Viewpoint adverbials tell the listener whose judgment is being expressed or within which domain a claim holds. Menurut saya attributes a view to the speaker, bagi saya presents the speaker as the experiencer or standard of evaluation, and secara pribadi explicitly separates a personal position from another possible role. When fronted, these expressions establish responsibility for the claim that follows.
This page treats viewpoint framing in contemporary Standard Indonesian. Aspect markers and discourse particles remain on their dedicated pages.
menurut saya: attributing a claim
Menurut + source means “according to” or, with a personal source, “in someone’s opinion.” Menurut saya identifies the speaker as the source of the judgment. It can introduce an evaluation, recommendation, interpretation, or prediction.
Menurut saya rencana itu perlu dibahas lagi.
In my opinion, that plan needs to be discussed again.
Menurut dokter hasil pemeriksaan ini tidak berbahaya.
According to the doctor, these test results are not dangerous.
Jadwal baru itu terlalu padat menurut saya.
That new schedule is too crowded, in my opinion.
Fronted menurut saya scopes naturally over the whole following proposition and announces the source before the audience evaluates the claim. Final menurut saya can sound like an afterthought or a late qualification: the speaker states the judgment and then limits responsibility for it.
English according to me often sounds awkward for a personal opinion, but Indonesian menurut saya is completely ordinary and is usually translated “in my opinion.” With an external authority—menurut dokter, menurut laporan, menurut undang-undang—English “according to” is more direct.
bagi saya: relevance and personal standard
Bagi saya literally frames something “for me.” In viewpoint use, it identifies the speaker as the experiencer, affected party, or personal standard. It is especially natural with judgments whose truth depends on taste, difficulty, importance, or personal circumstances.
Bagi saya kamar itu terlalu gelap untuk bekerja.
For me, that room is too dark to work in.
Bagi Rina perjalanan dua jam tidak terlalu jauh.
For Rina, a two-hour journey isn't too far.
Kesempatan belajar lebih penting daripada gaji besar bagi saya.
The opportunity to learn is more important than a high salary for me.
Menurut saya kamar itu gelap presents “the room is dark” as the speaker’s opinion. Bagi saya kamar itu terlalu gelap untuk bekerja makes the speaker the person whose needs establish the threshold. The difference is often subtle, and both may introduce subjective judgments, but bagi highlights personal relevance or standard more strongly.
In other contexts bagi introduces a beneficiary, as in Program ini bermanfaat bagi anak-anak “This program benefits children.” The viewpoint reading arises when the bagi phrase frames how a proposition is evaluated, not merely who benefits.
secara pribadi: explicit personal accountability
Secara pribadi means “personally” and explicitly distinguishes the individual’s view from an official, professional, group, or hypothetical position. It is common in interviews, meetings, and careful argument (neutral/formal).
Secara pribadi saya mendukung usul itu, tetapi keputusan akhir ada pada dewan.
Personally, I support that proposal, but the final decision belongs to the board.
Sebagai ketua saya harus netral, tetapi secara pribadi saya memahami kekhawatiran warga.
As chair I must remain neutral, but personally I understand the residents' concerns.
Saya tidak berbicara atas nama kantor; secara pribadi saya menilai kebijakan itu kurang jelas.
I am not speaking on behalf of the office; personally, I consider that policy insufficiently clear.
The phrase does not merely intensify saya. It draws a boundary around responsibility: “this is my individual position.” That can protect an institution from being treated as the source, but it also makes the individual explicitly accountable for the judgment.
Menurut saya secara pribadi is possible when contrast demands strong emphasis, but it commonly says the same thing twice. One well-chosen frame is clearer.
Domain restriction
A viewpoint need not belong to a person. Secara hukum, secara ekonomi, secara teknis, and phrases such as dari segi keamanan restrict the claim to a body of standards. Different domain frames can support different conclusions without contradiction.
Secara hukum kontrak itu sah, tetapi dari segi keadilan isinya masih bermasalah.
Legally, the contract is valid, but from the standpoint of fairness its contents remain problematic.
Secara teknis proyek itu dapat diselesaikan tahun ini, tetapi secara ekonomi biayanya tidak masuk akal.
Technically, the project can be completed this year, but economically its cost makes no sense.
Dari segi keamanan pintu belakang harus segera diganti.
From a security standpoint, the back door must be replaced immediately.
