Indonesian meN- actor voice presents a clause from the actor or subject's side of an event. In Rina membaca buku, the sentence starts with Rina and tells what she does. The prefix also helps form the verb, changing shape according to the first sound of its base.
This page introduces the neutral clause pattern and the main surface forms. Detailed allomorphy belongs to the meN- formation guide; the following actor-voice pages handle argument order, discourse choice, and aspect. The capital N is linguistic notation, not a letter you write in an Indonesian word.
The neutral actor-oriented clause
The most familiar transitive pattern is:
actor subject + meN- verb + object
Rina membaca buku di ruang tamu.
Rina reads a book in the living room.
Ali menulis surat untuk neneknya.
Ali writes a letter to his grandmother.
Dimas mengambil kunci dari meja.
Dimas takes the key from the table.
Petugas menyapu lantai setelah toko tutup.
The worker sweeps the floor after the shop closes.
The first noun phrase is the subject and the actor-oriented starting point. With these four transitive verbs, the following noun phrase is the object affected, created, selected, or handled by the action.
Required form-and-function table
| Base | Actor-voice phrase | Form | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| baca | membaca buku | mem- before b | actor reads an object |
| tulis | menulis surat | men-; initial t is absent | actor creates written material |
| ambil | mengambil kunci | meng- before a vowel | actor takes an object |
| sapu | menyapu lantai | meny-; initial s is absent | actor sweeps a surface |
Saya membaca buku itu setiap malam.
I read that book every night.
Kakak menulis surat lamaran di laptop.
My older sibling writes an application letter on a laptop.
Tolong tunggu; saya sedang mengambil kunci mobil.
Please wait; I am getting the car key.
Mereka menyapu lantai aula sebelum acara dimulai.
They sweep the hall floor before the event begins.
The prefix is attached in every actual word: membaca, menulis, mengambil, menyapu. Do not insert a space or hyphen.
Why the nasal changes
The notation meN- represents a family of surface shapes. The nasal adjusts to the first sound of the base, and initial p, t, s, or k often disappears in a productive native pattern.
| Common shape | Model | Result |
|---|---|---|
| mem- | baca; pilih | membaca; memilih |
| men- | duga; tulis | menduga; menulis |
| meny- | sapu | menyapu |
| meng- | ambil; kirim | mengambil; mengirim |
| me- | lihat; rasa | melihat; merasa |
| menge- | cat | mengecat |
Kami memilih tempat duduk dekat jendela.
We choose seats near the window.
Kurir mengirim paket itu sore ini.
The courier sends that package this afternoon.
Saya melihat busnya dari kejauhan.
I see the bus from a distance.
Paman mengecat pagar belakang pada hari Sabtu.
Uncle paints the back fence on Saturday.
There are loans, consonant clusters, short bases, and lexical exceptions that require more detail. At A1, learn the four required models securely and use the dedicated formation page for the full system.
meN- does not mark tense
The word membaca remains unchanged across time. Context and separate time or aspect expressions supply the interpretation.
Kemarin Rina membaca buku itu di kereta.
Yesterday Rina read that book on the train.
Sekarang Rina sedang membaca buku itu.
Rina is reading that book now.
Besok Rina akan membaca buku berikutnya.
Tomorrow Rina will read the next book.
The verb has no past, present, or future ending. Kemarin, sedang, and akan do the temporal work, while membaca keeps actor voice.
Transitive and intransitive meN- clauses
Many common actor-voice verbs are transitive and can take an object.
Maya membaca pesan dari ibunya.
Maya reads a message from her mother.
Petugas mengambil formulir yang sudah ditandatangani.
The clerk takes the form that has already been signed.
Other meN- verbs are intransitive. Their subject participates in an event, but no direct object follows.
Adik menangis karena es krimnya jatuh.
My younger sibling cries because the ice cream fell.
Air mengalir ke selokan di belakang rumah.
Water flows into the drain behind the house.
Daun jati mulai menguning menjelang musim kemarau.
Teak leaves begin to turn yellow as the dry season approaches.
“Actor voice” is a convenient name for the viewpoint, not a promise that every subject acts deliberately. Air does not intend to flow, and leaves do not choose to turn yellow. The construction still presents their event or change from the subject side.
Objects normally follow the verb
In an unmarked clause, keep the object after the transitive meN- verb.
Nadia menulis alamatnya di buku catatan.
Nadia writes the address in her notebook.
Budi mengambil kuncinya dari dalam tas.
Budi takes the key from inside the bag.
The clitic -nya attaches to its host: alamatnya, kuncinya. It is not written as a separate word. If the patient becomes the topic at the front, Indonesian normally changes voice rather than simply moving the object around meN-.
