Questions & Answers about Ik wil je niet afkraken of kwetsen, maar dit verslag is tactloos.
This lesson focuses on using 'niet dat' to prevent misunderstandings. Why isn't it used here, and how would the sentence change if we did use it?
This sentence achieves the exact same pre-emptive goal (softening a harsh critique) by just using a standard main clause: Ik wil je niet.... However, you could easily rewrite it using the lesson's target structure: Niet dat ik je wil afkraken of kwetsen, maar dit verslag is tactloos. Notice that because Niet dat introduces a subordinate clause, the modal verb wil moves to the end to join the other infinitives.
Is 'afkraken' a separable verb? Why isn't it split up in this sentence?
Yes, afkraken (af + kraken) is a separable verb meaning to harshly criticize or tear down. It isn't split here because the modal verb wil (want to) pushes the other verbs to the end of the clause as full infinitives. If you used it as the main verb without wil, it would separate: Ik kraak je niet af (I am not tearing you down).
Why does the pronoun 'je' come before 'niet' instead of after it?
In Dutch, definite objects like the direct object pronoun je (you) almost always come before niet. If you put niet before je, it would artificially stress the pronoun, making it sound like a contrast: I don't want to hurt YOU (but I do want to hurt someone else). Placing je first naturally negates the verbs afkraken of kwetsen instead.
Why doesn't the word order invert after 'maar' in the second half of the sentence?
