Why is the past tense of 'to write' scritto instead of something ending in '-uto' or '-ito'?
Scritto is the irregular past participle of the verb scrivere (to write). Many high-frequency Italian verbs have irregular past participles that don't follow the normal -ato, -uto, or -ito rules, so they just need to be memorized!
Where exactly does non go when using a two-part past tense?
The negative word non must always go directly before the helper verb, which in this case is ho. You cannot put non between the helper verb and the past participle, so saying ho non scritto is incorrect.
Why is it l'articolo with an apostrophe instead of il articolo?
Articolo is a masculine noun starting with a vowel. Before a vowel, the singular definite article (lo for masculine, la for feminine) drops its own vowel and attaches to the noun with an apostrophe. This makes the words flow together smoothly when spoken.
Why are per and la separate words here? Don't prepositions usually merge with the article?
While prepositions like a, di, and in merge with articles to make combined words (like alla or della), the preposition per (for) does not. It stays as a separate word right next to the article.
