Questions & Answers about مهم است که کلید را گم نکنی.
Why is the negative part attached to koni instead of gom?
گم کردن (to lose) is a compound verb made of گم (lost) and the helping verb کردن (to do). In Farsi, prefixes for the negative or subjunctive always attach to the helping verb, never the first word. So the negative prefix na- goes on the present stem of کردن, making نکنی (nakoni).
Why do we use the subjunctive form here at all?
The phrase مهم است که (it is important that) expresses a necessity or recommendation. Whenever you use phrases showing necessity, desire, or doubt followed by که (that), the verb that follows must be in the subjunctive mood.
The subjunctive normally uses the prefix be-. Why doesn't نکنی (nakoni) have it?
When you make a subjunctive verb negative, the negative prefix na- completely replaces the subjunctive prefix be-. You never use both at the same time, so it becomes nakoni instead of nabekoni.
Why is را (ra) placed right after کلید (kelid)?
را (ra) marks a specific direct object. Because the sentence says "do not lose the key" (a specific key that we both know about) and not just "do not lose a key", you must use را right after کلید.
Where is the word for "you" in this sentence?
Farsi usually drops subject pronouns like تو (you, singular) because the verb ending already shows who the subject is. The -i ending on نکنی (nakoni) tells us clearly that it means "that you do not lose".
