peN-: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register

Once tulis has formed penulis, the new noun inherits a relationship to the writing event: it profiles the writer, while the text written may remain as a following complement in penulis novel itu. The same architecture appears in pembaca berita, penyapu jalan, and pengajar bahasa Indonesia, but lexical convention decides whether the noun names a one-time participant, a profession, a device, or an established social role.

PeN- is therefore best learned as a productive schema plus lexical families. This page covers argument structure, competition with neighboring nominalizers, lexicalized exceptions, and register. It does not repeat the allomorphy rules or the semantic network. In analysis write peN- + tulis; in actual Indonesian write penulis solid.

How an event becomes a noun phrase

An active clause contains an actor and, for a transitive verb, an object. A peN- noun packages the actor or another characteristic participant as the head of a noun phrase. The remaining participant can follow the head directly.

Active clauseParticipant noun phraseWhat is profiled
Rina menulis novel itu.penulis novel ituthe writer
Warga membaca koran.pembaca koranthe reader
Petugas menyapu jalan.penyapu jalanthe sweeper
Dosen mengajar linguistik.pengajar linguistikthe instructor

Rina menulis novel itu selama hampir tiga tahun.

Rina wrote that novel over nearly three years.

Penulis novel itu akan hadir dalam diskusi malam ini.

The author of that novel will attend tonight's discussion.

Dosen baru itu mengajar linguistik historis.

That new lecturer teaches historical linguistics.

Pengajar linguistik historis itu baru kembali dari penelitian lapangan.

That historical-linguistics instructor has just returned from fieldwork.

The base event's actor is already represented by the noun itself. Penulis novel itu does not need a separate word meaning “person who.” English uses writer of that novel, inserting of; Indonesian normally lets the complement follow directly.

💡
Read a peN- noun phrase from its head outward: first identify the participant (penulis), then ask what following material specifies their event, field, object, or institution.

Direct complements and ordinary modifiers

A noun immediately after a peN- head can fill a role inherited from the base verb:

Pembaca berita itu memeriksa pelafalan nama narasumber sebelum siaran.

The newsreader checks the pronunciation of the interviewee's name before the broadcast.

Penyapu jalan mengenakan rompi pemantul cahaya pada malam hari.

The street sweeper wears a reflective vest at night.

Pengajar bahasa Indonesia menyiapkan contoh dari percakapan sehari-hari.

The Indonesian-language instructor prepares examples from everyday conversation.

Yet not every following phrase is inherited argument structure. In penulis dari Makassar, dari Makassar gives the writer's origin. In pembaca di ruang depan, the locative says where the readers are. Context and the base verb distinguish an event participant from an ordinary modifier.

Penulis dari Makassar itu sedang mengikuti residensi di Jakarta.

That writer from Makassar is attending a residency in Jakarta.

Pembaca di ruang depan diminta mengecilkan suara ponsel.

Readers in the front room are asked to lower their phone volume.

Long noun phrases can be structurally ambiguous. Penulis novel sejarah baru itu may mean “the writer of that new historical novel” or, less readily, “that new writer of historical novels.” Careful prose can move or expand modifiers.

Penulis baru itu telah menerbitkan sebuah novel sejarah.

That new writer has published a historical novel.

Penulis novel sejarah yang baru terbit itu akan diwawancarai besok.

The author of the newly published historical novel will be interviewed tomorrow.

Competition within a lexical family

PeN- usually profiles a participant or instrument. Neighboring morphology may instead profile a product, material, or process.

FamilyParticipantProduct/materialProcess/event
tulispenulistulisanpenulisan
bacapembacabacaanpembacaan
sapupenyapusapuanpenyapuan
ajarpengajarajaran/pelajaranpengajaran

Penulis itu menyerahkan tulisan terakhirnya kepada editor.

The writer submitted her latest piece to the editor.

Penulisan laporan akhir memerlukan data tambahan.

Writing the final report requires additional data.

Pembaca diminta menyelesaikan bacaan sebelum pembahasan dimulai.

Readers are asked to finish the assigned reading before the discussion begins.

Pembacaan puisi akan dimulai setelah sambutan pembuka.

The poetry reading will begin after the opening remarks.

Penyapu aula mulai bekerja setelah semua tamu pulang.

The hall sweeper starts work after all the guests leave.

Penyapuan aula dilakukan setelah semua tamu pulang.

The sweeping of the hall is done after all the guests leave.

Pengajar itu sedang mengevaluasi metode pengajaran baru.

The instructor is evaluating a new teaching method.

These contrasts are not a perfectly productive grid. Pelajaran usually means a lesson or school subject, while ajaran often means a teaching or doctrine. The dictionary family records lexical choices that morphology alone cannot decide.

A profession, an episode, or a device?

PeN- does not itself encode employment. Pembeli terakhir can be the buyer in one transaction; pembeli tetap is a regular customer. Penulis lepas names an occupation, while penulis surat anonim may identify someone through a single act.

Pembeli terakhir menerima potongan harga tambahan.

The last buyer received an additional discount.

Toko itu memberi layanan khusus kepada pembeli tetap.

