Indonesian combines propositions through coordination, subordinate adverbials, selected complements, relative clauses, quotation, and simple juxtaposition. The verbs do not acquire finite versus nonfinite endings when a clause becomes dependent. Instead, conjunctions, complementizers, voice, order, punctuation, and meaning reveal the relationship.
This page is a map of the system rather than an inventory of every conjunction. The practical goal is to identify how one clause depends on another and what communicative relation the combination creates. The main-versus-subordinate guide provides the detailed mobility and scope tests used here.
One proposition expanded six ways
Start with the independent proposition:
Panitia mengubah jadwal acara.
The committee changed the event schedule.
The same proposition can participate in six larger structures.
Coordination: equal discourse status
Panitia mengubah jadwal acara dan para peserta memperbarui rencana perjalanan.
The committee changed the event schedule, and the participants updated their travel plans.
Both clauses make assertions of equal status. Dan adds the second event without labeling it as cause, time, or content.
Adverbial subordination: a setting or relation
Panitia mengubah jadwal acara karena pembicara utama terlambat.
The committee changed the event schedule because the main speaker was delayed.
The karena clause gives a reason for the schedule change. It is subordinate to the main assertion.
Complementation: proposition as selected content
Direktur mengetahui bahwa panitia mengubah jadwal acara.
The director knows that the committee changed the event schedule.
The bahwa clause supplies what the director knows. It fills a content position selected by mengetahui.
Relativization: proposition inside a noun phrase
Panitia yang mengubah jadwal acara akan menjelaskan alasannya sore ini.
The committee that changed the event schedule will explain its reasons this afternoon.
The yang clause modifies panitia. Its understood subject is the head noun.
Quotation: proposition presented as an utterance
Ketua mengumumkan, “Panitia mengubah jadwal acara.”
The chair announced, ‘The committee changed the event schedule.’
Quotation preserves the words as a separate utterance inside the larger report.
Parataxis: relation inferred from adjacency
Pembicara utama terlambat; panitia mengubah jadwal acara.
The main speaker was delayed; the committee changed the event schedule.
The semicolon places two independent propositions side by side. The reader infers a causal or sequential connection, but no conjunction grammatically encodes it.
Dependency diagram

Coordination
Coordination uses expressions such as dan, tetapi, and atau to join parallel units. Each conjunct can have its own subject and predicate, or repeated material can be omitted when roles remain clear.
Maya menyiapkan ruangan dan Deni menguji sistem suara.
Maya prepared the room and Deni tested the sound system.
Maya menyiapkan ruangan lalu memeriksa daftar tamu.
Maya prepared the room and then checked the guest list.
Kami ingin berangkat pagi, tetapi bus pertama baru tiba pukul delapan.
We want to leave early, but the first bus does not arrive until eight.
The second sentence shares Maya across two predicates. The third uses a comma before clause-level tetapi because the second clause contrasts with the first.
Coordination does not by itself express hierarchy. If one event is reason, condition, or purpose, choose a subordinate relation rather than expecting dan to carry it.
Adverbial subordination
An adverbial clause locates the main event in time, reason, condition, purpose, or concession. It often moves between initial and final position.
Setelah semua peserta tiba, panitia membagikan kartu kamar.
After all participants arrived, the committee distributed the room cards.
Panitia membagikan kartu kamar setelah semua peserta tiba.
The committee distributed the room cards after all participants arrived.
Karena aula utama sedang diperbaiki, acara dipindahkan ke gedung sebelah.
Because the main hall is being repaired, the event was moved to the next building.
Kami memasang tanda tambahan agar para tamu tidak tersesat.
We put up additional signs so that the guests would not get lost.
An initial adverbial is normally followed by a comma. A tightly integrated final adverbial normally has no preceding comma.
Complementation
A complement clause supplies content selected by a verb, adjective, or noun. Bahwa explicitly introduces factual or asserted content, while desire and purpose predicates may select agar or an unmarked controlled action.
Ketua menjelaskan bahwa jadwal baru berlaku mulai Senin.
The chair explained that the new schedule takes effect on Monday.
Kami berharap agar layanan kereta segera kembali normal.
We hope that train service will return to normal soon.
Rina ingin menyelesaikan laporan itu sebelum makan siang.
Rina wants to finish the report before lunch.
Kabar bahwa jembatan sudah dibuka membuat warga lega.
The news that the bridge had opened relieved residents.
The controlled action menyelesaikan has the same understood subject as Rina. It needs no infinitive ending or English-style to marker.
Complement clauses are less freely movable than adverbials because a selecting expression licenses their content role.
Relativization
A relative clause follows a noun and normally begins with yang. Voice determines the role of the gap associated with the head noun.
Petugas yang memeriksa tiket kami tadi pagi sangat ramah.
