It emphasizes the exclusive or hypothetical nature of the person or thing being described.
Why is there an ای added to بچه to make بچهای? Doesn't that just mean a child?
While the ی suffix often means a or an, here it is the relative ی. We attach it to a noun right before a که clause to single out that specific noun. So بچهای که means the child who. Because بچه ends in a silent he, we add an alef before the ی for pronunciation, creating ای.
Why do we say او خودش? Isn't just او enough for he?
Just او is grammatically enough for he, but adding خودش (himself) makes it emphatic. Just like in English, it adds strong emphasis to the specific person being discussed.
