Beliau is a respectful third-person singular pronoun. It can translate English he, she, or singular they, but it also presents the referent as worthy of deference. Indonesian thus places honorification inside the pronoun without changing the verb or the rest of the clause.
Use beliau for a respected individual whose identity is established: a senior professional, public figure, teacher, religious leader, mentor, parent, or grandparent when the speaker wishes to mark respect. This page covers that reference choice while leaving demonstratives, full relative-clause syntax, and voice paradigms to adjacent pages.
One pronoun, ordinary syntax
Beliau can occur as a subject, object, complement of a preposition, or possessor. As a full pronoun, it remains a separate word.
| Function | Example phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| subject | beliau datang | he/she comes, respectfully |
| object | menemui beliau | meet him/her, respectfully |
| after a preposition | berbicara dengan beliau | speak with him/her, respectfully |
| possessor | pendapat beliau | his/her opinion, respectfully |
Beliau akan tiba setelah rapat pertama selesai.
He or she will arrive after the first meeting ends. (respectful)
Saya menemui beliau untuk meminta nasihat tentang penelitian saya.
I met with him or her to ask for advice about my research. (respectful)
Keputusan itu dibuat setelah kami berbicara dengan beliau.
That decision was made after we spoke with him or her. (respectful)
Pendapat beliau selalu dipertimbangkan dalam rapat keluarga.
His or her opinion is always considered in family meetings. (respectful)
English normally needs extra wording such as the respected professor to express what beliau contributes. The Indonesian pronoun carries that stance every time it is selected.
No honorific agreement
The predicate after beliau has exactly the same form it would have after dia or ia. Indonesian verbs do not agree for person, gender, number, or honorific rank.
Beliau datang pukul sembilan, sedangkan dia datang setengah jam kemudian.
The respected person arrived at nine, whereas the other person arrived half an hour later.
Both subjects take unchanged datang. Similarly, compare beliau sudah membaca laporan and dia sudah membaca laporan: respect resides in the pronoun, not in a special respectful conjugation of membaca.
Adjectival predicates also remain unchanged:
Walaupun sudah pensiun, beliau tetap aktif mendampingi peneliti muda.
Although retired, he or she remains active in mentoring young researchers. (respectful)
This makes the morphology easy, but the social choice is genuinely difficult. The learner must understand how the speaker positions the referent; English verb grammar offers no shortcut.
In news and public reference
News, speeches, obituaries, institutional profiles, and ceremonial writing may use beliau after first naming a respected public figure. The pronoun marks deference, so a neutral news outlet may instead choose ia, dia, or repeat a title when it wishes to avoid overt reverence.
Wali Kota Bima Kusuma membuka pusat kesehatan itu pada Senin pagi. Dalam sambutannya, beliau menekankan pentingnya layanan pencegahan.
Mayor Bima Kusuma opened the health center on Monday morning. In his address, he emphasized the importance of preventive services. (respectful news style)
Menurut panitia, Profesor Ratna tidak dapat hadir, tetapi beliau telah mengirimkan rekaman pidatonya.
According to the committee, Professor Ratna cannot attend, but she has sent a recording of her speech. (respectful)
Capitalize Wali Kota and Profesor here because each title accompanies a specific personal name. Mid-sentence beliau itself remains lowercase. Anda, by contrast, always begins with a capital letter.
Calling a public figure beliau is not proof that the writer is politically neutral. It is a stance choice. In critical reporting about an accused official, repeated beliau may sound deferential in a way the writer does not intend.
In the workplace
A junior employee can use beliau when speaking about a respected director, supervisor, or senior expert. First establish who the pronoun means.
Saya sudah mengirim draf itu kepada Bu Ratna. Beliau akan memberikan catatan besok pagi.
I've sent the draft to Ms. Ratna. She will provide comments tomorrow morning. (respectful workplace reference)
Pak Damar sedang menerima tamu, jadi kita menemui beliau setelah makan siang saja.
Mr. Damar is receiving a guest, so let's meet with him after lunch instead. (respectful)
Titles used as name-like reference—Bu Ratna, Pak Damar—take capitals. In ordinary kin descriptions such as ibu saya, the kin noun is lowercase.
Among close peers, dia may be more natural even when the colleague is older. A formal job title alone also does not force beliau. The pronoun expresses a chosen respectful relationship, not a rule triggered by an organizational chart.
Family respect
Some speakers use beliau for parents, grandparents, older relatives, or family mentors to make affection and deference audible. This is especially natural in a formal account, testimonial, or public speech.
Nenek saya mengajar di sekolah dasar selama hampir empat puluh tahun. Beliau masih sering bertemu dengan bekas muridnya.
My grandmother taught at an elementary school for almost forty years. She still often meets her former pupils. (respectful)
Saya belajar bersabar dari ayah saya; beliau tidak pernah mengambil keputusan saat sedang marah.
I learned patience from my father; he never makes a decision while angry. (respectful)
In intimate household conversation, family members may instead repeat Ibu/Ayah, use a name or kin term, choose dia, or omit the subject. Beliau can sound ceremonial if inserted into every casual anecdote.
Beliau is singular and human
Beliau normally refers to one human being. For several respected people, use mereka, repeat suitable titles, or use a respectful group phrase: para guru itu, Bapak dan Ibu dosen. Do not assume that reduplicating the pronoun is the ordinary plural strategy.
Kedua guru itu sudah tiba. Mereka sedang menunggu di ruang kepala sekolah.
The two teachers have arrived. They are waiting in the principal's office.
The plural mereka is not internally honorific, but the respectful noun phrase kedua guru itu and the wider discourse can maintain respect. More on plural reference appears on the mereka page.
Bound pronouns are separate choices
Respectful possession is usually expressed with full beliau: rumah beliau, pendapat beliau. Attached -nya is grammatical third-person reference but does not itself contain the honorific meaning of beliau.
EYD V writes ku-, kau-, -ku, -mu, and -nya solid with their hosts, while full beliau remains separate. Never write rumahbeliau.
Common Mistakes
1. Using beliau automatically for every older stranger
❌ Seorang pria lanjut usia diduga mengambil tas itu; beliau sedang diperiksa polisi.
Inappropriately deferential in neutral crime reporting — age alone does not require beliau.
✅ Seorang pria lanjut usia diduga mengambil tas itu; pria tersebut sedang diperiksa polisi.
An older man is suspected of taking the bag; the man is being questioned by police. (formal and neutral)
2. Using singular beliau for several people
❌ Dua direktur sudah datang; beliau menunggu di ruang rapat.
Incorrect — singular beliau cannot resume two directors.
✅ Dua direktur sudah datang; mereka menunggu di ruang rapat.
Two directors have arrived; they are waiting in the meeting room.
3. Attaching a full pronoun to a noun
❌ Pendapatbeliau sangat membantu tim kami.
Incorrect spelling — full beliau remains separate as a possessor.
✅ Pendapat beliau sangat membantu tim kami.
His or her opinion greatly helped our team. (respectful)
4. Capitalizing beliau in mid-sentence
❌ Direktur menjelaskan bahwa Beliau akan pensiun tahun depan.
Incorrect capitalization — beliau is lowercase away from sentence-initial position.
✅ Direktur menjelaskan bahwa beliau akan pensiun tahun depan.
The director explained that he or she will retire next year. (respectful)
