Reference Chains Across a Text

A reference chain is the sequence of expressions that keeps one participant identifiable across a text: Dokter Maya Pranoto β†’ ia β†’ zero β†’ -nya. Indonesian chains alternate full noun phrases, ia/dia, beliau, mereka, omitted arguments, and attached -nya. Repeating an English pronoun at every clause sounds heavy; dropping every recoverable expression eventually becomes ambiguous.

The choice is both informational and social. A full title can reactivate a less salient person, while beliau maintains deference and ia offers a more neutral written stance. This page focuses on chain management and explicitly leaves demonstratives, full relative-clause syntax, and voice paradigms to dedicated adjacent pages.

Accessibility controls expression size

Speakers normally give more linguistic material when a referent is new, contrastive, or competing with others. They use less when the referent is already the unquestioned center of attention.

FormTypical discourse jobExample
full noun phraseintroduce, contrast, or reactivateDokter Maya Pranoto
ia / diacontinue one salient third personia menjelaskan
beliaucontinue one respected personbeliau menjelaskan
merekacontinue an established human groupmereka sepakat
zerocontinue a maximally accessible argumentlalu Ø menjelaskan
-nyabind a local third-person relationlaporannya

This is a probability system, not a mechanical distance scale. Grammatical role, recency, topic continuity, semantic plausibility, paragraph structure, and respect all influence what a reader retrieves.

πŸ’‘
Use the shortest form that still identifies the intended referent and preserves the intended social stance. When competitors become plausible, restore a name, title, or description.

Introducing and reactivating a participant

A full noun phrase gives the reader enough information to build or reopen a discourse representation. News writing often begins with role plus name, then reduces later mentions.

Dokter Maya Pranoto memimpin tim pemeriksa dari Rumah Sakit Nusa.

Doctor Maya Pranoto led the assessment team from Nusa Hospital.

Setelah dua pejabat lain berbicara, Dokter Maya kembali menjelaskan kondisi rumah sakit.

After two other officials spoke, Doctor Maya explained the hospital's condition again.

The first full phrase introduces Maya. The repeated Dokter Maya in the second example does not reflect bad style: intervening participants have lowered her salience, so the fuller form prevents a wrong retrieval.

English also repeats names at switch points, but it otherwise relies heavily on obligatory he/she/they. Indonesian has more freedom to move directly from a full phrase to zero when continuity is exceptionally strong.

Ia, dia, and register

Both ia and dia can continue a singular human referent as subject. Ia strongly favors written subject position and is frequent in formal narrative or news; dia is broader across registers and can also occur as object or after a preposition.

Maya menyerahkan laporan itu kepada Arif. Ia kemudian menjelaskan temuan utamanya.

Maya handed the report to Arif. She then explained its main findings.

The most recent person is Arif, but ia naturally retrieves Maya because Maya was the preceding subject and continuing actor. Reference resolution is not β€œchoose the nearest noun.”

When the intended referent is not the established topic, use a fuller expression:

Maya menyerahkan laporan itu kepada Arif. Arif kemudian mengajukan tiga pertanyaan.

Maya handed the report to Arif. Arif then asked three questions.

Using bare ia in the second sentence would invite the Maya reading. The repeated name announces a subject switch.

Beliau keeps respect in the chain

Beliau is not merely a more formal-shaped dia. It marks the continuing referent as respected from the speaker or text’s viewpoint.

Profesor Ratna membuka diskusi itu. Beliau mengundang dua peneliti muda untuk menanggapi hasil survei.

Professor Ratna opened the discussion. She invited two young researchers to respond to the survey results. (respectful)

Profesor Ratna membuka diskusi itu. Ia mengundang dua peneliti muda untuk menanggapi hasil survei.

Professor Ratna opened the discussion. She invited two young researchers to respond to the survey results. (formally neutral)

The event structure is the same; the social framing changes. A ceremonial profile may sustain beliau, whereas neutral reporting may prefer ia. Switching back and forth without a discourse reason can make the writer’s stance wobble.

πŸ’‘
A reference chain carries evaluation. Choosing beliau commits the current mention to deference even though the verb remains unchanged.

Zero anaphora: continuity without repetition

Indonesian often omits a subject or object that remains recoverable. Coordinated clauses with the same subject are a particularly safe environment.

Ia menyerahkan laporan kepada menteri, lalu menjelaskan kebutuhan rumah sakit.

She handed the report to the minister and then explained the hospital's needs.

The subject of menjelaskan is unspoken but continues ia. English normally repeats no pronoun after and either, but Indonesian extends omission more widely, including some new clauses and objects, when context is strong.

Laporan itu sudah selesai. Setelah memeriksa sekali lagi, Maya mengirimkannya kepada sekretariat.

The report was finished. After checking it once more, Maya sent it to the secretariat.

The object of memeriksa is zero: the completed report remains obvious. The attached -nya on mengirimkannya then resumes it explicitly. If another document intervened, repeating laporan itu or otherwise expanding the reference would become necessary.

Zero is not a license to make the reader guess. A subject change, new paragraph, quotation, or cluster of same-gender participants often requires a fuller reset. The pronoun omission page treats the syntactic environments in detail.

