Dormir means to sleep, one of the first verbs a learner needs and one that most textbooks present as "regular." It isn't quite. Dormir belongs to a small but important group of -ir verbs that change the stem vowel o → u in the stressed forms of the present indicative and throughout the present subjunctive. This is exactly the pattern of tossir, cobrir, descobrir, engolir, and subir (which raises u → o, the mirror image). Once you know the pattern, you know five or six verbs at once.
Outside the present system, dormir is straightforward: its preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, and participles all follow the regular -ir template. The 1sg changes o → u. Forms where stress falls on the stem keep that change; forms stressed on the ending keep o.

Note the distinction: durmo (1sg) has u because the stress is on the stem and the morphological rule for this verb class raises the vowel in the 1sg only. The 2sg, 3sg, and 3pl forms dormes, dorme, dormem are also stem-stressed, but here the stem vowel stays o — it is pronounced as an open /ɔ/ and written with o. The only form that visibly raises to u in the present indicative is durmo. This mirrors tossir → tusso, tosses, tosse, tossem and cobrir → cubro, cobres, cobre, cobrem.

The two most frequent collocations. Portuguese often answers Como dormiste? with bem or mal directly.

Adormecer — to fall asleep
A related verb, adormecer, means the moment of going from awake to asleep. It is not interchangeable with dormir.
Adormeci no sofá a ver televisão.
I fell asleep on the couch watching TV.

The baby takes a while to fall asleep.
Dormir a sesta / tirar uma soneca — to take a nap
Dormir a sesta is the classic European Portuguese expression for an afternoon nap. Tirar uma soneca is more colloquial and can refer to a shorter doze off.

In summer, many Portuguese still take a siesta after lunch.

Dormitar — to doze
A less common verb meaning to doze lightly, often used for brief dozing in chairs, on transport, or during boring situations.