That shop provides special service to regular customers.

Ia bekerja sebagai penulis lepas untuk beberapa media.

She works as a freelance writer for several media outlets.

The referent may also be nonhuman when a device reading is established. Pembaca kartu can be a card reader, penyaring air a water filter, and pemotong kertas a paper cutter. Classifiers and predicates reveal the reading.

Sebuah pembaca kartu dipasang di samping pintu laboratorium.

A card reader is installed beside the laboratory door.

Seorang pembaca menunggu perpustakaan dibuka.

A reader is waiting for the library to open.

There is no rule turning every agent noun into a device. Penulis normally denotes a person; an ordinary writing implement is alat tulis, not a machine generically called penulis.

Lexical choice overrides a mechanical derivation

The peN- schema does not authorize every imaginable participant noun. Established competitors frequently win. A student is pelajar, not pengajar; pengajar means instructor. A boxer is petinju, not a mechanically predicted peninju. A worker is pekerja, not pengkerja.

Pelajar itu bertanya kepada pengajar setelah kelas.

The student asked the instructor after class.

Petinju muda itu berlatih bersama pelatih barunya.

The young boxer trains with his new coach.

Para pekerja meninggalkan lokasi proyek sebelum hujan deras.

The workers left the project site before the heavy rain.

Dictionary-listed words may also resist literal decomposition. Pengacara normally means “lawyer,” not “person associated with an event”; an event host is pembawa acara. Pengusaha conventionally means a businessperson or entrepreneur, not anyone who happens to make an effort.

Pengacara itu meminta waktu untuk mempelajari berkas perkara.

The lawyer asked for time to study the case file.

Pembawa acara memperkenalkan pembicara utama.

The host introduces the keynote speaker.

Pengusaha lokal itu membuka dua puluh lapangan kerja baru.

That local entrepreneur created twenty new jobs.

Formal and conversational alternatives

Many peN- nouns are neutral, but compressed role nouns are particularly frequent in journalism, administration, and academic prose. Conversation may choose a familiar occupation word, tukang + noun, or an orang/yang + verb paraphrase.

Dalam kegiatan literasi tersebut, penulis membacakan karyanya kepada pembaca, penyapu membersihkan aula, dan pengajar mendampingi peserta.

At the literacy event, the writer reads her work to the readers, the cleaner sweeps the hall, and the instructor assists the participants. (formal report)

Di acara baca-baca itu, yang nulis bacain ceritanya ke yang datang, tukang sapunya bersihin aula, terus gurunya nemenin peserta.

At that reading event, the writer read the story to the people who came, the cleaner cleaned the hall, and then the teacher accompanied the participants. (informal, Jakarta-influenced)

The conversational paraphrase uses yang nulis, tukang sapu, and guru, not because penulis, penyapu, or pengajar are ungrammatical in speech, but because familiar roles and reduced verbs may sound more immediate. Pembaca remains natural in book discussions; register never replaces lexical judgment.

Penulisnya siapa? Aku suka cara dia bercerita.

Who's the writer? I like the way they tell the story. (informal)

Identitas penulis naskah tersebut belum dapat dikonfirmasi.

The identity of the manuscript's author has not yet been confirmed. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Marking a direct complement with dari

❌ Penulis dari novel itu akan hadir malam ini.

Incorrect for ‘the author of that novel’—dari makes an origin/source reading instead of the inherited complement.

✅ Penulis novel itu akan hadir malam ini.

The author of that novel will attend tonight.

2. Using a participant noun for a product

❌ Saya sedang membaca penulis favoritnya.

Incorrect—the intended object is the written work, not its writer.

✅ Saya sedang membaca tulisan penulis favoritnya.

I am reading a piece by her favorite writer.

3. Coining a peN- noun for any English “one who” expression

❌ Pengkursi di ruang tunggu harus berdiri.

Nonstandard coinage—Indonesian does not derive an ordinary word for ‘sitter’ from kursi this way.

✅ Orang yang duduk di ruang tunggu harus berdiri.

The people sitting in the waiting room must stand up.

4. Treating pengacara as “event host”

❌ Pengacara itu memperkenalkan penyanyi berikutnya di panggung.

Wrong lexical choice for the intended meaning—pengacara normally means lawyer.

✅ Pembawa acara itu memperkenalkan penyanyi berikutnya di panggung.

The host introduces the next singer onstage.

5. Calling an ordinary broom penyapu

❌ Tolong ambil penyapu yang ada di belakang pintu.

Unnatural for an ordinary broom—penyapu normally profiles a sweeper.

✅ Tolong ambil sapu yang ada di belakang pintu.

Please get the broom behind the door.

Key Takeaways

  • A peN- noun profiles a participant or instrument and can inherit a complement from the base event: penulis novel, pembaca berita.
  • Contrast the participant with neighboring products and processes: penulis–tulisan–penulisan.
  • Professional, episodic, habitual, and device readings depend on the lexical family and context.
  • Productive phonology does not guarantee a conventional noun; learn competitors such as pelajar, petinju, and pekerja.
  • Formal role nouns and conversational paraphrases differ in information packaging, not merely correctness.