The officer who checked our tickets this morning was very friendly.
Tiket yang kami beli lewat aplikasi sudah tersimpan di ponsel.
The tickets we bought through the app are already saved on the phone.
Penginapan yang kamarnya menghadap laut itu sudah penuh.
The guesthouse whose rooms face the sea is fully booked.
The first head is actor, the second patient in object voice, and the third possessor resumed by attached -nya. Restrictive relatives take no English-style commas.
Pak Rudi, yang baru tiba dari Kupang, akan membuka pertemuan.
Mr. Rudi, who has just arrived from Kupang, will open the meeting.
This relative is parenthetical because Pak Rudi is already identified, so commas are appropriate.
Quotation and reported content
Direct quotation preserves an utterance and takes quotation punctuation. Indirect report integrates content into the reporting clause.
Petugas berkata, “Kereta berikutnya berangkat dari peron lima.”
The officer said, ‘The next train leaves from platform five.’
Petugas mengatakan bahwa kereta berikutnya berangkat dari peron lima.
The officer said that the next train leaves from platform five.
“Silakan menunggu di ruang sebelah,” kata resepsionis.
‘Please wait in the next room,’ the receptionist said.
The quoted wording can contain its own commands, questions, or register. Outside quoted material, this guide uses contemporary Standard Indonesian rather than colloquial spellings.
Parataxis and inferred relations
Parataxis places clauses next to each other without an overt coordinator or subordinator. Speech uses intonation; writing uses a period, semicolon, colon, or dash according to the relation.
Hujan makin deras. Kami memutuskan pulang lebih awal.
The rain grew heavier. We decided to go home early.
Waktunya tinggal sedikit; pembahasan harus segera diselesaikan.
Little time remains; the discussion must be concluded immediately. (formal written)
Satu hal sudah jelas: jadwal lama tidak dapat dipertahankan.
One thing is clear: the old schedule cannot be maintained.
Parataxis is powerful but underspecified. The first sequence suggests cause, yet grammar does not force that reading. Use an overt conjunction when the relation must be explicit.
No finite versus nonfinite verb morphology
The same Indonesian verb shape can appear in an independent clause, complement, relative, or adverbial.
Tim lapangan memeriksa lokasi itu.
The field team examines the site. (independent)
Direktur meminta tim lapangan memeriksa lokasi itu.
The director asks the field team to examine the site. (controlled complement)
Tim lapangan yang memeriksa lokasi itu akan membuat laporan.
The field team that examines the site will prepare a report. (relative)
Sebelum tim lapangan memeriksa lokasi itu, warga diminta menunggu.
Before the field team examines the site, residents are asked to wait. (adverbial)
Memeriksa does not acquire an infinitive, participle, or subordinate conjugation. Linkers and syntactic position identify the relationship.
Common Mistakes
Treating every conjunction as an English one-to-one equivalent
❌ Panitia mengubah jadwal dan pembicara terlambat, jika maksudnya keterlambatan adalah alasan.
Incorrect relation for the intended meaning—and merely coordinates the events.
✅ Panitia mengubah jadwal karena pembicara terlambat.
The committee changed the schedule because the speaker was delayed.
Calling the first clause the main clause automatically
❌ Dalam ‘Setelah rapat selesai, peserta pulang’, setelah rapat selesai adalah klausa utama.
Incorrect—the initial clause is a time adverbial.
✅ Dalam kalimat itu, peserta pulang adalah klausa utama.
In that sentence, peserta pulang is the main clause.
Adding a comma before every final subordinate clause
❌ Kami memindahkan acara, karena atap aula bocor.
Incorrect neutral punctuation—the final reason clause is tightly integrated.
✅ Kami memindahkan acara karena atap aula bocor.
We moved the event because the hall roof was leaking.
Repeating the subject in a controlled complement
❌ Rina ingin Rina menyelesaikan laporan sebelum siang.
Incorrect for ordinary same-subject control—the repeated name is unnecessary.
✅ Rina ingin menyelesaikan laporan sebelum siang.
Rina wants to finish the report before noon.
Using English restrictive-relative commas
❌ Peserta, yang membawa kartu akses, boleh masuk lebih dahulu.
Incorrect for the intended subset—the commas make the relative parenthetical.
✅ Peserta yang membawa kartu akses boleh masuk lebih dahulu.
Participants carrying access cards may enter first.
Key Takeaways
- Coordination joins equal clauses; subordination makes one clause serve as an adverbial, complement, or noun modifier.
- Quotation creates an utterance boundary, while indirect report integrates content.
- Parataxis leaves the relation to discourse inference.
- Indonesian verbs do not mark a finite/nonfinite contrast through conjugational endings; linkers, voice, and position reveal clause status.
- Choose a linker for the Indonesian relationship it builds, not for a presumed one-word English equivalent.
