Extraction is the dependency between an expression placed at a clause edge and an understood grammatical role inside the clause. Questions, relative clauses, and topicalization can all create such dependencies. Indonesian does not solve them by English-style movement alone: voice choice, preposition preservation, relational nouns, and resumptive expressions determine which dependency is acceptable.
The decisive question is not simply “what moved?” but “what role remains interpretable inside the clause?” A clean gap is normal for an accessible subject or patient. A possessor or oblique often needs -nya or restructuring. A difficult embedded dependency may be repaired by passive voice or replaced with a topic-comment construction.
What a gap represents
In a relative clause, the head noun stands outside the clause while one role inside it remains unspoken.
Pegawai yang datang paling awal membuka ruang rapat.
The employee who arrived earliest opened the meeting room.
The head pegawai corresponds to the missing subject of datang. No pronoun appears after yang.
Dokumen yang saya periksa tadi pagi masih belum lengkap.
The document I checked this morning is still incomplete.
Here dokumen corresponds to the missing patient of saya periksa. First-person object voice makes that patient structurally accessible.
Kota tempat mereka pertama kali bertemu sudah banyak berubah.
The city where they first met has changed greatly.
The relational noun tempat repairs a locative dependency that Standard Indonesian does not normally express through an English-style stranded preposition.
Subject extraction
Subjects are the most accessible gap position. In questions, siapa may remain in ordinary position or combine with yang in a cleft-like subject question.
Siapa yang mengetuk pintu ruang arsip tadi?
Who knocked on the archive-room door earlier?
Tamu mana yang belum menerima kartu akses?
Which guest has not received an access card?
The researcher who led the survey is from Palu.
The bus that stops in front of the market every half hour goes to the old terminal.
The head or question phrase supplies the actor/subject role. Actor-voice meN- remains when that missing role is actor: yang memimpin, not a mechanically stripped form.
With a passive predicate, the extracted subject can instead be a patient:
Berkas yang ditemukan petugas kebersihan itu milik bagian keuangan.
The file found by the cleaning staff belongs to the finance department.
The head berkas is the understood patient subject of ditemukan.
Object extraction requires voice repair
An actor-voice clause privileges its actor. To make the patient the relative head or fronted pivot, Indonesian normally changes the internal voice.
Rina read that long article on the way home.
The long article Rina read on the way home discusses climate change.
With a first- or second-person actor, object voice is natural:
Artikel yang kamu rekomendasikan sudah saya simpan.
I have saved the article you recommended.
Which book must we bring to the discussion room?
We checked that report before the meeting began.
The last is topicalization/object voice rather than a relative. The patient comes first, followed by aspect, pronominal actor, and the bare derived stem.
Voice repair is more central than movement in the English sense. An actor-voice relative that leaves its object unexpressed after yang is not the neutral Standard Indonesian solution.
The proposal drafted by the legal team will be discussed on Friday.
The proposal we drafted will be discussed on Friday.
Third-person lexical actor favors di- passive; pronominal actor favors object voice.
Prepositional extraction preserves or restructures the relation
Standard Indonesian does not generally strand a preposition at the end of an ordinary relative. Questions can front the whole prepositional phrase:
Dengan siapa Anda membahas perubahan jadwal itu?
With whom did you discuss the schedule change? (formal/careful)
Kepada siapa salinan keputusan tersebut dikirimkan?
To whom was a copy of that decision sent? (formal)
Dari kota mana para peserta itu berangkat?
Which city did those participants depart from?
In relatives, Indonesian often chooses a verb that makes the participant a direct object, or introduces a relational noun such as tempat, alasan, or cara.
Orang yang saya ajak bicara tadi ternyata kepala cabang.
The person I spoke with earlier turned out to be the branch head.
Gedung tempat kami mengadakan pelatihan sedang direnovasi.
The building where we held the training is being renovated.
The reason the meeting was postponed has not been explained to the participants.
Cara mereka menyelesaikan sengketa itu patut dipelajari.
The way they resolved that dispute deserves study.
These repairs spell out the relation instead of relying on a stranded dengan, di, or karena.
Resumptive pronouns: where they belong
A resumptive expression overtly represents the edge topic or relative head inside the following clause. Indonesian uses resumption naturally for possessive relations and detached topics.
Saya bertemu peneliti yang artikelnya baru diterbitkan.