-nya: compact but number-neutral

Attached -nya can express a third-person possessor or object and can refer to humans or nonhumans, singular or plural. That compactness makes it efficient but also potentially ambiguous.

Maya memeriksa laporannya sebelum menyerahkannya kepada Arif.

Maya checked her report before handing it to Arif.

The first -nya is understood as Maya’s because she is the current possessor-compatible subject; the second resumes laporan as object. A different context could make laporannya mean β€œhis report,” β€œtheir report,” or β€œthe report associated with it.” No gender or number feature inside -nya resolves the issue.

When two possessors compete, expand:

Maya membandingkan laporan Rudi dengan laporan Arif.

Maya compared Rudi's report with Arif's report.

This deliberate repetition is better than two opaque occurrences of laporannya. EYD V always attaches -nya, just as it attaches ku-, kau-, -ku, and -mu: kubaca, kaubaca, laporanku, laporanmu, laporannya.

Mereka establishes a plural human chain

Use mereka after a plural human group has been established. Do not expect it to identify which combination of people is intended when several possible groups are active.

Maya, Arif, dan Rudi menyelesaikan pertemuan pada siang hari. Mereka sepakat bertemu lagi pekan depan.

Maya, Arif, and Rudi finished the meeting at noon. They agreed to meet again next week.

The explicit three-name group provides a clear antecedent. If the previous sentence mentioned Maya with one team and Rudi with another, bare mereka could retrieve several groups. Introduce the desired set as ketiga peserta itu, Maya dan timnya, or another full phrase before reducing it.

Annotated news paragraph: three participants

Read the full paragraph first:

Ia kemudian meminta stafnya menyiapkan data pendukung. Ketiga peserta pertemuan itu sepakat bertemu lagi pekan depan. Mereka akan membahas rencana pengadaan ambulans.

Doctor Maya Pranoto, director of Nusa Hospital, met Health Minister Arif Wibawa in Surabaya on Tuesday morning. She submitted the hospital's preparedness report to Minister Arif and explained that her hospital needed two additional ambulances. Minister Arif said that he would study the report with Rudi Hartono, head of the Surabaya Health Agency. After reading its summary, Rudi judged the proposal urgent. He then asked his staff to prepare supporting data. The three meeting participants agreed to meet again next week. They will discuss the ambulance procurement plan.

The chain contains three people: Maya (A), Arif (B), and Rudi (C).

ExpressionReferentWhy it works
Dokter Maya PranotoAfull first introduction; becomes main topic
Menteri Kesehatan Arif WibawaBfull first introduction in object position
iaAcontinues the preceding subject/topic, not the nearest person
Ø menjelaskanAzero subject continues A inside coordination
rumah sakitnyaA-nya links the hospital to the salient director
Menteri ArifBfuller reset marks a subject switch
beliauBcontinues B while adding respectful stance
Rudi HartonoCfull first introduction
Rudi β†’ ia β†’ stafnyaCname resets the topic; pronoun and clitic then continue it
ketiga peserta ... β†’ merekaA+B+Cfull group phrase constructs the set before plural reduction

The paragraph would be harder to follow if every person became ia immediately, or if every repeated subject disappeared. It deliberately expands at each subject switch and compresses only after salience is secure.

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating an English-style pronoun in every coordinated clause

❌ Ia membuka rapat, lalu ia membaca agenda, kemudian ia menjelaskan aturan diskusi.

Unnatural reference chain β€” mechanically repeated ia overloads an unchanged subject sequence.

βœ… Ia membuka rapat, lalu membaca agenda dan menjelaskan aturan diskusi.

She opened the meeting, then read the agenda and explained the discussion rules.

2. Dropping the subject across a real switch

❌ Maya menemui Rina setelah rapat, lalu menyerahkan laporan kepada direktur.

Misleading if Rina is intended β€” the zero subject normally continues Maya, the preceding subject.

βœ… Maya menemui Rina setelah rapat. Rina lalu menyerahkan laporan kepada direktur.

Maya met Rina after the meeting. Rina then handed the report to the director.

3. Using dia when several singular people compete

❌ Maya berbicara dengan Rina tentang Dedi. Dia akan memimpin proyek itu.

Ambiguous β€” dia could retrieve Maya, Rina, or Dedi.

βœ… Maya berbicara dengan Rina tentang Dedi. Dedi akan memimpin proyek itu.

Maya spoke with Rina about Dedi. Dedi will lead the project.

4. Trusting -nya to identify a possessor

❌ Maya menunjukkan laporan Rina kepada Sari, lalu mengkritik kesimpulannya.

Ambiguous β€” -nya does not show whose conclusion is criticized.

βœ… Maya menunjukkan laporan Rina kepada Sari, lalu mengkritik kesimpulan dalam laporan Rina.

Maya showed Rina's report to Sari, then criticized the conclusion in Rina's report.

Key Takeaways

  • Introduce or reactivate participants with full noun phrases; reduce only when salience supports it.
  • Ia/dia continue singular people, beliau adds respect, and mereka continues an established human group.
  • Zero anaphora is strongest under same-subject continuity; restore a name or title at subject switches.
  • -nya is compact but carries no gender or number feature to resolve competition.
  • Indonesian reference continuity is simultaneously about information management and social positioning.
