Where does the word preso come from?
Preso is the irregular past participle of the verb prendere (to take). To talk about the past, we combine the helper verb avere (lui ha = he has) with preso to say he took or he has taken.
Why does the sentence use sul programma instead of just su programma?
In Italian, when the preposition su (on or about) is followed by a definite article like il (the), they must combine into a single word. Since programma is masculine and uses il, su + il becomes sul. Also, watch out: even though programma ends in -a, it is a masculine word!
