Questions & Answers about Wij hebben het plakband nodig voor een doos of vijf.
Why does een doos of vijf mean "about five boxes" instead of "a box or five"?
In Dutch, you can estimate quantities by using the fixed structure een + [noun] + of + [number]. While it literally looks like "a box or five", native speakers use this exclusively to mean "around five boxes".
Why is doos singular here if we are talking about five of them?
That is a strict rule of this specific estimating structure. Because the phrase starts with the singular article een (a/an), the noun immediately following it must also be singular. You must say een doos of vijf, never een dozen of vijf.
Could I use the phrase een stuk of to estimate the boxes here?
Yes, absolutely! You could say voor een stuk of vijf dozen. Notice the difference in grammar, though: when you use een stuk of, the noun comes at the end and must be plural (dozen). Both structures are perfectly natural and mean the same thing.
Why is nodig placed before the voor phrase, rather than at the very end of the sentence?
