Formal Indonesian often makes an identificational equation explicit with adalah, ialah, or merupakan. These forms do not supply tense or agreement like English is and are. They package a definition, classification, or focused equation in a style suited to explanations, institutional prose, and edited writing.
Ordinary zero-copula clauses, change of state with menjadi, and role phrases with sebagai have their own patterns. This page focuses on the formal choice among the three explicit linkers and on when none should be inserted.
Review nominal sentences for the ordinary zero-copula baseline that these formal choices elaborate.
The shared function: making an equation explicit
Compare an everyday nominal clause with a formal equation:
Dina ketua baru tim kami.
Dina is our new team leader. (neutral)
Dina adalah ketua tim yang ditunjuk untuk proyek ini.
Dina is the team leader appointed for this project. (formal)
The second version gives the identification more textual weight. The linker helps readers locate the boundary after a subject and before a substantial nominal complement. It does not agree with Dina, and it would remain identical with a plural subject.
Dina dan Faris adalah koordinator kegiatan lapangan.
Dina and Faris are the coordinators of field activities. (formal)
Tujuan utama adalah keselamatan semua penumpang.
The main objective is the safety of all passengers. (formal)
Tujuan utamanya keselamatan semua penumpang.
The main goal is the safety of all passengers. (neutral spoken rewrite)
The required pair shows the core register contrast. The zero-copula rewrite is natural in conversation; the explicit version sounds like a policy statement or presentation heading expanded into a sentence.
Adalah: the general formal equative linker
Adalah is the most broadly useful of the three. It commonly introduces a noun phrase that defines, classifies, names, or identifies the subject.
Literasi digital adalah kemampuan menggunakan teknologi secara kritis dan bertanggung jawab.
Digital literacy is the ability to use technology critically and responsibly. (academic)
Prioritas pertama kami adalah pemulihan layanan air bersih.
Our first priority is restoring the clean-water service. (formal)
Penyebab keterlambatan adalah kerusakan pada sistem pendingin.
The cause of the delay is damage to the cooling system. (formal)
Pemenang lomba tahun ini adalah kelompok dari Kabupaten Sikka.
The winner of this year's competition is the group from Sikka Regency. (formal)
It is also common when the complement names an activity or proposition after a framing noun such as tujuan, tugas, or masalah.
Tugas panitia adalah memastikan semua peserta mendapat tempat duduk.
The committee's task is to ensure that all participants get a seat. (formal)
Langkah berikutnya adalah menghubungi pemilik bangunan.
The next step is to contact the building owner. (formal)
The following verbal material functions as the content of tugas or langkah, not as an ordinary adjective predicate. This does not license adalah before any verb phrase.
Ialah: focused and bookish equation
Ialah overlaps strongly with adalah but is more characteristic of definitions, polished exposition, and focused statements. It frequently follows a subject that announces a problem, essence, answer, or most important element.
Masalahnya ialah biaya perawatan yang terus meningkat.
The problem is the continually rising maintenance cost. (formal)
Masalahnya biaya perawatan yang terus meningkat.
The problem is the continually rising maintenance cost. (neutral spoken rewrite)
Kunci keberhasilan program ini ialah keterlibatan warga sejak awal.
The key to this program's success is resident involvement from the beginning. (formal)
Yang perlu diperiksa lebih dahulu ialah sumber kebocoran.
What must be checked first is the source of the leak. (formal)
Salah satu ciri mamalia ialah kemampuannya menyusui anak.
One characteristic of mammals is their ability to nurse their young. (academic)
There is no clean truth-conditional contrast between adalah and ialah in many of these examples. The difference is genuinely stylistic, and individual editors have preferences. Adalah is more frequent and safer in broad formal use; ialah gives an explicitly definitional or focused, slightly bookish tone.
Ialah is not a third-person form of adalah. Neither linker changes with the subject.
Saya adalah penanggung jawab kegiatan malam ini.
I am the person responsible for tonight's event. (formal)
Mereka adalah anggota tim verifikasi independen.
They are members of the independent verification team. (formal)
Merupakan: a formal relational predicate
Merupakan is a derived verb written as one word. It often means “constitute,” “represent,” “form,” or formal “be,” and it presents the subject as an instance, component, manifestation, or member of the following category.
Bahasa merupakan bagian dari kebudayaan.
Language is part of culture. (academic)
Bahasa bagian dari kebudayaan.
Language is part of culture. (neutral concise rewrite)
Kenaikan suhu laut merupakan ancaman bagi terumbu karang.
Rising sea temperatures constitute a threat to coral reefs. (academic)
