The notation peN- represents a family of noun-forming prefixes whose nasal changes according to the beginning of the base. It yields surface forms such as penulis “writer,” pembaca “reader,” penyapu “sweeper,” and pengajar “instructor”—never a written form containing literal capital N. The phonology is systematic, but which derivative Indonesian actually lexicalizes is not always predictable; the meanings of peN- nouns are mapped separately.
The canonical template
The broad formation is peN- + base → participant or instrument noun associated with the base event. Many bases are verbal roots: tulis “write,” baca “read,” and ajar “teach.” Dictionaries normally organize the family under the base, so an advanced learner should be able to recover tulis from penulis and sapu from penyapu.
The nasal N is an abstract placeholder. At the morpheme boundary, it assimilates to the base's initial sound. With certain voiceless stops, the initial consonant itself disappears—a process often called nasal substitution.
| Analysis | Surface form | Change | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| peN- + tulis | penulis | t → ∅; N → n | writer / author |
| peN- + baca | pembaca | N → m | reader |
| peN- + sapu | penyapu | s → ∅; N → ny | sweeper |
| peN- + ajar | pengajar | N → ng | instructor |
| peN- + pilih | pemilih | p → ∅; N → m | voter / selector |
| peN- + olah | pengolah | N → ng | processor |

The new instructor once lived in Bandung.
Setiap pemilih menerima satu surat suara.
Each voter receives one ballot.
Pengolah makanan wajib menjaga kebersihan peralatan.

The productive allomorphs
pem-: labial beginnings
Before b, f, and v, the prefix normally surfaces as pem- and the base consonant remains: pembaca from baca, pemfitnah from fitnah, pemvonis from vonis. Before a simple base-initial p, the p normally disappears: pilih → pemilih, potong → pemotong.
Pemotong kertas itu harus dijauhkan dari anak-anak.
That paper cutter must be kept away from children.
Pemfitnah dapat dimintai pertanggungjawaban.
A slanderer can be held accountable. (formal)
pen-: dental and alveopalatal beginnings
Before d, c, and j, use pen- and retain the initial: pendengar, pencari, penjahit. Before simple initial t, the t normally disappears: tulis → penulis, tarik → penarik. Some relatively recent loans beginning with other consonants vary lexically, so their derivatives must be checked rather than forced into this core pattern.
Pendengar radio itu menelepon saat acara berlangsung.
That radio listener called while the program was on.
Penjahit langganan saya pindah ke toko sebelah.
My regular tailor moved to the shop next door.
Penarik becak itu berteduh ketika hujan mulai deras.
The pedicab driver took shelter when the rain became heavy.
peny-: initial s
Before a simple initial s, the s disappears and the prefix surfaces as peny-: sapu → penyapu, sewa → penyewa, saring → penyaring. Orthographic ny represents one palatal nasal sound; do not insert the deleted s after it.
Penyewa harus melapor jika ada kerusakan.
Tenants must report any damage. (formal)
Penyaring air ini perlu diganti setiap enam bulan.
This water filter needs to be replaced every six months.
peng-: vowels, velars, and h
Before a vowel, g, or h, the usual surface form is peng-, with the base beginning retained: pengajar, pengolah, penggali, penghuni. Before simple initial k, the k normally disappears: kirim → pengirim, karang → pengarang.
Penghuni apartemen diminta tidak membuat keributan setelah pukul sepuluh.
Apartment residents are asked not to make noise after ten. (formal)
Pengirim paket itu lupa mencantumkan nomor telepon.
The sender of the package forgot to include a phone number.
Pengarang cerita itu terinspirasi oleh pengalaman masa kecilnya.
The author of the story was inspired by her childhood experiences.
pe-: sonorants and lexical formations
Before many bases beginning with l, r, w, y, m, n, ny, or ng, no extra nasal segment appears beyond what the base already contains. Compare pelari from lari, perawat from rawat, pewarna from warna, pemain from main, and penasihat from nasihat. Surface spelling can conceal the boundary: in pemain, for example, m begins the base main. Similarly, penyanyi is conventionally related to nyanyi; its ny belongs to the base rather than replacing an s.
Pelari itu memperlambat langkahnya menjelang garis finis.
The runner slowed down as she approached the finish line.
