Heading Off Assumptions with "Niet dat"
When giving constructive feedback, it often helps to clarify your intentions before delivering the critique. In Dutch, you can smoothly head off a false assumption by using the phrase niet dat (not that).
Grammatically, niet dat introduces a subordinate clause. This means the word order changes: the conjugated verb is pushed to the very end of the clause.
| Not that I am ungrateful, but I have some comments. | Niet dat ik ondankbaar ben, maar ik heb wat commentaar. |
Following Up with "maar"
A niet dat clause rarely stands alone. It is almost always the first half of a sentence, immediately followed by a main clause starting with maar (but) to deliver the actual point or feedback.
In the subordinate clause, all verbs cluster at the end. If you have multiple verbs, like a modal and an infinitive (wil kwetsen), they sit together. If you use a separable verb like tekortschieten (to fall short), it is written as one word at the end.
| Not that I want to hurt you, but this is incorrect. | Niet dat ik je wil kwetsen, maar dit klopt niet. |
| Not that your argument falls short, but some nuance is missing. | Niet dat jouw argument tekortschiet, maar er ontbreekt wat nuance. |
| Not that your suggestion falls short, but we don't want to tear down anyone's work. | Niet dat jouw suggestie tekortschiet, maar we willen niemands werk afkraken. |
Navigating Tone and Intent
Critique can easily be misunderstood. To keep things professional and kind, it is useful to describe how comments might be interpreted using the separable verb opvatten (to take / to interpret).
You can explicitly state that you don't want to afkraken (tear down) someone's work, or acknowledge that feedback might accidentally sound betweterig (pedantic) or tactloos (tactless).
| I don't want to tear you down or hurt you, but this report is tactless. | Ik wil je niet afkraken of kwetsen, maar dit verslag is tactloos. |
| My suggestion can be taken as pedantic. | Mijn suggestie kan als betweterig worden opgevat. |
| Please do not take this criticism the wrong way. | Vat deze kritiek alstublieft niet verkeerd op. |
