Adding adalah Everywhere

English requires an overt form of be in I am hungry, she is a doctor, and they are at home. Indonesian normally puts the predicate directly after its subject: Saya lapar, Dia dokter, Mereka di rumah. This is not informal deletion or a shortened pronunciation. Zero copula is the normal grammar of these clauses.

Adalah has a legitimate but narrower job: it makes an identification, equation, or definition explicit, especially in formal exposition. The error comes from treating it as a universal translation of English am/is/are/was/were. See formal identification for the full contrast among adalah, ialah, and merupakan.

The category test

Identify the predicate after English be. Indonesian already lets each of these predicate categories form a complete clause:

Predicate categoryNeutral IndonesianMeaning
noun phraseDewi dokter.Dewi is a doctor.
adjective phraseDewi sangat sibuk.Dewi is very busy.
prepositional phraseDewi di klinik.Dewi is at the clinic.
verb phraseDewi sedang bekerja.Dewi is working.

Arman tetangga baru kami.

Arman is our new neighbor.

Kamar belakang terlalu lembap untuk menyimpan buku.

The back room is too damp for storing books.

Anak-anak masih di halaman sekolah.

The children are still in the schoolyard.

Mira sedang menunggu hasil pemeriksaan.

Mira is waiting for the examination results.

No hidden adalah is understood. The noun, adjective, place phrase, or verb phrase predicates directly.

💡
Cross out English be, then classify what remains. If it is an ordinary noun, adjective, location, or verb predicate, build the Indonesian clause directly.

Zero copula is independent of time

English changes its copula for tense and agreement. Indonesian instead uses time expressions, aspect markers, or context while leaving the predicate structure intact.

Dulu gedung ini kantor pos; sekarang tempat ini galeri seni.

This building used to be a post office; now this place is an art gallery.

Kemarin jalanan sangat sepi karena hujan deras.

Yesterday the streets were very quiet because of heavy rain.

Besok saya di Surabaya untuk menghadiri konferensi.

Tomorrow I will be in Surabaya to attend a conference.

The absence of adalah does not restrict the clause to present time. Dulu, kemarin, sekarang, and besok establish the temporal frame.

When adalah is legitimate

Use adalah when the clause explicitly equates or defines two substantial expressions. This is common in (formal) and (academic) writing, prepared speech, focused identification, and clauses with a long subject.

Evaporasi adalah proses perubahan zat cair menjadi uap.

Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into vapor. (academic definition)

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi sumber pencemaran air.

The main aim of this research is to identify the source of water pollution. (academic)

Pemenang penghargaan tahun ini adalah kelompok peneliti dari Makassar.

The winner of this year's award is a research group from Makassar. (formal identification)

Yang paling dibutuhkan warga saat ini adalah akses air bersih.

What residents need most right now is access to clean water. (focused equation)

In the second example, mengidentifikasi... gives the content of the nominal subject tujuan utama penelitian ini. This does not mean adalah can precede any ordinary verb phrase.

Compare a routine classification and an explicit contrast:

Saya anggota tim dokumentasi.

I am a member of the documentation team. (neutral classification)

Saya adalah anggota yang menyerahkan rekaman itu kepada polisi.

I am the member who handed that recording to the police. (explicit contrastive identification)

The second construction emphasizes exactly which member the speaker is. The first simply classifies them.

Adalah does not mean exist, become, or be located

Existence and availability use ada. Change of state uses menjadi. A role accompanying another action often uses sebagai. Location predicates directly with a place phrase.

Ada apotek yang masih buka di dekat stasiun.

There is a pharmacy near the station that is still open.

Setelah pemilihan itu, Laila menjadi ketua koperasi.

After that election, Laila became the cooperative chair.

Bima hadir sebagai wakil organisasi mahasiswa.

Bima attended as the representative of the student organization.

Ruang pertolongan pertama di sebelah loket informasi.

The first-aid room is beside the information desk.

Choosing among these constructions depends on meaning, not on which English sentence happens to contain be.

Negation confirms the predicate category

Negation can help diagnose the structure. Use bukan for an ordinary noun identity and tidak for adjectives, verbs, and many prepositional predicates. There is still no need to insert adalah.

Pak Yusuf bukan pemilik bangunan ini.

Mr. Yusuf is not the owner of this building.

Kopi ini tidak pahit sama sekali.