Here the initial expression tells the reader how far the assertion extends. Kontrak itu sah sounds unrestricted; Secara hukum kontrak itu sah claims validity specifically under law. This domain-framing use of secara is developed further under formal manner with secara.
Formal and casual opinions on one issue
Consider a proposed increase in public-transport fares. A formal meeting may assign both source and reasoning explicitly:
Menurut penilaian saya kenaikan tarif belum tepat karena mutu layanan belum membaik.
In my assessment, the fare increase is not yet appropriate because service quality has not improved. (formal)
Secara pribadi saya dapat menerima kenaikan kecil, asalkan penumpang mendapat layanan yang lebih baik.
Personally, I can accept a small increase, provided passengers receive better service. (formal)
In relaxed conversation, a speaker can use the attached first-person form -ku and simpler vocabulary (informal):
Menurutku harga tiketnya jangan naik dulu kalau layanannya masih begini.
In my opinion, ticket prices shouldn't go up yet if the service is still like this. (informal)
Kalau bagiku kenaikan kecil tidak masalah asal busnya lebih sering.
For me, a small increase is fine as long as the buses run more often. (informal)
The casual versions are not grammatically careless. Menurutku and bagiku attach the pronominal suffix -ku correctly. Their shorter clauses and kalau...asal... framing match conversation. Formal writing more often spells out the source and the grounds for evaluation.
Fronting and accountability
Fronting a viewpoint before the proposition tells the audience how to interpret everything that follows. It can prevent a personal claim from being mistaken for a fact or an institutional position.
Menurut laporan audit pengeluaran itu sudah disetujui.
According to the audit report, that expenditure has been approved.
Menurut saya pengeluaran itu tetap perlu dijelaskan kepada publik.
In my opinion, that expenditure still needs to be explained to the public.
The first assigns evidential responsibility to a document. The second assigns evaluative responsibility to the speaker. Without the frame, Pengeluaran itu perlu dijelaskan is presented more directly as the writer’s unqualified claim.
Short fronted viewpoint phrases do not require a comma by default: Menurut saya rencana itu baik and Secara hukum kontrak itu sah are normal. A comma can help delimit a long frame or avoid ambiguity, but Indonesian punctuation should not be copied mechanically from an English translation.
Position also affects information flow. A final frame can mark a narrower or parenthetical qualification:
Solusi ini paling praktis bagi tim kecil.
This solution is the most practical for a small team.
Solusi ini paling praktis menurut saya.
This solution is the most practical, in my opinion.
In the first, bagi tim kecil supplies the group whose circumstances define practicality. In the second, menurut saya attributes the ranking to the speaker.
Avoiding redundant stacks
Because the expressions overlap, learners sometimes pile them together: Menurut saya secara pribadi bagi saya.... The result repeats source, personal status, and experiencer without establishing separate contrasts. Choose the frame that answers the relevant question:
- source of claim: menurut saya
- affected person or evaluative standard: bagi saya
- personal rather than official capacity: secara pribadi
- restricted field of validity: secara hukum, dari segi ekonomi
Multiple frames are justified only when they contribute genuinely different layers: Secara pribadi, dari segi biaya saya menilai rencana itu terlalu berisiko separates personal responsibility from the cost domain, though a long sentence may be clearer when rewritten as two clauses.
Common Mistakes
Stacking synonymous speaker frames
❌ Menurut saya secara pribadi bagi saya rencana itu terlalu mahal.
Incorrectly overloaded — three frames compete to mark the same speaker viewpoint.
✅ Menurut saya rencana itu terlalu mahal.
In my opinion, that plan is too expensive.
Combining menurut and bagi as one preposition
❌ Menurut bagi saya jadwalnya terlalu padat.
Incorrect — menurut and bagi introduce different viewpoint relations and cannot be fused.
✅ Bagi saya jadwalnya terlalu padat.
For me, the schedule is too crowded.
Separating an attached pronominal suffix
❌ Menurut ku harga tiketnya terlalu mahal.
Incorrect spelling — the bound suffix -ku attaches to menurut.
✅ Menurutku harga tiketnya terlalu mahal.
In my opinion, the ticket price is too high. (informal)
Treating a personal view as a legal domain
❌ Secara hukum saya kurang suka aturan itu.
Incorrect frame for the intended personal preference — liking is not a legal-domain judgment.
✅ Secara pribadi saya kurang suka aturan itu.
Personally, I don't really like that rule.
