Why do we use nel instead of just saying in il mondo?
In Italian, you never write in and il as separate words next to each other. When the preposition in (in) is followed by the masculine singular article il (the), they glue together to form the articulated preposition nel. Because mondo is a masculine noun starting with a consonant, it requires the article il, giving us nel mondo.
How do we know to use famosa instead of famoso?
Adjectives in Italian have to match the gender of the noun they describe. Because città (city) is a feminine noun, the adjective changes its ending to the feminine -a, becoming famosa. You can also tell città is feminine in this sentence because it is paired with the feminine indefinite article una.
Why does the adjective famosa come after città instead of before it?
In English, we put the adjective first, like in a famous city. But in Italian, descriptive adjectives usually come right after the noun they are describing. So the sentence literally flows as Rome is a city famous in the world.
Why does città have an accent mark on the last letter?