Perawat akan memeriksa tekanan darah Anda.
The nurse will check your blood pressure.
Pewarna makanan ini berasal dari kunyit.
This food coloring comes from turmeric.
Penyanyi utama belum naik ke panggung.
The lead singer has not come onstage yet.
penge-: many monosyllabic bases
Many one-syllable bases preserve their shape by taking penge-: cat → pengecat, bom → pengebom, cek → pengecek. This pattern is productive, especially with short loans, but it has lexical variation. Do not infer the form from syllable count alone when a conventional derivative is available; verify it in a dictionary.
Pengecat rumah itu membawa tangga sendiri.
The house painter brought his own ladder.
Pengecek fakta menemukan dua angka yang keliru.
The fact-checker found two incorrect figures.
Root restrictions and complex bases
PeN- most readily profiles a participant or instrument associated with a dynamic event. It is not a general prefix meaning “person connected with X,” and it cannot attach freely to every noun or adjective. Some apparently related nouns are built from a prefixed verb base or have been conventionalized through a different pattern.
For example, pengajar aligns transparently with mengajar, but the common word for “student” is pelajar, related historically and lexically to belajar, not a mechanically generated pengajar meaning. The professional boxer is petinju, although the verb “punch” is meninju. The ordinary noun “worker” is pekerja, not a form obtained by blindly matching mengerjakan.
Pelajar asing itu mengikuti kelas bahasa Indonesia.
The international student attends an Indonesian class.
Petinju itu berlatih enam kali seminggu.
The boxer trains six times a week.
Para pekerja sedang memasang atap baru.
The workers are installing a new roof.
These are not random defects in the sound rules. They show that derivation has two layers: regular phonological realization and selection of an established lexical base and affix pattern.
The parallel with meN-
When a lexical family uses both prefixes productively, peN- and active verbal meN- usually display parallel nasal substitution.
| Base | meN- verb | peN- noun |
|---|---|---|
| tulis | menulis | penulis |
| baca | membaca | pembaca |
| sapu | menyapu | penyapu |
| ajar | mengajar | pengajar |
Pengajar itu mengajar kelas malam.
That instructor teaches an evening class.
Penulis itu sedang menulis buku keduanya.
That author is writing her second book.
The parallel helps recognition, but it is not a license to replace meN- mechanically with peN-. A verb may lack a common peN- noun, or a lexical competitor may dominate. Meaning and conventional vocabulary remain decisive.
Common Mistakes
Writing the abstract symbol as part of the word
❌ PeNtulis itu terkenal.
Incorrect — N is an abstract notation, not a letter in an Indonesian word.
✅ Penulis itu terkenal.
That writer is famous.
Choosing an allomorph by spelling resemblance alone
❌ Penbaca koran itu duduk di teras.
Incorrect — before b, peN- surfaces as pem-.
✅ Pembaca koran itu duduk di teras.
The newspaper reader is sitting on the terrace.
Restoring a consonant deleted by nasal substitution
❌ Pentulis laporan itu belum datang.
Incorrect — initial t disappears in peN- + tulis.
✅ Penulis laporan itu belum datang.
The writer of the report has not arrived yet.
❌ Pensapu halaman itu sedang istirahat.
Incorrect — initial s disappears in peN- + sapu.
✅ Penyapu halaman itu sedang istirahat.
The yard sweeper is taking a break.
Ignoring penge- with a short base
❌ Pengcat itu belum selesai mengecat pagar.
Incorrect — the established derivative from monosyllabic cat is pengecat.
✅ Pengecat itu belum selesai mengecat pagar.
The painter has not finished painting the fence.
Assuming perfect lexical identity with meN-
❌ Peninju itu akan bertanding malam ini.
Nonstandard for the established profession — Indonesian conventionally uses petinju.
✅ Petinju itu akan bertanding malam ini.
The boxer will compete tonight.
Key Takeaways
- PeN- is an abstract label; actual words contain pem-, pen-, peny-, peng-, pe-, or penge-.
- Initial p, t, s, and k are normally deleted in the relevant productive pattern; show them in analysis, not in the surface spelling.
- PeN- often parallels meN- phonologically, but derivational vocabulary is not a mechanical prefix swap.
- Recover the base to understand and look up a word, then verify that the conventional noun and sense actually exist.