Kesepakatan tersebut merupakan langkah awal menuju pemulihan hubungan.
That agreement represents an initial step toward restoring relations. (formal)
Tiga bangunan lama itu merupakan aset milik pemerintah kota.
Those three old buildings are assets belonging to the city government. (formal)
Temuan ini merupakan bukti adanya perubahan pola konsumsi.
This finding constitutes evidence of a change in consumption patterns. (academic)
Because merupakan is a lexical relational predicate, it contributes more semantic substance than a pure linker. It is especially natural with complements such as bagian, ancaman, langkah, aset, bukti, contoh, and wujud.
Long subjects and visible phrase boundaries
Explicit linkers are useful when a subject contains a relative clause or several modifiers. They tell the reader where the subject ends and the predicate begins.
Hal yang paling dikhawatirkan warga di sekitar pabrik adalah pencemaran air tanah.
What residents around the factory fear most is groundwater contamination. (formal)
Salah satu hasil penting yang dicapai selama perundingan ialah pembentukan tim pemantau bersama.
One important result achieved during the negotiations is the formation of a joint monitoring team. (formal)
Kebiasaan membuang sampah ke sungai merupakan penyebab utama penyumbatan saluran di kawasan itu.
The habit of dumping waste into the river is the main cause of blocked drains in that area. (formal)
The linker reduces a temporary misreading: without it, readers may initially absorb the first word of the predicate as another modifier inside the long subject. Spoken Indonesian can resolve that boundary through intonation; edited prose often chooses explicit linking.
Nominal complements are the natural home
All three forms strongly favor an equation with a nominal or nominalized complement. They are not general-purpose copulas before adjectives and locations.
Ruang arsip itu sangat lembap sepanjang musim hujan.
That records room is very damp throughout the rainy season.
Kantor cabang kami di sebelah gedung pengadilan.
Our branch office is beside the courthouse.
Pak Bimo kepala baru unit pelayanan itu.
Mr. Bimo is the new head of that service unit. (neutral)
Only the last is a nominal identification that could become Pak Bimo adalah kepala baru unit pelayanan itu in a more formal presentation. Sangat lembap is adjectival and di sebelah gedung pengadilan is prepositional; neither needs an overt linker.
Formal speech versus edited prose
In a prepared lecture, announcement, or institutional meeting, adalah, ialah, and merupakan can help listeners parse long information. In spontaneous conversation, shorter zero-copula clauses are usually more natural.
Topik pembahasan kita hari ini adalah pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga.
Our topic today is household waste management. (formal)
Topik kita hari ini pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga.
Our topic today is household waste management. (careful spoken)
Ini merupakan kesempatan terakhir untuk mengajukan keberatan.
This is the final opportunity to submit an objection. (formal)
Ini kesempatan terakhir untuk mengajukan keberatan.
This is the last chance to submit an objection. (neutral spoken)
Edited prose should still avoid needless repetition. A paragraph in which every nominal clause contains adalah becomes heavy. Use an explicit linker when definition, focus, length, or genre motivates it.
What this construction does not express
These forms do not by themselves mean “become.” A transition uses menjadi. A role attached to another event can use sebagai.
Setelah pemilihan, Rani menjadi ketua koperasi.
After the election, Rani became the cooperative chair.
Rani berbicara sebagai wakil kelompok nelayan.
Rani spoke as the representative of the fishers' group.
Replacing either highlighted relationship with adalah would erase the change-of-state or role meaning. Those constructions are intentionally left to adjacent pages.
Orthography in formal prose
Write adalah and ialah as independent words. Write derived merupakan solid. Common nouns inside definitions remain lowercase unless they begin a sentence or form part of a proper name.
Ekologi adalah ilmu tentang hubungan makhluk hidup dengan lingkungannya.
Ecology is the science of relationships between living things and their environment. (academic)
Dokumen tersebut merupakan Peraturan Bupati Sikka Nomor 4 Tahun 2025.
The document is Sikka Regent Regulation Number 4 of 2025. (formal)
The proper title is capitalized; the common definition ilmu tentang hubungan... is not.
Common Mistakes
Combining two linkers

This survey result forms the basis of our decision. (formal)

❌ Ruang penyimpanannya adalah sempit dan lembap.
Incorrect — ordinary adjectives predicate directly.

The storage room is narrow and damp.

Incorrect — merupakan does not introduce a location predicate.
✅ Lokasi rapat di gedung serbaguna.
The meeting location is in the multipurpose building.

Incorrect analysis — ialah is not selected by third-person agreement.
✅ Adalah dan ialah tidak berubah menurut orang atau jumlah subjek.
Adalah and ialah do not change according to the subject's person or number.
