repeat the complete passive or preposition paradigms covered elsewhere.

Diagnose meaning before touching the space

Ask what the expression contributes to the clause:

  • place or setting → separate di + complement: di rumah, di sana, di atas meja
  • action undergone by a patient → attached di- + verb: dibaca, dikirim, diperbaiki

❌ Paket untuk Rani masih dirumah.

Incorrect—rumah is the location where the parcel remains, so di is a separate preposition.

✅ Paket untuk Rani masih di rumah.

Rani's parcel is still at home.

❌ Pesan dari sekolah itu belum di baca Ayah.

Incorrect—di- builds the passive verb dibaca and must attach to baca.

✅ Pesan dari sekolah itu belum dibaca Ayah.

The message from school has not been read by Dad yet.

The distinction is not “noun versus verb” in a purely mechanical sense. A locative complement can be a long phrase, while a passive base can carry suffixes: di gedung yang baru direnovasi versus diperbaiki. Always determine the relation first.

💡
A spelling error involving di is evidence about parsing. Repair the grammatical analysis—location or passive action—and the space repairs itself.

Test 1: Can it answer di mana?

A separate locative phrase can normally answer di mana? “where?” or be replaced by di sini/di sana. Its complement names a place, area, side, surface, or metaphorical setting.

❌ Kami menunggu didalam mobil karena hujan deras.

Incorrect—di dalam mobil answers where the waiting happens.

✅ Kami menunggu di dalam mobil karena hujan deras.

We waited inside the car because of the heavy rain.

❌ Sepeda anak-anak disimpan dibelakang gudang.

Incorrect—di belakang gudang is a locative phrase, not one derived word.

✅ Sepeda anak-anak disimpan di belakang gudang.

The children's bicycles are stored behind the warehouse.

❌ Nama lengkap peserta tertulis dikolom paling kanan.

Incorrect—the column is the location of the writing, so write di kolom.

✅ Nama lengkap peserta tertulis di kolom paling kanan.

The participant's full name is written in the rightmost column.

The whole phrase after di behaves as a complement. It can be expanded: di kantor, di kantor pusat, di kantor pusat yang baru. That expansion is a useful syntactic clue.

Test 2: Does it predicate an action of the patient?

Attached di- forms a passive verb. The clause presents what is read, sent, cleaned, repaired, or otherwise affected. An agent may follow directly or appear after oleh, although it can also be omitted.

❌ Lantai ruang rapat sedang di bersihkan petugas.

Incorrect—lantai is undergoing the action, so dibersihkan is one passive verb.

✅ Lantai ruang rapat sedang dibersihkan petugas.

The meeting-room floor is being cleaned by a staff member.

❌ Formulir ini harus di isi sebelum pukul empat.

Incorrect—di- attaches to the selected stem isi in the passive verb diisi.

✅ Formulir ini harus diisi sebelum pukul empat.

This form must be completed before four o'clock.

❌ Atap lama itu akan di perbaiki oleh tukang besok.

Incorrect—diperbaiki is a prefixed passive verb, not a prepositional phrase.

✅ Atap lama itu akan diperbaiki oleh tukang besok.

The old roof will be repaired by a builder tomorrow.

The passive diagnostic is syntactic, not simply semantic. Di dalam tas may be associated with an event, but it still locates something. Dimasukkan ke dalam tas predicates the action of putting something in.

One sentence can contain both

Mixed sentences are the best test because an instruction such as “always attach di” or “always separate di” immediately fails.

❌ Surat itu di simpan dilemari besi kantor.

Incorrect twice—the passive prefix is separated, while the locative preposition is joined.

✅ Surat itu disimpan di lemari besi kantor.

The letter is kept in the office safe.

❌ Makanan yang dibeli dipasar sudah di simpan dikulkas.

Incorrect three times—market and refrigerator are locations, while disimpan is a passive verb.

✅ Makanan yang dibeli di pasar sudah disimpan di kulkas.

The food bought at the market has been stored in the refrigerator.

In the final correction, di kulkas describes the storage location. If the destination path itself is foregrounded, use ke dalam kulkas: Makanan itu sudah dimasukkan ke dalam kulkas.

❌ Buku yang ditinggalkan dimeja sudah di kembalikan keperpustakaan.

Incorrect boundaries—di meja and ke perpustakaan are prepositional phrases; dikembalikan is passive.

✅ Buku yang ditinggalkan di meja sudah dikembalikan ke perpustakaan.

The book left on the table has been returned to the library.