Buku itu dibaca Rina sebelum kelas.
That book is read by Rina before class.
Buku itu sudah saya baca.
I have already read that book.
These are patient-oriented alternatives. Their full syntax belongs to the later choice and argument pages.
Actor orientation and discourse focus
Choose meN- when the actor is the natural center of the clause: answering who did something, continuing a story about a person, or introducing what that person does next.
Apa yang dilakukan Sari setelah sarapan? Dia membaca berita lalu menulis daftar belanja.
What does Sari do after breakfast? She reads the news and then writes a shopping list.
Petugas itu mengambil kunci, membuka gudang, lalu menyapu lantai.
The worker takes the key, opens the storeroom, and then sweeps the floor.
The repeated subject is understood after the first verb. The sequence remains actor-oriented because the narrative follows the worker's actions.
Definite objects are completely possible in actor voice:
Rina membaca buku tersebut sampai bab terakhir.
Rina reads that book through the final chapter.
The demonstrative itu does not force a passive. Voice choice depends on what the discourse is about, not definiteness alone.
Some actor-subject clauses have no meN-
Indonesian also has common bare predicates such as makan, minum, tidur, and pergi. Do not add meN- simply because the subject is an actor.
Kami makan di warung sebelum pergi ke stasiun.
We eat at a food stall before going to the station.
Anak-anak tidur lebih awal malam ini.
The children sleep earlier tonight.
Conversely, baca and tulis appear bare in commands and object voice:
Baca surat ini sebelum rapat.
Read this letter before the meeting.
Surat ini saya tulis untuk keluarga di kampung.
I wrote this letter for my family back home.
These forms do not make meN- optional everywhere. In careful actor-oriented prose, use saya membaca and saya menulis.
Formal prose and casual omission
Full meN- forms are normal in both conversation and writing. Some casual varieties also reduce or omit the prefix with familiar verbs.
Saya sedang membaca pesan Anda dan akan menjawabnya segera.
I am reading your message and will answer it shortly. (formal)
Aku lagi baca pesanmu; bentar lagi kujawab.
I'm reading your message; I'll answer in a moment. (informal)
The second sentence is natural casual Indonesian, but it is not a model for an application letter or report. Retain meN- unless a known construction—such as an imperative or object voice—or the chosen informal variety licenses the bare form.
Orthography checkpoints
Write the prefix solid: membaca, not mem baca. Write aspect and modal markers separately: sedang membaca, akan menulis. Passive di- also attaches—dibaca—while locative di remains separate: di rumah, di lantai.
Rina sedang membaca buku di rumah.
Rina is reading a book at home.
Here sedang is separate, membaca is one word, and locative di rumah consists of two words.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an English-style copula before the verb
❌ Rina adalah membaca majalah di ruang tunggu.
Incorrect transfer from English ‘is reading’—an Indonesian verbal predicate does not need adalah.
✅ Rina membaca majalah di ruang tunggu.
Rina reads a magazine in the waiting room.
2. Writing the abstract label literally
❌ Saya meN-baca berita setiap pagi.
Incorrect—meN- is notation, not the surface spelling.
✅ Saya membaca berita setiap pagi.
I read the news every morning.
3. Preserving a substituted consonant
❌ Tia mentulis surat sambil menunggu kereta.
Incorrect—the initial t of tulis is absent in menulis.
✅ Tia menulis surat sambil menunggu kereta.
Tia writes a letter while waiting for the train.
4. Separating a voice prefix
❌ Petugas sedang menyapu lantai yang di bersihkan kemarin.
Incorrect spacing—the passive prefix in dibersihkan attaches to the verb.
✅ Petugas sedang menyapu lantai yang dibersihkan kemarin.
The worker is sweeping the floor that was cleaned yesterday.
5. Omitting meN- indiscriminately in formal prose
❌ Dalam laporan resmi itu, sekretaris baca surat lalu tulis jawabannya.
Incorrect in edited Standard Indonesian—the actor-oriented predicates require full membaca and menulis here.
✅ Sekretaris membaca surat lalu menulis jawabannya.
The secretary reads the letter and then writes the reply. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- MeN- chooses an actor- or subject-oriented viewpoint; it does not encode time.
- The neutral transitive order is actor subject + meN- verb + object.
- Learn the core forms membaca, menulis, mengambil, and menyapu, then study the full nasal system separately.
- Actor-voice verbs may be transitive or intransitive, and their subjects need not act deliberately.
- Full meN- forms are standard; bare roots are licensed by particular lexical families, constructions, and informal varieties.
