The Negative Present Subjunctive
In the previous lesson, you learned how to form the present subjunctive by adding the prefix بـ to the present stem. To make the subjunctive negative (for example, to say "that I do not go" or "so that I do not fall"), you simply replace the positive بـ with the negative prefix نـ.
Forming the Negative Subjunctive
The structure is: نـ + present stem + present endings.
Here is how you conjugate the verbal part of many compound verbs, کردن (to do / to make), which has the present stem کن:
| Person | Prefix + Stem + Ending | Negative Subjunctive | Literal Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | نـ + کن + م | نکنم | that I do not do |
| You (informal) | نـ + کن + ی | نکنی | that you do not do |
| He/She/It | نـ + کن + د | نکند | that he/she/it does not do |
| We | نـ + کن + یم | نکنیم | that we do not do |
| You (formal/plural) | نـ + کن + ید | نکنید | that you do not do |
| They | نـ + کن + ند | نکنند | that they do not do |
Hopes, Promises, and Decisions
Just like the positive subjunctive, the negative form is used after verbs expressing hopes, promises, attempts, or decisions. Remember that for compound verbs, the negative prefix attaches only to the verbal part at the end of the phrase.
| I promise not to make a mistake again. | قول میدهم دوباره اشتباه نکنم.qowl midaham dobâre eshtebâh nakonam. |
| I hope I do not catch a cold tomorrow. | امیدوارم فردا سرما نخورم.omidvâram fardâ sarmâ nakhoram. |
| He decides not to talk to the manager. | او تصمیم میگیرد با مدیر صحبت نکند.u tasmim migirad bâ modir sohbat nakonad. |
Vowel Stems
If the present stem of a verb starts with a vowel, such as افتادن (to fall, present stem: افت), combining it with the negative نـ creates a "y" sound transition, resulting in نیـ (e.g., نیفتد).
| The child tries not to fall. | بچه سعی میکند نیفتد.bacheh sa'y mikonad nayoftad. |
Purpose and Impersonal Expressions
We frequently use the negative subjunctive to explain the purpose of an action—saying "so that" (تا) something does not happen. Notice how the following sentence beautifully pairs a positive subjunctive (بپوشی) with a negative one (نخوری).
| You must wear warm clothes so that you do not catch a cold. | باید لباس گرم بپوشی تا سرما نخوری.bâyad lebâs garm bepushi tâ sarmâ nakhori. |
It is also required after impersonal phrases like "it is better that" (بهتر است).
| It is better that you do not get angry. | بهتر است عصبانی نشوی.behtar ast asabâni nashavi. |