The ke parallel

Directional ke is separate before a destination: ke kantor, ke luar kota, ke sana. Attached ke- occurs in words such as ordinals and collectives: kedua, ketiga, kelima. This parallel confirms that spaces encode grammatical structure, not a special visual rule for the letters d-i.

❌ Besok kami berangkat kekantor cabang yang baru.

Incorrect—kantor cabang is the destination introduced by separate ke.

✅ Besok kami berangkat ke kantor cabang yang baru.

Tomorrow we leave for the new branch office.

❌ Rapat ke tiga akan membahas anggaran tahunan.

Incorrect—the ordinal ketiga is one derived word.

✅ Rapat ketiga akan membahas anggaran tahunan.

The third meeting will discuss the annual budget.

Do not generalize beyond productive analysis. Keluar “go out,” kemari “come here,” and kepada “to/toward a recipient” are established words. Consult the core di/ke spelling guide for those lexical boundaries.

Why pronunciation cannot decide

Ordinary speech does not pause reliably at the written space. Di rumah and the beginning of dirawat can both flow as continuous sound. Reading the sentence aloud therefore cannot tell you which one to write.

Use substitution instead:

  1. Replace the phrase with di sana. If the clause keeps the intended location, write di separately.
  2. Replace the word with another passive such as dibaca. If the same patient-oriented syntax survives, attach di-.
  3. Check whether oleh + agent can naturally identify the doer. That supports passive analysis, although passives do not require an overt agent.

❌ Karena terdengar menyatu, kata diruang boleh ditulis tanpa spasi.

Incorrect reasoning—continuous pronunciation does not turn a prepositional phrase into one word.

✅ Walaupun terdengar menyatu, frasa di ruang tetap ditulis dengan spasi.

Although it may sound continuous, the phrase di ruang is still written with a space.

Mixed-paragraph editing

Edit each di/ke according to its own job rather than imposing one rule across the paragraph.

❌ Kemarin kami tiba dikantor pukul delapan. Pintu depan masih di kunci, jadi paket diletakkan diteras. Setelah pintunya di buka, semua paket dibawa kedalam ruang arsip dan di catat dibuku penerimaan.

Incorrect paragraph—locations and destinations have been joined, while several passive prefixes have been separated.

✅ Kemarin kami tiba di kantor pukul delapan. Pintu depan masih dikunci, jadi paket diletakkan di teras. Setelah pintunya dibuka, semua paket dibawa ke dalam ruang arsip dan dicatat di buku penerimaan.

Yesterday we arrived at the office at eight. The front door was still locked, so the parcels were placed on the veranda. After it was opened, all the parcels were taken into the records room and entered in the receipt book.

Notice the alternating analysis: di kantor location, dikunci passive, di teras location, dibuka passive, ke dalam destination, dicatat passive, di buku location.

Common Mistakes

1. Trusting the following word's appearance

❌ Karena sekolah adalah nomina, disekolah harus ditulis sebagai satu kata.

Incorrect analysis—word class does not license attachment; sekolah is a locative complement here.

✅ Karena sekolah menyatakan lokasi, di sekolah ditulis sebagai dua kata.

Because sekolah states a location, di sekolah is written as two words.

2. Treating every di as a preposition

❌ Dokumen rahasia itu di musnahkan setelah masa simpan berakhir.

Incorrect—dimusnahkan predicates a passive action and must be attached.

✅ Dokumen rahasia itu dimusnahkan setelah masa simpan berakhir.

The confidential document was destroyed after its retention period ended.

3. Treating every di as a prefix

❌ Para tamu diminta menunggu diruang sebelah.

Incorrect—ruang sebelah is the location where guests must wait.

✅ Para tamu diminta menunggu di ruang sebelah.

The guests are asked to wait in the next room.

4. Adding a hyphen as a compromise

❌ Nomor antrean di-panggil dari loket paling kiri.

Incorrect—ordinary passive di- attaches directly, without a hyphen.

✅ Nomor antrean dipanggil dari loket paling kiri.

The queue number is called from the leftmost counter.

5. Copying one correction onto every occurrence

❌ Berkas itu diambil dikantor lalu di periksa dirumah.

Incorrect mixed analysis—two locations need spaces, while two passive verbs need attachment.

✅ Berkas itu diambil di kantor lalu diperiksa di rumah.

The file was collected at the office and then examined at home.

Key Takeaways

  • Separate locative di and directional ke from their complements.
  • Attach passive di- and ordinal/collective ke- to their bases.
  • Meaning and syntax reveal the boundary; pronunciation usually does not.
  • Mixed sentences require a fresh analysis of every occurrence.
  • A spacing error is often a voice-or-preposition analysis error in disguise.
