meN-: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register

Knowing that tulis forms menulis is only the beginning. You must also know who writes, whether an object follows, what happens when that object becomes the topic, which larger affixed forms compete with menulis, and whether casual speech prefers nulis or bare tulis in that setting.

MeN- is best learned as a productive schema plus lexical families. The schema predicts many actor-oriented verbs; each family stores its normal arguments, collocations, exceptions, and register variants. This page focuses on those usage choices. It does not repeat the surface formation rules or the derivational meaning map.

Transitive meN- verbs organize actor and object

In a neutral actor-oriented clause, the actor subject comes first, followed by the meN- verb and then its direct object.

Nadia membaca laporan keuangan sebelum rapat.

Nadia reads the financial report before the meeting.

Arif menulis catatan di ponselnya.

Arif writes a note on his phone.

Petugas menyapu lantai aula setelah acara.

The worker sweeps the hall floor after the event.

Saya mengambil pesanan di kasir.

I pick up the order at the cashier.

Mereka mengecat dinding kantor dengan warna putih.

They are painting the office wall white.

These verbs have two central participants: an actor and an affected or selected object. English also places subject before verb and object after it, so the basic order feels familiar. The major difference is that Indonesian changes the verb form when discourse chooses an object-oriented construction.

💡
Learn the whole frame, not only the word: seseorang membaca sesuatu, seseorang mengambil sesuatu, seseorang mengecat permukaan.

A verb's object may be omitted when recoverable

Transitive potential does not mean the object must be pronounced in every sentence. A known object can remain implicit when the conversation supplies it.

A: Nadia masih membaca laporan itu? B: Ya, dia masih membaca.

A: Is Nadia still reading that report? B: Yes, she is still reading.

Dia suka menulis sebelum tidur.

She likes to write before bed.

The first answer omits the understood report. The second presents writing as an activity without specifying a text. This does not turn meN- into an intransitive marker; it shows that lexical valency and overt expression are different questions.

Other meN- verbs are lexically intransitive and do not introduce a direct object at all.

Anak itu menangis sampai tertidur.

The child cried until falling asleep.

Air mengalir melalui pipa di bawah lantai.

Water flows through a pipe under the floor.

When the object becomes the discourse center

If the object is placed first as topic, Indonesian normally selects an object-oriented pattern rather than retaining the meN- verb unchanged.

Laporan itu dibaca oleh Nadia sebelum rapat.

That report was read by Nadia before the meeting.

Laporan itu sudah saya baca.

I have already read that report.

Compare the actor-oriented clause:

Saya sudah membaca laporan itu.

I have already read that report.

With a third-person actor, di- commonly marks the object-oriented verb. With a first- or second-person pronominal actor, the actor precedes the bare base in the familiar type-2 pattern: saya baca, not saya membaca. The full voice system is covered in choosing meN- voice.

Relative clauses inside noun phrases

The same voice contrast appears inside noun phrases. An actor relative clause can retain meN- because the relativized noun is the actor. When the relativized noun is the object and a pronoun actor is expressed, the base appears without meN-.

Orang yang membaca laporan itu adalah kepala divisi.

The person who is reading that report is the division head.

Laporan yang saya baca tadi pagi masih perlu diperbaiki.

The report that I read this morning still needs revision.

Catatan yang ditulis Arif sudah dibagikan kepada semua peserta.

The notes written by Arif have been distributed to all participants.

In orang yang membaca laporan, the head noun orang is the reader. In laporan yang saya baca, the head noun laporan is what was read. English keeps read unchanged in both; Indonesian voice choice reveals the noun's role.

MeN- verb phrases can also occur as dependents within a larger noun phrase:

Kegiatan membaca bersama dimulai pukul sembilan.

The group reading activity starts at nine.

Cara menulis alamat pada paket dijelaskan di halaman terakhir.

The way to write the address on a package is explained on the last page.

Here kegiatan and cara are the noun-phrase heads. Membaca and menulis remain verbal material describing the activity or method; Indonesian has not turned them into English-style inflected gerunds.

Competition with -kan and -i

A bare meN- verb may compete with a larger form containing -kan or -i. Those suffixes can change which participant is highlighted or added, so they are not decorative variants.

Tolong tulis nama lengkapmu di sini.

Please write your full name here.

Petugas menuliskan nomor antrean pada kartu kecil.

The clerk writes the queue number down on a small card.

Anak-anak menulisi papan itu dengan pesan perpisahan.

The children cover the board with farewell messages.

Menulis profiles writing. Menuliskan commonly profiles producing or putting down particular content. Menulisi makes the location or surface prominent and often suggests writing on it repeatedly or extensively. Real lexical preferences matter; do not add a suffix merely because an English sentence has another noun.

Saya mengambil obat di apotek.

I pick up the medicine at the pharmacy.

Saya mengambilkan obat untuk ibu di apotek.

I pick up the medicine for Mom at the pharmacy.

In mengambilkan, the added beneficiary ibu is central to the event. The valency-change guide develops these alternations across more verb families.