I met the researcher whose article has just been published.
Attached -nya resumes peneliti as possessor of artikel. This is not the same role as an ordinary subject or object gap.
That old office laptop—its battery no longer lasts a full hour.
That cost issue—we will discuss it after lunch.
The commas mark detached topics. Resumptive baterainya and membahasnya make the topic's internal relation explicit.
An ordinary restrictive object relative normally rejects that duplication:
Film yang kami tonton semalam ternyata diangkat dari kisah nyata.
The film we watched last night turned out to be based on a true story.
The head film already supplies the missing object. Adding -nya to tonton would fill the same role twice.
Embedded extraction
A gap can occur inside a selected complement when voice and processing remain favorable.
Who do you think will chair the next meeting?
The questioned person is the understood subject of akan memimpin, inside the complement of kira.
The book I thought Rina had read turned out to be still sealed.
The head buku is the patient subject of embedded sudah dibaca Rani. Passive voice avoids an inaccessible actor-voice object gap.
Which data are you sure have been examined by an independent auditor?
The candidate we hope can lead the team will be interviewed tomorrow.
These dependencies cross a complement boundary, but they do not license unlimited depth. The long-distance guide treats variation and processing limits in detail.
Island-like restrictions and repairs
Extraction becomes sharply degraded when the gap lies inside a relative clause, a complex noun phrase, an adjunct, or only one branch of a coordination. Indonesian shares these island-like effects with many languages, though speaker judgments vary.
Instead of forcing a gap out of a relative clause, split the information:
Saya bertemu penulis artikel itu kemarin. Artikelnya sedang diperdebatkan banyak orang.
I met the author of that article yesterday. The article is being debated by many people.
As for that report, the director spoke with the team that drafted it.
The second uses an external topic plus a resumptive -nya inside the relative clause. It does not pretend that the topic was extracted by an ordinary relative dependency.
For an adjunct-contained role, state the whole relation:
Kami menunda rapat karena dokumen itu belum ditandatangani.
We postponed the meeting because that document had not been signed.
Dokumen itu belum ditandatangani, sehingga rapat kami tunda.
That document had not been signed, so we postponed the meeting.
The repair creates two clear propositions rather than a difficult extraction out of a reason clause.
Questions, relatives, and topics are not identical
All three can place material early, but their internal syntax differs.
| Construction | Edge expression | Typical internal strategy |
|---|---|---|
| question | siapa, apa, mana | gap, in-situ phrase, or fronted PP |
| relative | head noun + yang | subject/patient gap licensed by voice |
| detached topic | referential NP + comma | gap or resumptive expression |
Which report did you discuss in the meeting earlier? (question phrase in situ)
Which report did you discuss in the meeting earlier? (fronted patient question)
That report—when will you discuss it with the director?
The last is a topic plus a separate question, not a single wh-extraction of laporan itu.
Common Mistakes
Repeating an ordinary subject inside a relative
❌ Pegawai yang dia datang paling awal membuka ruang rapat.
Incorrect—the head pegawai already supplies the subject gap.
✅ Pegawai yang datang paling awal membuka ruang rapat utama.
The employee who arrived earliest opened the main meeting room.
Leaving an English-style resumptive object
Incorrect—the head film and object -nya duplicate the same role.
The film we watched last night was adapted from an old novel.
Keeping actor voice with an object gap
Incorrect neutral relative—actor voice cannot leave this patient gap directly.
The proposal drafted by the legal team will be discussed tomorrow morning.
Stranding a preposition as in English
Incorrect Standard Indonesian—the preposition cannot be stranded in this ordinary relative.
The person I spoke with earlier is the new branch head.
Treating a detached resumptive topic as a simple relative gap
Incorrect analysis—baterainya is the clause-internal subject; laptop itu is a detached topic.
✅ Laptop itu, baterainya perlu diganti sebelum perjalanan.
That laptop—its battery needs replacing before the trip.
Key Takeaways
- Subject and patient extraction normally leaves a gap; voice makes the missing role accessible.
- Object relatives repair actor-voice structure through di- passive or pronominal object voice.
- Prepositional roles preserve the preposition in questions or use relational nouns and lexical restructuring in relatives.
- Resumptives are natural for possession and detached topics, not inside ordinary subject or object relatives.
- Island-like environments and deep embedding favor splitting, resumption, or voice repair over English-style movement.