This coffee is not bitter at all.

Mereka tidak di kantor hari ini.

They are not at the office today.

Rina tidak sedang memakai mobil kantor.

Rina is not using the office car right now.

The contrast bukan pemilik versus tidak pahit shows that predicate category remains grammatically active even without an overt copula.

💡
Zero copula does not mean “no structure.” Noun predicates still select bukan, while adjective and verbal predicates select tidak.

Common Mistakes

The following eleven repairs cover the most frequent English-speaker transfer patterns.

1. Adjective state after adalah

❌ Saya adalah lapar sebelum makan siang.

Incorrect—lapar is an adjective predicate and needs no linker.

✅ Saya lapar sebelum makan siang.

I am hungry before lunch.

2. Location after adalah

❌ Dia adalah di rumah sejak pagi.

Incorrect—a prepositional location phrase predicates directly.

✅ Dia di rumah sejak pagi karena sedang cuti.

She has been at home since morning because she is on leave.

3. Progressive verb after adalah

❌ Para teknisi adalah sedang memeriksa sambungan kabel utama.

Incorrect—sedang already marks the ongoing verbal predicate.

✅ Para teknisi sedang memeriksa sambungan kabel utama.

The technicians are checking the main cable connection.

4. Routine profession with a heavy equation

❌ Dalam perkenalan biasa, saya selalu berkata, “Saya adalah perawat baru.”

Unnatural as a default introduction—the explicit equation is unmotivated.

✅ Saya perawat baru di klinik lantai dua.

I am the new nurse at the clinic on the second floor.

5. Event location with a copied copula

❌ Pertemuan besok adalah di ruang serbaguna.

Incorrect for an ordinary location predicate.

✅ Pertemuan besok di ruang serbaguna lantai dasar.

Tomorrow's meeting is in the multipurpose room on the ground floor.

6. Existence with adalah

❌ Adalah masalah pada sistem pembayaran hari ini.

Incorrect—this introduces the existence of a problem.

✅ Ada masalah pada sistem pembayaran hari ini.

There is a problem with the payment system today.

7. Wrong negator for a noun predicate

❌ Maya tidak dokter yang menangani pasien itu.

Incorrect—dokter is a rejected noun identity and takes bukan.

✅ Maya bukan dokter yang menangani pasien itu.

Maya is not the doctor treating that patient.

8. Combining adalah and merupakan

❌ Laporan ini adalah merupakan hasil pemeriksaan awal.

Incorrect—two formal linkers cannot occupy the same relation.

✅ Laporan ini merupakan hasil pemeriksaan awal.

This report constitutes the result of the preliminary examination. (formal)

9. Inserting adalah to express past time

❌ Kemarin cuaca adalah dingin dan berangin.

Incorrect—adalah does not mark past tense, and adjectives predicate directly.

✅ Kemarin cuaca dingin dan berangin sepanjang hari.

Yesterday the weather was cold and windy all day.

10. Putting adalah before an adjective in a question

❌ Apakah biaya pengiriman ke daerah itu adalah mahal?

Incorrect—the question marker does not create a need for a copula.

✅ Apakah biaya pengiriman ke daerah itu mahal?

Is shipping to that area expensive?

11. Confusing identification with becoming

❌ Setelah lulus, Nisa adalah arsitek.

This identifies Nisa's later profession but does not itself encode the intended transition.

✅ Setelah lulus, Nisa menjadi arsitek di perusahaan itu.

After graduating, Nisa became an architect at that company.

A final repair routine

When an English draft contains be:

  1. Remove be mentally.
  2. Classify the complement as noun, adjective, place phrase, verb phrase, existence, change, or role.
  3. Use the predicate directly for an ordinary noun, adjective, or place clause.
  4. Use ada, menjadi, or sebagai when those meanings are intended.
  5. Restore adalah only when a formal definition, focused identification, or explicit equation genuinely benefits from it.

The difficult part is resisting a word-for-word translation habit. Indonesian has not “left out” English be; it organizes predication differently.

Key Takeaways

  • Zero copula is normal Indonesian grammar, not informal ellipsis.
  • Noun, adjective, prepositional, and verbal predicates do not need adalah by default.
  • Reserve adalah for explicit definitions, equations, and focused identifications.
  • Use ada for existence, menjadi for becoming, and sebagai for a role.
  • Diagnose predicate category before translating English be.