Lexicalized families and nonautomatic formations

A productive rule does not license every imaginable verb. Established words have histories and collocations of their own. Meninggal means “die/pass away,” whereas tinggal means “remain, stay, live.” Mempunyai “have” preserves p as a lexicalized high-frequency form rather than following the most basic substitution prediction.

Neneknya meninggal tahun lalu setelah lama sakit.

Her grandmother passed away last year after a long illness.

Neneknya tinggal bersama keluarga di Bogor.

Her grandmother lives with family in Bogor.

Apartemen itu mempunyai dua kamar tidur dan satu balkon kecil.

That apartment has two bedrooms and a small balcony.

An especially revealing contrast is mengaji versus mengkaji. In widespread contemporary usage, mengaji means reciting or studying the Quran (religious/neutral), while mengkaji means examining or studying a topic and is common in formal and academic prose.

Anak-anak mengaji di musala setelah magrib.

The children study Quran recitation at the prayer room after sunset prayer.

Tim peneliti mengkaji dampak kebijakan itu terhadap petani kecil.

The research team examines the policy's impact on small farmers. (academic)

The preserved k helps distinguish an established learned verb from a lexicalized religious verb. This is not derivable from one sound rule alone.

💡
A dictionary-listed form is evidence that the word exists, not proof that every part of its modern meaning is predictable. Record its usual complements and register too.

Collocations constrain interpretation

Even a transparent verb can develop preferred combinations. Mengambil keputusan means “make a decision,” mengambil gambar can mean “take a picture,” and mengambil langkah means “take steps/action.” These combinations are conventional lexical knowledge.

Direksi mengambil keputusan setelah mempertimbangkan semua risiko.

The board makes a decision after considering all the risks.

Fotografer mengambil gambar saat cahaya pagi masih lembut.

The photographer takes pictures while the morning light is still soft.

Pemerintah daerah mengambil langkah darurat untuk menyediakan air bersih.

The local government takes emergency action to provide clean water. (formal)

Do not assume that every English use of take maps to mengambil, or that every object can combine with a familiar meN- verb.

Formal and conversational realizations

Careful Standard Indonesian normally retains meN- in reports, presentations, news, and academic prose. It is also fully natural in conversation. Some casual varieties additionally use a bare base or a reduced nasal form such as nulis, nyapu, ngambil, and ngecat (informal; especially urban/Jakarta-influenced speech).

Dalam laporan pagi, petugas membaca instruksi, menulis hasil pemeriksaan, menyapu ruang arsip, mengambil sampel cat, dan mengecat garis pembatas.

In the morning report, the officer reads the instructions, writes the inspection results, sweeps the archive room, takes a paint sample, and paints the boundary line. (formal)

Tadi petugasnya baca instruksi, nulis hasilnya, nyapu ruang arsip, ngambil sampel cat, terus ngecat garis pembatas.

Earlier the officer read the instructions, wrote down the results, swept the archive room, took a paint sample, and then painted the boundary line. (informal, urban colloquial)

The second sentence is a conversational paraphrase, not a spelling model for a formal report. Reduced forms differ regionally, and many speakers retain full membaca or menulis even in relaxed speech.

Saya lagi baca pesanmu; tunggu sebentar, ya.

I'm reading your message; wait a moment, okay. (informal)

Saya sedang membaca pesan Anda; mohon tunggu sebentar.

I am reading your message; please wait a moment. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Retaining meN- in a pronoun-agent object relative

❌ Buku yang saya membaca kemarin sangat menarik.

Incorrect—the relativized noun is the object, so saya precedes the bare base baca.

✅ Buku yang saya baca kemarin sangat menarik.

The book I read yesterday was very interesting.

2. Adding an English-style preposition before a direct object

❌ Nadia membaca tentang laporan keuangan itu.

Incorrect for ‘Nadia reads the financial report’—the report is a direct object.

✅ Nadia membaca laporan keuangan itu.

Nadia reads that financial report.

3. Coining a denominal verb merely because English allows one

❌ Saya melampu kamar agar lebih terang.

Nonstandard coinage—lampu does not freely form this verb for ‘light the room.’

✅ Saya menyalakan lampu di kamar agar lebih terang.

I turn on the light in the room to make it brighter.

4. Treating meninggal as transparently equivalent to tinggal

❌ Paman saya meninggal di Bandung sejak 2018.

Incorrect for ‘has lived’—meninggal means ‘died.’

✅ Paman saya tinggal di Bandung sejak 2018.

My uncle has lived in Bandung since 2018.

5. Inventing a hybrid casual prefix

❌ Tadi saya mengngambil sampelnya di meja.

Incorrect hybrid form—the reduced form is ngambil, not mengngambil.

✅ Tadi saya ngambil sampelnya di meja.

I picked up the sample from the table earlier.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn each meN- verb with its actor, object or complement, collocations, and register.
  • Object-oriented clauses and object relative clauses often replace meN- with di- or the bare base.
  • -kan and -i can reshape valency; they are not interchangeable decorations.
  • Productive formation coexists with lexicalized words such as meninggal, mempunyai, mengaji, and mengkaji.
  • Full meN- forms are standard across careful registers; bare and reduced variants are context- and region-sensitive conversational options.
