Why is the verb hicieron spelled with an 'i' if the infinitive is hacer?
The verb hacer (to do / to make) has a highly irregular preterite past tense. Instead of keeping its normal stem, it changes to an 'i' stem (hic-) for most of its forms. To say "you all did," we use that new stem and add the plural ending to get hicieron.
Why does the subject ustedes come after the verb hicieron?
In Spanish questions, it is standard to switch the word order so the subject (ustedes) follows the verb (hicieron). Keeping the verb right next to the question word (qué) sounds the most natural to native speakers.
